Two entomophthoraceous species,Zoophthora radicans andEntomophthora planchoniana, were found on the yellow pecan aphid,Monellia costalis, shortly after it was introduced into Israel. This aphid is a new host forZ. radicans anywhere. The fungus was isolated in pure culture and artificially inoculated on three Dipteran species:Musca domestica, Drosophila melanogaster andCeratitis capitata, as well as on the HemipteranEmpoasca sp. from pecan. The identity ofZ. radicans and some new characters,e.g. the production of two kinds of rhizoids, are discussed. The possibility of usingM. domestica as a vector for artificial spread of the fungus, as a means of biological control of various insect pests, is advocated.  相似文献

Quantitative analysis of culture using millions of digitized books   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We constructed a corpus of digitized texts containing about 4% of all books ever printed. Analysis of this corpus enables us to investigate cultural trends quantitatively. We survey the vast terrain of 'culturomics,' focusing on linguistic and cultural phenomena that were reflected in the English language between 1800 and 2000. We show how this approach can provide insights about fields as diverse as lexicography, the evolution of grammar, collective memory, the adoption of technology, the pursuit of fame, censorship, and historical epidemiology. Culturomics extends the boundaries of rigorous quantitative inquiry to a wide array of new phenomena spanning the social sciences and the humanities.  相似文献

The dynamics of inorganic N in soil following the application of plant residues depends on their composition. We assumed that all plant materials are composed of similar components, each decomposing at a specific rate, but differ in the proportions of the various components. The NCSOIL model that simulates C and N turnover in soil was used to link the rates of residue decomposition to their composition, defined as soluble, cellulose-like and lignin-like C and N, and thereby integrate short and long-term effects of residues on available N dynamics in soil. Five plant residues in a wide range of C:N ratios were incubated in soil for 24 weeks at 30 °C, during which C and N mineralization were measured. The materials with large C:N ratios (corn, rice hulls and wheat straw) were also incubated with NH4+-N to avoid N deficiency. The residues were analyzed for total and soluble C and N. The partitioning of insoluble C and N between cellulose- and lignin-like pools was optimized by best fit of simulated C and N mineralization to measured results. The decomposition rate constants of the soluble and lignin-like pools were assumed to be 1.0 and 10−5 d−1, respectively, and that of the cellulose-like pool, obtained by model optimization against mineralization of cellulose with NH4+-N in soil, was 0.051 d−1. The optimized, kinetically defined lignin-like pool of all residues was considerably larger than lignin contents normally found in plant residues by the Van Soest procedure. Gross N mineralization of tobacco and rape residues was similar, but N recovery from tobacco was larger, because a larger fraction of its C was in the lignin-like pool. N in rice hulls, corn and wheat residues was mostly recalcitrant, yet rice hulls did not cause N deficiency, because most of its C was recalcitrant too. The soluble components of the residues had strong short-term effects on available N in soil, but the cellulose-like pool was equally important for short and medium-term effects. Soluble and cellulose-like C were 29 and 42% of total C, respectively, in corn and 7 and 50% in wheat. Maximal net inorganic N losses, measured in both residue treatments after 2 weeks, were 42 mg g−1 C applied as corn and 31 mg g−1 C applied as wheat, or 84 and 110 mg g−1 decomposed C of corn and wheat, respectively. Rice hulls immobilized N slowly, but by the end of 24 weeks all three residues immobilized 26-27 mg N kg−1 C applied. The different dynamics of N immobilization demonstrated the need to determine the decomposability of C and N rather than their total contents in plant residues.  相似文献

? The concept of composting has always been rooted in a soil conservation philosophy that recognizes the role of organic matter in agriculture. The paradox has been that the recent rise in composting interest has come from the need for waste management solutions which emphasize economical and environmental alternatives, not the need for soil improvement and nutrient recycling. This review traces some early researches on the link between compost application and crop productivity and urges greater support for research that shows how compost can reduce pesticide use, improve farm economics and, in general, support the goals of sustainable agriculture.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To develop and evaluate a questionnaire (functional evaluation of cardiac health [FETCH] questionnaire) for assessing health-related quality of life in dogs with cardiac disease. DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: 360 dogs with cardiac disease PROCEDURE: The questionnaire was developed on the basis of widely accepted clinical signs of cardiac disease in dogs. A FETCH score was calculated by summing responses to questionnaire items; possible scores ranged from 0 to 85. For questionnaire validation, owners of 60 dogs were asked to complete the questionnaire and provide an overall assessment of their dogs' quality of life (16 owners completed the questionnaire twice). Disease severity was assessed with the International Small Animal Cardiac Health Council (ISACHC) classification for cardiac disease. Following validation, the final questionnaire was administered to owners of the remaining 300 dogs. RESULTS: Internal consistency of the questionnaire was good, and the FETCH score was significantly correlated with the owner-reported quality-of-life score and with ISACHC classification. For owners that completed the questionnaire twice, scores were significantly correlated. During the second phase of the study, the FETCH score ranged from 0 to 70 (median, 7) and was significantly correlated with ISACHC classification, but did not vary significantly with underlying disease. For dogs examined twice, the change in FETCH score was significantly greater for dogs in which ISACHC classification improved than for dogs in which ISACHC classification was unchanged. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that the FETCH questionnaire is a valid and reliable method for assessing health-related quality of life in dogs with cardiac disease.  相似文献

A field experiment was designed to provide data on the effect of soil heterogeneity on the distribution of herbicides following leaching by irrigation and rain water. Terbuthylazine and bromacil, two nonconservative herbicides, together with CaBr2, a conservative chemical, were used in the reported experiment. The experimental field consisted of a noncultivated 175-m2 plot in which 20 observation points were randomly selected. A hundred and ten centimeters of irrigation and rainwater were applied and the field was periodically sampled for chemical distributions. The spatial variability of the field was determined by measuring the Ks (saturated conductivity) and α (Gardner parameter). Auxiliary laboratory experiments were performed to define the adsorption-desorption of the chemicals studied in these field soils. Results on the adsorption-desorption of terbuthylazine and bromacil and on the redistribution of these chemicals in the field to a depth of 120 cm during leaching are shown. Bromacil leached to a greater extent than terbuthylazine. The differences among the concentrations of herbicides in the various cores studied may be explained in terms of properties of the chemicals and soil spatial variability. The residual concentrations of terbuthylazine and bromacil were also determined to a depth of 400 cm after the leaching of 110 cm of water. In some of the cores, two zones showing a relatively high concentration of terbuthylazine and bromacil were observed at depths of 40–60 and 200–300 cm, respectively. This redistribution pattern of the herbicides could be explained by the preferential flow of the solute in the cores studied.  相似文献

Of the 13 genes described as affecting fruit color in Cucurbita pepo, one, D (Dark stem), also markedly affects stem color. The D allele confers dark stems and dark intermediate-age fruits, is dominant to the d allele for light stems and fruits, and epistatic to two recessive genes conferring light fruit coloration, l-1 and l-2. However, a gene for light fruit coloration, W (Weak fruit color), is epistatic to D in the fruits. We observed variation for stem color in a scallop squash cultivar having light-colored fruits, some plants having dark stems and others light stems. Two true-breeding inbreds of this cultivar, one having dark stems and the other light stems, were developed and, when these inbreds were crossed, the progeny had light stems. In order to elucidate the genetic basis of the dominant light-stem characteristic, these two inbreds were crossed with two near-isogenic tester lines, one of genotype D/D l-1/l-1 l-2/l-2 and the other of genotype d/d l-1/l-1 l-2/l-2. Also, the dominant light stem and light fruit color were introgressed into a third near-isogenic line of genotype D/D l-1/l-1 l-2/l-2, resulting in two new near-isogenic lines, and these lines were then intercrossed. The results showed that the variation in stem color of the scallop squash cultivar derives from segregation of alleles at the W locus, with a newly designated top-dominant allele, W S , conferring both, light stems and light fruits. Cucurbita pepo (pumpkin, squash,gourd) is an economically important species that is susceptible to the cucurbit powdery mildew fungus, Podosphaera xanthii(syn. Sphaerotheca fuliginea). ‘True French’, an open-pollinated cultivar of the Zucchini Group of C. pepo, was crossed with an unnamed powdery-mildew resistant straight neck-type accession, the resistance of which was apparently derived from an interspecific cross with a resistant wild species of Cucurbita,and resistant plants were selected in the F2 generation. This was followed by six cycles of backcross-pedigree selection for resistance, and resulted in the development of an accession true-breeding for resistance to powdery mildew and nearly isogenic to ‘True French’. The resistant and susceptible near-isogenics were crossed and seeds of the filial and backcross generations were produced. Plants of the parental accessions and their progenies were grown together in a controlled-environment chamber, exposed to the pathogenic fungus, and scored as resistant, partially resistant, or susceptible 27–33 days after sowing. The results indicated that resistance is conferred by a single incompletely dominant gene, designated Pm-0. Adult Mediterranean fruit flies (Ceratitis capitata), collected in the field, were infected with entomophthoralean fungi. The fungi sporulated poorly on the cadavers, and resting spores, rhizoids and cystidia were not observed. Measurements of conidia and nuclei and counts of nuclei per conidium from different specimens suggest that the causative agents wereEntomophthora muscae sensu stricto andEntomophthora schizophorae, species recently separated from theEntomophthora muscae species complex. The construction of vehicular roads likely affects the distribution of natural resources. Although the effects of roads on different ecosystem aspects have been extensively studied, studies in arid and, particularly, in hyper-arid ecosystems are scarce. In drylands, where water is the main limiting factor, the effect of roads on the redistribution of water may have strong subsequent effects on the ecosystem, especially when roads cross natural water flow paths. To fill this knowledge gap, we studied the effects of a road that runs across a slope on the distribution of plants and animals in a hyper-arid environment. Changes in shrub cover, below and above the road, were quantified by remote sensing and image classification, while plant-associated arthropods were vacuum-sampled from shrub canopies and from open (inter-shrub) areas. We found that the spatial distribution of shrubs, a vital resource facilitating many other organisms, was affected by the road, with an increase in the shrub cover immediately above the road and a decrease below it. Arthropod abundance generally followed shrub cover, but the exact pattern depended on the specific group sampled. While some arthropod groups (e.g., aphids, parasitic wasps and barklice) thrived under the disturbed conditions above the road, other arthropod groups (e.g., mites and true bugs) were less abundant in the disturbed patches. Our results highlight the strong effects of human-made structures on the distribution of flora and fauna in arid ecosystems.  相似文献
