Haematological and biochemical investigations were performed on 14 koalas with uncomplicated cystitis, 8 with complicated cystitis, 8 with conjunctivitis, 8 with lymphosarcoma, and 14 with miscellaneous diseases. Changes were limited and inconsistent in individual koalas with uncomplicated cystitis and conjunctivitis. In contrast, individual koalas with complicated cystitis were more likely to have anaemia, leukocytosis due to neutrophilia, hypoproteinaemia due to hypoalbuminaemia, and azotaemia due to elevated urea concentration. Although these changes were non-specific they did allow assessment of prognosis for survival and response to treatment. Koalas with lymphosarcoma were invariably anaemic, leukaemic, azotaemic and hypoalbuminaemic. Elevated enzymes (aspartate transaminase [AST]. lactate dehydrogenase [LD] and gamma glutamyl transferase [GGT]) were more common in koalas with lymphosarcoma. Koalas affected by miscellaneous conditions showed variable changes but once again anaemia, leukocytosis, azotaemia, elevated AST and LD, and hypoalbuminaemia were not uncommon. On the basis of these findings a minimal profile is suggested for the investigation of sick koalas and would include haematocrit, total and differential leukocyte counts, urea, total protein and albumin concentrations and AST, GGT and LD activities.

Chicks and chickens maintained under commercial conditions were vaccinated against Newcastle Disease via drinking water. Prior and after different times of vaccination blood samples were drawn from different numbers of birds and checked for HI antibodies. The modes of distribution of the antibody titers within the random sample were assayed. The following results were obtained:
1. 1. On the basis of the distribution of the serum titers can be concluded whether the antibody level within a flock is increasing or decreasing.
◦ —A right steep asymmetry can be observed up to 20 days post vaccination.
◦ —In the phase of maximal antibody levels an almost symmetric distribution of the titers is present.
◦ —In later times (more than three weeks p. vacc.) the distribution shows a left steep asymmetry (Poisson distribution).
2. 2. A poisson distribution is also observable during the elimination of maternal antibodies of chicks until complete elimination.
3. 3. The mode of distribution of the HI titers in sera of day-old chicks correlates with the mode of distribution of the dams. Therefore, conclusions are possible from the status of the chicks to the dams and reverse.
4. 4. Factors which interfere with the mode of distribution are:
◦ —Two or more peaks after vaccination of chickens. This indicates an uneven immune response within the flock.
◦ —Distributions with several peaks may also occur if flocks are composed of day-old chicks from parent flocks with different levels of antibody titers.

A total of 54 domestic white meat-type geese were included in vaccination/challenge trials to evaluate susceptibility to disease and humoral immune responses using the haemagglutination inhibition (HI) and virus neutralization (VN) tests against Newcastle disease (ND). Two groups of twenty geese, five weeks of age, were conjunctivally vaccinated with either 100 x 10(6) or 2.5 x 10(6) EID50 (egg infectious dose 50 per cent) per bird of live La Sota virus, respectively, and 14 geese remained unvaccinated. At 15 weeks of age all vaccinated geese and seven unvaccinated geese were subcutaneously injected with 0.5 ml of inactivated oil emulsion ND vaccine, whereas seven geese remained as negative controls. At an age of 20 weeks, all 54 geese were challenged with 10(8.0) EID50 per bird of the viscerotropic velogenic NDV strain Herts 33/56. Live virus application as well as the oil emulsion vaccine did not induce discernible clinical signs and have no detrimental effect on body weight gains. At days 1, 3, 5, 8, 13, 16, 20, 23 and 27 after the application of lentogenic vaccine pharyngeal and cloacal swabs were taken, after challenge samples were taken at days 2, 5 and 8. Lentogenic as well as velogenic virus were never reisolated. Low and shortlived antibody responses post vaccination were equally well measured in HI and VN tests. Only two out of seven unvaccinated but challenged geese developed signs of ND whereas all vaccinated/challenged geese remained normal but developed high to moderate levels of HI and VN antibodies. Since domestic geese do not readily excrete NDV's in detectable amounts and since they do not contain detectable amounts of the challenge virus fourteen days post challenge in their tissues the assumption is promoted that geese do not play a major role in the epidemiology of Newcastle disease.

Newcastle disease (ND) remains to be the worldwide most important infectious disease of poultry. This epizootic is in Germany and many other countries a notifiable disease. Prophylactic vaccination is the major tool for the control of ND in poultry and other birds. Eighty-three ostriches (Struthio camelus) which were kept on farms in Germany were checked for the presence of NDV-specific antibodies. Some of these birds are said to be vaccinated against Newcastle disease. Only some of these ostriches contained antibodies which were measurable in haemagglutination inhibition and virus neutralisation tests. Twenty-three previously unvaccinated ostriches were vaccinated with commercially available vaccines. Both the LaSota live and inactivated oil emulsion vaccines were well tolerated following conjunctival or subcutaneous application, respectively. Neither local nor systemic side reactions were observed. After the vaccinations high antibody titres were detected in hemagglutination inhibition and virus neutralisation tests. A strong correlation between both established methods (r = 0.92; < 0.001) were noted.

Various materials with rough surfaces were tested to determine their suitability for virus carrier tests designed to evaluate virucidal activity of chemical disinfectants. A non-enveloped RNA virus, bovine enterovirus type 1, strain LCR 4 [entero cytopathogenic bovine orphan virus (ECBO)] and an enveloped RNA virus, paramyxovirus type 1 [Newcastle disease virus (NDV), strain Montana] served as test viruses. Experiments with ECBO virus were carried out in four sets, and those with NDV in three sets. In the first set we used poplar wood, frosted glass slides and Sartorius membrane filters. The second set comprised of poplar wood, frosted glass slides, polyamide filters, and cellulose nitrate filters and, in the third set, glass fibre filters and glass fibre pre-filters were added. The fourth test included poplar wood, frosted glass slides, and polyethersulphone ultra filters. Because of their extremely low levels of virus recovery, glass, polyamide, cellulose nitrate and glass fibre filter, glass fibre pre-filter, and polyethersulphone ultra filters are not suitable for sufficient recovery of ECBO virus. Only poplar wood carriers allowed sufficient recovery rates of ECBO virus. In the first and second set of tests, NDV could be sufficiently recovered from poplar wood, glass slides, and polyamide filter. In the third set, the virus recovery from polyamide filter was very low. Poplar wood carrier is recommended as a reliable carrier for the tests with both viruses, but methods for virus recovery must be improved, e.g. by more vigorous and longer shaking or optimizing the ultrasonic treatment.
