A captive female square‐lipped rhinoceros born in 1993 had been showing intermittent signs of bilateral conjunctivitis and conjunctival proliferation since 1998. Periodic improvement was noted, especially in winter, but overall the condition had deteriorated over the years. Treatment with various topical, intralesional, and systemic antibiotics and glucocorticosteroids was largely ineffective, as were repeated dewormings. No primary cause for these lesions was found in biopsies taken in 2000 and 2006, although a severe infiltrate of numerous eosinophils was observed in the latter. As the condition worsened, secondary corneal changes were noted, and eventually vision was lost due to proliferative conjunctival tissue. Aggressive resection of the proliferating tissue in 2013 restored vision and submitted biopsies yielded a diagnosis of severe allergic conjunctivitis, eosinophilic granuloma, and habronematid (Habronema or Draschia) larval infection. As no other rhinoceros in the herd was affected, including two calves born to the patient who were in close contact with their mother, it was concluded the presentation was most likely due to a hypersensitivity reaction to the dead or dying larvae. Fly repellent is now regularly applied around the eye of this rhinoceros, and a protective face mask has been fitted. Ongoing periodic relapses are treated with oral ivermectin, topical antibiotics, and steroids.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To obtain the anatomic and morphometric data required for biomechanical analysis of the hind limb in dogs. ANIMALS: A healthy adult mixed-breed 23-kg male dog. PROCEDURE: Following euthanasia of the dog, all muscles of the right hind limb were identified and meticulously removed. Physiologic cross-sectional areas (PCSA) and architectural indices (AI) were calculated. The coordinates for the origin and insertion of each muscle were determined, using orthogonal right-handed coordinate systems embedded in the pelvis, femur, and tibia. RESULTS: PCSA and AI were calculated for 29 muscles, and coordinates for the origins and insertions of these muscles were determined. CONCLUSIONS: Results provide the morphometric and anatomic data necessary for 3-dimensional biomechanical studies of the hind limb in dogs.  相似文献

Toxoplasmosis     
Toxoplasmosis is a common infection of animals and man, yet remains a rare disease. The disease appears in the offspring of mothers first infected during pregnancy and by relapse of chronic infection in immunodeficient animals and man. Toxoplasmosis can be prevented by the simplest of hygienic measures, such as handwashing. Further control can be achieved by widespread education of the public about the dangers of toxoplasmosis and the methods of prevention. Education of veterinary and zoo workers would reduce transmission in an environment where it is most likely to occur because of high concentrations of cats and cat feces. Toxoplasmosis of sheep and pigs on farms may be amenable to vaccination with the ts-4 strain of Toxoplasma. Finally, the new T-263 toxoplasmosis vaccine for cats offers the possibility of drastically reducing environmental contamination with oocysts, especially on farms. The reduction in numbers of viable oocysts in the environment would eventually reduce the infection of bird and rodent intermediate hosts, and ultimately, the infection of humans.  相似文献

Forty-seven suspensions of type A virus grown in surviving bovine tongue epithelium (Frenkel) cultures were compared in a quantitative complement fixation test (CFT) and an antibody combining test (ACT) to evaluate the antigenic mass of the 140 S component, and with three assay methods for infectivity titration.The cultures were then converted into vaccines and the potency of these was measured with a guinea-pig PD50 test and again with the ACT. The relationship between the results obtained with different methods used for titration of infectivity, i.e. baby mice and plaque counting in BHK cells in monolayer (BHK-M) or suspended in agar (BHK-S) was poor and, with the exception of the BHK-S technique, showed little correlation with the results of the serological tests.The correlation coefficient between values obtained by the CFT and the ACT on virus cultures was 0.82 and that between CFT and ACT on vaccines 0.88. The guinea-pig PD50's of 19 vaccines were compared with the ACT and with the CFT and ACT of the corresponding cultures yielding r values of 0.74, 0.62 and 0.62 respectively. Regression lines are presented for the different relations.An accurate cattle PD50 was determined for two vaccines of the series, using groups of 20 animals per vaccine dilution. The relationship between guinea-pig PD50 (X) and cattle PD50 (Y), expressed by the regression formula Y = 1.05 X + 0.84, showed that differences in cattle PD50's are of the same magnitude as those observed in the guinea-pig test, provided that sufficient numbers of animals are used for both tests.The results of the quantitative CFT and ACT were in good agreement with the guinea-pig test and as such these tests can provide valuable information on the quality of Frenkel cultures.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to isolate, identify and characterize ascochyta blight pathogens from Cicer judaicum , a wild annual Cicer species which grows in Israel and other Mediterranean countries in sympatric distribution with legume crops, and determine their virulence and aggressiveness to other wild and domesticated legumes. Native C. judaicum plants exhibited symptoms resembling ascochyta diseases of grain legume crops. Two distinct pathogens were isolated and identified as Phoma pinodella and Didymella rabiei using morphological and molecular tools; their infectivity was verified using Koch's postulates. The virulence of these pathogens was examined on 13 legume species, of which P. pinodella was virulent to Pisum sativum , P. fulvum , C. judaicum , C. arietinum , C. reticulatum , C. pinnatifidum and C. bijugum . Didymella rabiei infected all these Cicer species, but not the other legume species tested. Aggressiveness of the pathogens was tested on wild and domesticated chickpea and pea. Didymella rabiei isolated from C. judaicum had significantly higher ( P  < 0·001) aggressiveness than P. pinodella from C. judaicum on both wild and domesticated chickpea. Disease severity on the former species ranged from 62·5% to 70% and on the latter from 41% to 56%. Phoma pinodella isolates from C. judaicum were more aggressive on C. arietinum and P. sativum than on C. judaicum and P. fulvum . Results of the current study suggest that C. judaicum may serve as an alternative host to ascochyta pathogens that endanger chickpea and possibly other crops and wild species growing in close proximity.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to describe seven cases of unilateral bacterial infective coxarthritis from a total of 19 cases of bacterial infective arthritis (BIA), presenting over a two year period. We recorded the history, clinical signs, diagnostic process, treatment and clinical outcome in these cases. The data were obtained from medical records, review of the radiographs, and telephone follow-up with the owners. All of the dogs in this study had severe chronic osteoarthritis secondary to hip dysplasia, which caused periodic hind limb lameness. They were all admitted with severe acute hind-limb lameness. Pelvic radiographs were performed under general anaesthesia shortly after presentation, followed immediately by arthrocentesis of the affected joint. The synovial fluid was evaluated microscopically by direct smear and a sample was sent for culture and sensitivity. An attempt was not made to drain or lavage the affected joint during the course of treatment. The initial choice of antibiotics was empiric and subsequently modified, as required, based on the sensitivity results. Four of the dogs showed a rapid return to weight-bearing after the initiation of antibiotic treatment, and all of the patients returned to their pre-BIA level of function. Neither recurrent infections nor any adverse sequela requiring further intervention were reported by the owners on telephone follow-up.  相似文献

Immunity to toxoplasmosis in hamsters   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Protective immunity to Toxoplasma was studied in hamsters. Immunity developed in 2 to 3 weeks after vaccinations were performed. Vaccination with live RH, T-45, and ts-4 strains afforded the best protection against challenge exposure with the most pathogenic RH strain used. Even a killed-toxoplasma vaccine protected all hamsters against the slightly less pathogenic T-1 strain through 24 weeks, but it did not protect hamsters against challenge exposure with the RH strain. Both ts-4, a nonpersistent strain, and killed-toxoplasma vaccine provided protective immunity in hamsters that was not dependent upon premunition. Toxoplasma antibody titers in hamsters given the 2 vaccines were similar. However, there was a difference in the quality of immunity: fever and body weight loss were seen in hamsters vaccinated with the killed-toxoplasma vaccine after they were challenge exposed with T-1 strain, whereas these changes were rarely seen in hamsters given the live-toxoplasma vaccine and then challenge exposed with RH strain. Delayed-type hypersensitivity to Toxoplasma antigen always appeared before protective immunity and was detected in all hamsters by 4 days after vaccination with live-toxoplasma strains. Although the development of delayed-type hypersensitivity preceded protective immunity, it was not indicative that protective immunity was present or would develop.  相似文献
