Although crop residue management is known to affect near‐surface soil physical quality, little is known about the temporal variability of these indicators over short time intervals. This study evaluates the temporal changes of nine indicators of soil physical quality. These are organic carbon content, structural stability index, bulk density, macroporosity, air capacity, relative field capacity, plant available water capacity, Dexter's S‐index and saturated hydraulic conductivity. A second set of soil physical indicators, based on the distribution of soil pore volume, was also evaluated. The indicators were determined in three different times during the growing cycle of winter durum wheat cultivated within a long‐term field research carrying out in Southern Italy and comparing two types of crop residue management, that is, burning (B) and soil incorporation (I). Only the bulk density changed over time for both treatments, although the air capacity also changed for the incorporation of wheat residues. Residual effects of the autumnal soil tillage and soil compaction were a common source of variability, irrespective of which treatment was used. Based on the existing guidelines for evaluating the physical quality of these agricultural soils, optimal or near‐optimal values were detected in about half of the cases under consideration. This suggests that both B and I create sufficiently good conditions for crop growth during the crop cycle. The comparison between observed and optimal soil pore distribution function was always poor. The pore volume distributions showed lower densities of small pores and relatively higher densities of large pores than the proposed optimal distribution. This study also suggests that the considered optimal or references curves probably cannot be applied successfully to a wide range of agricultural soils. 相似文献

Artificial insemination is extensively performed in pig farms in Europe, the United States and Canada. Antibiotics are typically added to the inseminating dose to limit bacterial growth during liquid phase storage at 16°C, as bacterial contamination is unavoidable. The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) take action to control and reduce antibiotic use in animals as more bacteria are becoming resistant to antimicrobials. To avoid the use of antibiotics, we prepared inseminating doses using microfiltered seminal plasma (SP). Microfiltration is a common technology used to reduce bacterial contamination but may retain seminal substances, influencing sperm quality during storage. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the morphofunctional parameters of spermatozoa during storage at 16°C in doses prepared with or without microfiltered SP, with or without the addition of antibiotics, in a Latin square design. Artificial insemination doses with microfiltered SP and without antibiotic addition preserved spermatozoa viability, mitochondrial membrane potential, acrosome integrity and objective motility, with absolute values equal or even better than those observed in conventional doses. In conclusion, although the results could be considered preliminary due to the small sample size, this study suggests that microfiltration of SP can be a simple method, feasible on farms, to replace antibiotic use in extended doses stored in the liquid phase at 16°C for up to 7 days. 相似文献

A field experiment was carried out in Southern Italy from 2007 to 2010 adopting a two-year rotation of tomato and maize. In this paper, the results of maize cultivation were reported, with the aim to investigate the effects of different water qualities and fertilizers on yield and soil properties. The following treatments were compared: mineral nitrogen (N) fertilizer and irrigation with fresh water (FWF); mineral N fertilizer and irrigation with saline water (SWF); Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) compost and irrigation with fresh water (FWC); MSW compost and irrigation with saline water (SWC). These treatments were compared with an unfertilized control and irrigation with fresh-water (FW0) and an unfertilized control and irrigation with saline water (SW0). At harvest, yield, grain moisture content, dry matter, grain protein, starch, fat content and soil characteristics were determined. The treatments with compost increased the average grain yield of the 11% compared to mineral fertilizer treatments. Furthermore, the grain yield in SWC increased of the 19% respect to average of SWF and SW0, indicating that MSW compost applied as amendment mitigated the adversely effects of saline water. Compost application significantly increased the Total Organic Carbon (TOC). In particular, the FWC and SWC treatments showed an average increase of the 25% compared to the mean TOC value of FWF and SWF. Moreover, at the end of the experiment, electrical conductivity decreased in SWC treatment respect to the SWF (?21%). 相似文献

The use of organic amendments in agriculture could sustain crop production and preserve the agroecosystem, due to their importance in the conservation of organic matter in soil. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of differing organic fertilizers and of previous crops on lettuce growth, nutritional status and yields. The effects on soil characteristics were further investigated. The research was carried out during two years (2006 and 2007) at Metaponto (MT) in southern Italy, on lettuce crops cultivated after eggplant and melon to avoid their continuous cropping. The effects of application of a mineral fertilizer (MF), and of three treatments with organic fertilizers (commercial stable manure - OM; anaerobic digestate based on wine distillery wastewater - AD; composted municipal solid organic wastes coming from the separate collection - MSW) were studied. Head average weight, leaf area index, nitrate content and SPAD readings during the cropping cycles did not show significant differences among fertilizer treatments. On the contrary, marketable yield and head average weight at the harvest presented significantly different among the three organic fertilizers. The average marketable yield and head average weight of organic fertilizers experimental (AD and MSW treatments) decreased of 16 and 17%, respectively, compared to OM treatment. The previous melon crop influenced positively all analyzed parameters of the lettuce compared with previous eggplant crop. The previous melon crop reached the highest marketable yield with an increase of 59% compared with previous eggplant crop. Compared to the mineral fertilizer, the organic ones significantly increased the extracted fraction of soil organic carbon (6.9, 10.7 and 14.9% for OM, AD and MSW, respectively), without significant changes for the humic and fulvic content. 相似文献

This study characterizes dehydration and white blush processes, structural alterations and synthesis of phenolic compounds (lignin and suberin), in relation to development of white blush on baby carrot surfaces. Carrots were minimally processed as baby carrots and kept on polypropylene trays with or without polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film at 5 ± 2 °C, 90 ± 5% RH. During storage, baby carrots that were not wrapped with PVC film were rehydrated 1, 1.5, 15 and 17 h after minimal processing. Fresh-cut baby carrots were evaluated for white blush index, sensory analysis (visual scores), fresh matter loss, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity and structural and histochemical changes. Increases in white blush index and subjective visual scores on the carrot surface occurred in the first hours, when the material was kept on trays without PVC film and after 3 and 6 d, when stored on trays covered with PVC film. Visual assessment of white blush resulted in a more accurate assessment than instrumental evaluation because it allowed the perception of minor differences between distinct white blush levels, especially at the tips. Hydrating baby carrot surfaces for 1 and 1.5 h after processing allowed partial absorption of water by tissues and the orange color was reestablished on the surface. Fifteen hours after processing, even after rehydration, the color did not return to the original orange standard. The rapid increase in PAL activity in the secondary phloem of baby carrots, compared to that of whole carrots, suggested a physiological response as a result of abrasion. Dehydration and structural alterations of the more superficial cell layers were the main causes of white blush in baby carrots that was not related to lignin accumulation, but rather to synthesis of non-structural phenolic compounds. 相似文献

Rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum were fed a pelleted diet (14.3% wet weight lipid) containing 9 p.p.m. 3, 5, 3′‐triiodo‐l ‐thyronine (T3) for 1 month and then transferred from fresh water to brackish water (average 22 p.p.t. salinity), where they were maintained untreated for 22 days. Trout fed a control diet were subjected to the same protocol. For both treated and control trout, liver lipid and fatty acid composition, mitochondrial respiratory activity and oxidative phosphorylation and (Na+ + K+)‐ATPase activity were monitored in fish sampled periodically throughout the trial. No differences between treated and control trout occurred in liver total lipid, phospholipid and cholesterol content or fatty acid composition. Conversely, irrespective of T3 administration, the trout from the two habitats showed adaptive changes to salinity, differing in phospholipids and in the fatty acid composition of total and neutral lipids and selected phospholipids. Liver membrane permeability and mitochondrial respiratory activity were affected by both T3 treatment and salinity transfer. The latter was apparently greater than the former in affecting mitochondrial respiratory activity. The higher (Na+ + K+)‐ATPase activity in T3‐treated trout after 22 days in brackish water may reflect long‐term effects of the hormone linked to salinity adaptation. 相似文献

The CROPGRO simulation model was calibrated for processing tomato in Southern Italy with a 2002 data set and validated with three independent data sets with acceptable results. Subsequently this model was combined with 53 years of local historical weather data and it was used as a research tool to evaluate the benefits, risks and costs of 23 different interactive irrigation and/or N-management scenarios. Irrigation water was applied (i) on reported dates with 3 and 5 days intervals and application rates of 15 and 25 mm or (ii) with automatic irrigation initiated at residual soil moisture levels in the upper 30 cm of the soil profile of 25, 50, or 75%. Three amount levels of N application (100, 200 and 300 kg ha−1 as ammonium nitrate) were considered. A simple economic analysis, including tomato marketable yield and price, irrigation and nitrogen cost and other fixed production costs, was used to estimate expected net return for each management scenario. 相似文献
