Histofarcin, a skin test antigen for the diagnosis of epizootic lymphangitis, was locally produced from the mycelial form of Histoplasma capsulatum var. farciminosum (HCF) in disease-endemic districts of Ethiopia and tested for its application in the field between April 2002 and May 2003. The test was evaluated using 108 mules, 84 in endemic and 24 in disease-free districts. Microscopic and mycological examinations of clinical lesions were used as the "gold standard" for the validation of the test. The concentration of histofarcin that caused an optimum reaction was 0.2-0.4 mg/mL in a 0.1 mL dose and this was attained 24-48 h post-injection. The sensitivity and specificity of the histofarcin test were 90.3% (CI = 73.1, 97.5) and 69% (95%, CI = 48.1, 84.9%) in disease-endemic districts. On the other hand, specificity was 100% (CI=94.8, 100) in disease-free districts. Positive and negative predictive values of the histofarcin test were 77.78% (95% CI = 60.4, 89.3) and 85.71% (95% CI = 62.6, 96.2), respectively. A marginal substantial agreement (kappa = 0.61, P = 0.0000) was observed between the clinical status and the result of the histofarcin test. A large proportion (31%) of 'false positives' was recorded in endemic districts, which could be due to the pre-clinical stage of the disease. The latter ended in lower specificity and positive predictive value of the test since the true infection status of a 'false positive' could not be known on the basis of clinical features. Therefore, standard test validation procedures including slaughtering and isolation of HCF is required. After proper validation, we conclude that the histofarcin test could play a significant role in detecting early infection, and differentiating of EL from glanders, ulcerative lymphangitis, and sporotrichosis.  相似文献

There are only a few studies of land cover-land use changes which provide an integrated assessment of the biophysical and societal causes and consequences of environmental degradation in Ethiopia. Our objectives were to determine the status of the environmental degradation, analyse and evaluate the relationships among vegetation, geomorphological and socio-economic factors contributing to environmental degradation, and propose opportunities for rehabilitation of these natural resources. Field and other environmental data in northern Ethiopia and those acquired by remote sensing techniques were used to accomplish these objectives. These were integrated with socio-economic data obtained from official sources using a Geographic Information System (GIS).Spatial information such as the percent of land cover-land use types and geomorphological categories, and the percent of each land cover-land use type in the geomorphological categories were calculated using Geographic Information System (GIS). The three most dominant features of the geomorphological categories (93.0%) are scarps and denuded rock slopes, erosion surfaces and badlands, while the three most dominant features in the land cover-land use types (71.3%) are croplands, open woodlands and bushlands. Badlands account for 38.7% of the geomorphological units and 41.8% of the croplands currently occur on badlands. Simple and partial correlation analyses were applied to explore the extent of the interaction between the anthropogenic and the natural system. The anthropogenic system is influenced by elevation, which is positively correlated with human population and livestock densities and area of croplands. The natural system finds its place only on steep slopes as shown by the positive correlation between woodland, slope, high potential erosion, scarps and denudational rock slopes. The study indicates that agriculture in the study area is in a critical environmental situation. A change of paradigm in land-use and development is needed to encourage participation of the landowners and users in the efforts to conserve the vegetation and the soil. This study provides sound options that could be used to rehabilitate the vegetation directly and to alleviate the current pressure on the land and improve human welfare indirectly. Matching the human and livestock densities with the carrying capacity of the land through recruitment of the surplus labour force for a modern economy, resettlement,off-farm employment and intensification of agriculture are t he long and short-term actions that may contribute to the rehabilitation of the degraded areas. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

To investigate the woody species composition, diversity and structure of Kuandisha Afromontane forest, vegetation and environmental data were collected from 53 plots of 10 m 9 50 m for trees and shrubs and 265 subplots of 2 m 9 4 m for seedlings were laid along eight transect lines. The local name, scientific name, abundance,DBH, height and percentage foliage cover of species were recorded. Environmental variables, namely altitude, latitude and longitude as well as disturbance levels were also recorded in each plot. Structure, basal area, importance value index(IVI) and species prioritization were analyzed using spreadsheet programs. Correlation coefficients, frequency, relative frequency, Shannon diversity index,Shannon evenness and vegetation classification were analyzed using an R package. Sixty-six species belonging to40 families were recorded. Fabaceae was the most diverse family consisting of seven species, followed by Euphorbiaceae and Asteraceae. In terms of habit, 29 species were trees, 28 were shrubs, and 9 were lianas. The overall Shannon diversity index was 2.5. The frequency and relative frequency of woody species with DBH C2.5 cm ranged from 1.9 to 92.5 and 0.1 to 5, respectively. Seedling density varied among species ranging from five to 9938 individuals ha-1. The total basal area of woody species having DBH C2.5 cm is 15.3 m2ha-1. The IVI of species ranged from 0.13 for Solanum giganteum Jacq. to 28.4 for Croton macrostachyus Del. The woody vegetation was classified into five community types. Species richness, diversity and evenness of communities were strongly positively correlated. On the other hand, the correlation between disturbance and seedling density, and species richness was strongly negative. Thus, among the recorded woody species, a significant portion was either lacking regeneration or selectively removed for various purposes. The lack of seedlings of those species is mainly attributed to anthropogenic disturbances particularly free grazing. As a result, 14 tree, seven shrub and one liana species were prioritized for conservation and management interventions.  相似文献

Plant species distributions show patterns along elevation gradients. Regardless of the diverse Afromontane vegetation in Ethiopia(AFE), studies of elevation patterns of woody plants are limited and they are restricted to small areas or single/few Mountains. Moreover, there is no general consensus on the patterns of woody taxa distribution by elevation. The objectives of this study were to examine the elevation patterns of woody taxa richness and their relationship with elevation in the AFE. Data were collected and compiled from the Flora of Ethiopia and Eritrea(Vols. 1–7). About 5918 plant species of 243 families were examined and their elevational distributions were recorded. The distributional ranges of woody taxa were aggregated at 19 points(sites) at 100 m intervals starting from 1500 to 3400 m a.s.l. Single-factor analysis of variance(one-way ANOVA) was used to test the hypothesis that mean species richness of woody taxa decreases from the lower to the upper limit of AFE. Simple linear correlation and regression were used to show the relationships of woody taxa richness with elevation. We documented the presence of 505 woody taxa(441 species,31 subspecies and 33 varieties) representing 267 genera and 90 families in the AFE. In terms of habit, 279 taxa are shrubs, 178 are trees and 48 are lianas. The distribution of woody taxa(trees, shrubs and lianas) showed a slight increase at the lower portion and a monotonic decline with increasing elevation. Species richness of trees, shrubs and lianas was negatively and significantly correlated with elevation(r =-0.985,-0.984,-0.981, respectively; all p 0.001). Our hypothesis was accepted because mean richness significantly decreased from the lower to the upper limit of AFE(p 0.001). Generally, monotonic patterns of decline in richness were observed for trees, shrubs and lianas. The contribution of shrubs to total richness increased with increasing elevation whereas that of trees and lianas decreased.  相似文献

The highlands of Ethiopia suffer much from environmental degradation. Funded by the European Union, an interdisciplinary team carried out research using geographical information and remote sensing technology to analyse degradation and to provide support for rehabilitation planning. The degradation was analysed on a subregional scale, using 25×25 metre grids, which was an innovative and challenging aspect of the research and did justice to the high spatial variability of the area. The universal soil loss equation (USLE) was employed to assess the potential and actual erosion risk. The factors for the erosion models were derived from the basic data using expert rules. The research illustrates how a geographical information system (GIS) can play an important role in supporting rehabilitation planning at both the farm and the subregional levels. The results show the locations where rehabilitation is most urgently needed. From the results, it can be concluded that different processes are of importance at different scale levels. At the farm level, attention should be paid to the erosion protection measures used by the farmer. However, on a higher scale, factors such as the presence of towns, accessibility of the area and the presence of malaria play a role. Further research is required to study and model the influence of these factors on the environment. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The Afromontane forests of Ethiopia have been under a serious degradation threat. Assessment of floristic diversity and species composition in Biteyu forest of Gurage mountain chain in the central Ethiopia was conducted to examine the pattern of forest structure. Thirty plots of 30 m×30 m were used to record the vegetation and environmental data using systematic sampling technique. The local name, plant scientific names, DBH, height, species abundance and percentage canopy cover of plant species were recorded. Shannon diversity index and Sorensen's coefficients was used for comparison among communities and similar forests in the country. Threats to the forest biodiversity in Biteyu were determined by counting cattle interference and wood stumps as disturbance indicators. Relative Euclidean Distance measures by using Ward's method(linkage) was applied for cluster analysis. Environmental variables were also recorded in each plot. Woody species population structure, basal area and importance value index were analyzed using spreadsheet programs. Data on species distribution and environmental variables in the forest were analyzed by canonical correspondence analysis. A total of 190 species in 154 genera under 73 families were identified. Twenty species were found to be endemic taxa to the Flora Area. Only three plant community types were identified from the cluster analysis due to the high human influence. The Sorensen's coefficient showed the resemblance of the Biteyu forest with other Dry Evergreen Afromontane forests in the country. Moreover, altitude and slope strongly affect the species composition and structure of Biteyu forest. Given the high anthropogenic influence, high endemism, high dependence of the local community on the forest resources, forest conservation and restoration measures should be done by stakeholders.  相似文献

A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence of epizootic lymphangitis (EL) in 309 cart-mules (cart-pulling mules) in Bako and Ejaji towns, Western Ethiopia using clinical and microbiological examinations, between November 2002 and April 2003. The overall prevalence was 21% (CI = 16.6–26%). The clinical, histological and mycological characteristics of EL in a cart-mule were similar with those in a horse. There was significant (χ2 = 133.5, P = 0.001) association between tick infestation and EL lesions in study cart-mules. Amblyoma coherence and Boophilus genera were the ticks collected from lesions of cases of EL, and thus played a predisposing role. In conclusion, our results showed that EL has high prevalence in cart-mules in the two towns.  相似文献
