The use of saline waters is an option for the irrigation of salt tolerant ornamentals as competition for high quality water increases. However, despite the importance of ornamental shrubs in Mediterranean areas, salt tolerance of such species has received little attention. The aims of our investigation were to quantify the growth response and any injury symptom of 12 widely cultivated ornamental shrubs to irrigation with saline water and to investigate any possible relation with the concentration of Na+ and Cl in the plants. Species were irrigated with different salinities (10, 40, and 70 mM NaCl) for a 120-day period. At the end of salt treatment, plants were sampled and dry biomass recorded; the relative growth rate (RGR) was also calculated. Root and leaf samples from each species were used to evaluate Na+, K+ and Cl concentrations. Growth rates were significantly reduced in Cotoneaster lacteus, Grevillea juniperina and Pyracantha ‘Harlequin’, which also showed the highest percentage of necrotic leaves. The increasing external NaCl lead to an increase of Na+ and Cl in roots and leaves of the different species, although less Na+ was accumulated than Cl: growth reduction well correlated with the concentration of Cl and/or Na+ in the leaves. The most sensitive species (i.e. C. lacteus, G. juniperina and Pyracantha ‘Harlequin’) had high concentrations of Na+ and/or Cl in their leaves and also showed a decrease in their leaf K+/Na+ ratios. Even though other species (i.e. Bougainvillea glabra, Ceanothus thyrsiflorus, Leptospermum scoparium, Leucophyllum frutescens and Ruttya fruticosa) demonstrated a high ion concentration in their leaves, they could be considered relatively salt tolerant as there was little growth reduction and few symptoms of injury in the leaves. In some other cases (i.e. Cestrum fasciculatum, Escallonia rubra and Viburnum lucidum) the observed tolerance was related to higher ion concentration in the roots compared to the leaves, probably indicative of a limited transport to the shoots. Only in Eugenia myrtifolia was the absence of symptoms associated with a limited Na+ and Cl uptake from the rhizosphere.  相似文献

At different locations in Zürich (urban and suburban area) ambient aerosol has been measured by a variety of methods. Total mass concentration, black carbon mass concentration, size distribution, Fuchs surface and photoelectric charging of particles (as a measure for the PAH concentration) have been determined. As a reference for “fresh” aerosol, measurements have also been carried out in a car parking garage. By comparing the data obtained at different locations and different times of the day aging processes can be investigated. All measured signals show significant peaks during the rush-hours, indicating that the majority of the particles arise from automotive traffic. Aging is expressed by decreasing number concentrations, increasing diameter (coagulation) and decreasing black carbon and PAH content of the particles. The decrease in PAH and black carbon fraction may be due to mixing of the aerosol with non-combustion particles or by condensation of material from the gas phase on the particle; the decrease in PAH concentration may also be due to degradation of the PAHs.  相似文献

Microwave cooking of legumes such as chickpeas and common beans was evaluated by assessing the cooking quality (cooking time, firmness, cooking losses, and water uptake) and the physicochemical, nutritional, and microstructural modifications in starch and nonstarch polysaccharides. Compared to conventional cooking, microwave cooking with sealed vessels enabled a drastic reduction in cooking time, from 110 to 11 min for chickpeas and from 55 to 9 min for common beans. The solid losses, released in the cooking water, were significantly less after microwave cooking than after conventional cooking (6.5 vs 10.6 g/100 g of dry seed in chickpeas and 4.5 vs 7.5 g/100 g of dry seed in common beans). Both cooking procedures produced a redistribution of the insoluble nonstarch polysaccharides to soluble fraction, although the total nonstarch polysaccharides were not affected. Increases in in vitro starch digestibility were similar after both cooking processes, since the level of resistant starch decreased from 27.2 and 32.5% of total starch in raw chickpeas and beans, respectively, to about 10% in cooked samples and the level of rapidly digestible starch increased from 35.6 and 27.5% to about 80%. SEM studies showed that the cotyledons maintained a regular structure although most of the cell wall was broken down and shattered by both cooking procedures. In addition, the ultrastructural modifications in the cotyledon's parenchima and cells are consistent with the chemical modifications in NSP and the increase in starch digestibility after cooking.  相似文献

Summary

Experimental data of the transpiration and surface temperature of detached tomato fruits were collected to study and analyse how tomato fruit transpiration (E) was related to fruit characteristics, growth stage and climatic conditions. The measurements were carried out (i) in controlled conditions on fruits weighing between 10 and 140 g and (ii) during several summer days on fruits of 60–100 g under two greenhouse compartments with contrasted (high and low) levels of air vapour pressure difference (VPDa). The transpiration rate, when expressed on a fruit area basis (g cm–2 h–1 ), showed only a very slight dependence upon weight. Linear models relating E in unit area to (i) VPAa and (ii) VPD (fr-a) (fruit-to-air vapour pressure difference) by means of a total conductance to water vapour (gt), were proposed and their parameters were identified for fruits grown under the high and low VPD regimes. These models were able to explain a significant part of the observed variation in fruit transpiration. The parameters of the model differed with respect to growth conditions. The results evidenced the role of both fruit characteristics and climatic conditions on fruit transpiration and that the response of fruit transpiration to VPD could be separated into two components: (i) a short-term and reversible response which seems to be related to instantaneous changes in cuticular hydration linked to the prevailing VPD conditions and (ii) a long-term and irreversible response due to cuticle characteristics which depend on the average level of VPD experienced by the fruit during its growth.  相似文献

Eight Phaseolus vulgaris L. landraces cultivated on farm in marginal areas of Central Italy (Lazio region) were investigated in order to evaluate chemical composition of storage proteins and secondary metabolites fractions. The total protein content showed some differences among landraces; the maximum value was next to 30 g for 100 g of dry weight. The seed storage proteins were screened by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS/PAGE): seven landraces exhibited phaseolin patterns type S, one landrace showed a phaseolin pattern type T. A morphological analysis of cotyledon parenchyma performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed differences in size of starch granules. Moreover the polyphenolic composition was investigated using HPLC-APCI; from the methanol extracts a flavonoid, kaempferol, and a coumarin, 5,7-dimethoxycoumarin, were identified. To our knowledge, this is the first time that 5,7-dimethoxycoumarin has been reported in P. vulgaris seeds.  相似文献

Two yr old beech saplings (Fagus sylvatica L.) were exposed under an early autumn climate to four levels of O3 (10, 40, 75, and 110 nL L O3) with or without preceding simulated acidic mist (pH 3.5). As a first response in gas exchange to O3, stomatal conductance was transiently increased followed by a decline in net photosynthesis. Thus, regarding exposure effects on stomatal behavior, both O3 and acidic mist increased the pollutant flux into the leaf interior. The subsequent impairment of cell permeability consisted of dose-dependent increases in efflux rates of dichlorofluorescein, indicating greater membrane permeabilities. While the efflux rates of Mg and Ca correlated with those of the fluorescent dye, the leachability of K was increased only at the highest O3 levels. Changes in compartmentation of K, Ca, Mg, and S was derived from selective cell wall extraction; thereafter, the exposure to O3 and acidic mist resulted in increased extracellular fractions of these elements.  相似文献

Abstract

The aim of the experiment was to verify how the adoption of a reduced strength nutrient solution in a soilless closed system could influence the production and quality of pepper and improve the use efficiency of water and minerals. Two nutrient solutions characterized by the same ion ratio but macronutrient concentration equal to 100% or 60% were adopted. The total yield did not differ between the treatments; however the lower concentration of nutrients determined a significant reduction of incidence of unmarketable fruits (blossom-end rot) and thus a higher marketable production (+15%). Within the fruit quality characteristics the dry matter content and the titratable acidity were significantly higher adopting the full strength nutrient solution. Important differences were found when the agronomic water use efficiency was considered: the weight of marketable pepper produced per m3 of water input was about 32% higher using the reduced concentration treatment according to the lower volume of water released in the environment due to the lower renewal of recirculated nutrient solution. A similar pattern was observed for the use efficiency of the main nutrients. With reduced strength nutrient solution the amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium released per ton of marketable tomatoes were respectively 83%, 80% and 81% lower than the control. The use of a reduced strength nutrient solution in soilless closed system for pepper cultivation did not influence the total yield and improved the use efficiency of water and minerals. Moreover, the environmental impact of the system was drastically reduced.  相似文献
