Control of seed-borne Sclerotinia sclerotiorum by fungicidal treatment of sunflower seed

Treatment of sunflower seeds with benomyl, vinclozolin, iprodione or procymidone virtually eliminated seed-borne Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. Applications of fungicides increased the number of surviving seedlings when seeds were sown in vermiculite or in steam-sterilized soil. With the exception of benomyl, fungicides were significantly more effective when applied in acetone solutions than when 100 g a.i./100 kg of seed was applied as conventional dry dressings. There was no difference in effectiveness between the two application methods when the dry dressings were applied at 200 g a.i/100 kg of seed. The acetone infusion method had no deleterious effects on germination of disease-free seed nor on seedling vigour. For a comparable level of control, less fungicide was needed in the infusion treatment than in the dust treatment. If fungicidal treatment of sunflower seeds is used routinely then the introduction of S. sclerotiorum into uninfested land could be controlled.     

Root rot of cabbage caused by Phytophthora drechsleri

A root rot of cabbage is reported from South Africa. The causal pathogen was identified as Phytophthora drechsleri , based on morphological characters and electrophoretic patterns of soluble proteins.     

Rhizoctonia leaf spot of tobacco in South Africa

Leaf spot of tobacco caused by Rhizoctonia solani isreported forthe first time from South Africa. All the leaf spot isolates anastomosed with the AG-3 tester strain.     

The occurrence of carbendazim resistance in Rhynchosporium secalis on winter barley in England and Wales in 1992 and 1993

In 1992, samples of Rhynchosporium secalis from 19 winter barley crops in England and Wales were examined for carbendazim resistance. Of the 120 isolates obtained, 14·2% were resistant to carbendazim. A larger survey was carried out in England and Wales in 1993 when samples from 74 crops were examined. On this occasion 16·6% of the 639 isolates obtained were resistant to carbendazim, and resistant isolates were detected in 46% of crops.     

Equine Cryptorchidism: Pre-surgical Considerations and Surgical Management

Horses with undescended testes are frequently presented to the veterinary surgeon for castration. The pertinent pre-operative evaluations and diagnostic procedures that should be made prior to either surgical intervention or referral of such cases are outlined. Several accepted anesthetic and surgical techniques are similarly reviewed. Case histories of 58 horses referred during a two year period are reviewed and correlated with the findings of a recent study of equine testicular development and descent.
