Hepatic Lobe Torsion as a Cause of Colic in a Horse   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A 14-year-old Arabian gelding was examined for colic. An exploratory celiotomy was subsequently performed and the left lobe of the liver was found to be twisted. The lobe was resected using a TA-90 surgical stapling instrument. Histologic examination of the resected liver indicated portal vein and sinusoid dilation and congestion with blood. There were focal areas of necrosis and bacterial cocci and rods throughout the section. The histologic findings were consistent with hepatic lobe torsion. After surgery, the horse was treated with broad spectrum antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, heparin, and intravenous fluids. The horse recovered without complications, although serum liver enzymes remained elevated for more than 1 week after surgery. Seven months after surgery the horse showed no adverse affects from the disease.  相似文献

In an experiment with pure-culture sclerotia of Sclerotium cepivorum and Stromatinia gladioli a large proportion of the sclerotia survived burial for 20 years in the field in the absence of host plants. Some evidence for metabolic activity or leakage leading to the gradual erosion of the sclerotial contents was obtained with S. cepivorum . The results of other experiments suggested that, for unknown reasons, a variable proportion of sclerotia formed naturally on infected plants may decay shortly after their formation, but those which survive beyond this limited period are likely to remain viable for many years. The viability of sclerotia was also reduced by prolonged flooding, but the period for which land would have to be under water excludes this as a method of eliminating sclerotia from infested land in the UK. Treatment with the mycoparasite Teratosperma oligocladum did not affect the survival or infectivity of sclerotia of S. cepivorum or S. gladioli .  相似文献

In fourteen dogs with osteochondritis dissecans of the stifle joint the lesion was found in the articular cartilage of the medial condyle of the femur in six and the lateral condyle in eight. Both stifle joints were affected in eight dogs and in two of these, both Wolfhounds, the shoulder joints were also affected. Ten dogs were treated surgically and three by conservative means. Objective—To compare plasma fentanyl concentrations attained after the application of three transdermal fentanyl patch sizes (50, 75, and 100 μg/hour) in dogs. Design—Repeated Latin square controlled study. Animals—Six intact, mixed-breed adult dogs (2 males, 4 females) weighing 19.9 ± 3.4 kg. Methods—Each dog was randomly assigned to receive each of three treatments: 50 (P50), 75 (P75), or 100 (P100) μg/hour transdermal patches. Patches were left in place for 72 hours. Jugular venous blood was collected at 1,2, 4, 8, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72 hours after patch application and for 1, 2, 4, 8, and 12 hours after patch removal. Plasma fentanyl concentrations were measured using a radioimmunoassay technique. After a 96-hour washout period, each dog was moved to another treatment group and received a different patch size. Results—The following results were obtained (mean ± SD): average plasma fentanyl concentration from 24 to 72 hours, 0.7 ± 0.2 ng/mL (P50), 1.4 ± 0.5 ng/mL (P75), 1.2 ± 0.5 ng/mL (P100); the total area under the concentration versus time curve (0 hours to infinity), 46 ± 12.2 ng/h/mL (P50), 101.2 ± 41.4 ng/h/mL (P75), 80.4 ± 38.3 ng/h/mL (P100); and the apparent elimination half-life, 3.6 ± 1.2 hours (P50), 3.4 ± 2.7 hours (P75), and 2.5 ± 2.0 hours (P100). There was a high degree of variability in plasma fentanyl concentrations achieved. Plasma fentanyl concentrations declined rapidly after patch removal. Conclusions—The attainment of steady-state plasma concentrations takes up to 24 hours, and there is a great deal of variability in the final concentrations reached in different individuals. In this study, the 100 μg/hour patches did not provide statistically increased plasma concentrations when compared with the 50 μg/hour patches. Clinical Relevance—Because of the interindividual and intraindividual variation in plasma fentanyl concentrations, patches should be applied 24 hours before the anticipated time that analgesia will be required. Adequacy of analgesia and potentially deleterious side effects, such as sedation and respiratory depression, should be monitored while the patches are in place. Skin reactions may occur, and the patches should be removed if such skin irritation is seen. After the patch is removed, it is expected that analgesia will wane rapidly because of the brief elimination half-life.  相似文献

Abstract Wound models attempt to simulate the natural healing processes in wounds. However, all models have significant limitations due to the complexity of the tissue repair process. Much can be learned from wound models in vitro by the use of cell culture techniques. The horse can provide a suitable naturally occurring model of chronic wound healing because it has many similarities to wound healing encountered in human medicine. The tissue architecture was investigated with regard to extracellular matrix and growth factor distribution during wound healing and growth factors were consistently present in the wound area. Biochemical investigations revealed increased levels of hydroxyproline, collagen, and TGFβ1 in exuberant granulation tissue. Equine wound models were established in vitro using cell culture techniques and growth factors had significant effects on the growth of the cells and their ability to synthesize collagen. Two gelatinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9) were detected in the tissues and wound fluid samples investigated. Zusammenfassung Wundmodelle haben zum Ziel, die natürlichen Heilungsprozesse in Wunden zu simulieren. Allen Modellen sind durch den komplexen Gewebsheilungsprozess deutliche Grenzen gesetzt. Durch die Verwendung von Zellkulturtechniken kann von Wundmodellen in vitro viel abgeleitet werden. Das Pferd stellt wegen der vielen Ähnlichkeiten zur humanmedizinischen Wundheilung ein geeignetes Modell für chronische Wundheilung dar. Die Gewebsarchitektur wurde bezüglich der Verteilung von extrazellulärer Matrix und von Wachtumsfaktoren während der Wundheilung untersucht; Wachtsumsfaktoren waren ständig in der Wunde vorhanden. Biochemische Untersuchungen ergaben erhöhte Hydroxyprolin-, Kollagenund TGFβ1-Spiegel. Wundmodelle beim Pferd in vitro und Zellkulturtechniken wurden entwickelt; Wachstumsfaktoren hatten deutliche Wirkung auf die Zellen und ihre Fahigkeit zur Kollagensynthese. Sin embargo, todos 10s modelos presentan limitaciones considerables debido a la complejidad del proceso de curación de heridas. Se puede aprender mucho de modelos de heridas in vitro mediante el uso de técnicas de cultivo celular. El caballo puede suponer un modelo natural adecuado de curación crónica de heridas ya que se asemeja a la curación de heridas en medicina humana. Se investigó la arquitectura tisular en referencia a la matriz extracelular y la distribución de factores de crecimento viendo que los factores de crecimiento se encontraban presentes de forma constante en el área de la herida. Las investigaciones bioquímicas revelaron incremento en los niveles de hidroxiprolina, colágeno y TGFbl en tejido de granulación exhuberante. Se establecieron modelos in vitro de heridas equinas utilizando técnicas de cultivo celular y los factores de crecimiento tuvieron efectos significativos en el crecimiento de las células y su capacidad de sintetizar colágeno. Cependant tous les modèles ont des limitations significatives dues à la complexité des processus de réparation des tissus. Beaucoup peut être étudié sur des modèles de plaies in vitro suite à l'utilisation des techniques de culture cellulaire. Le cheval peut constituer un modèle nature1 fiable de cicatrisation chronique de plaie de par les nombreuses similarités qu'il partage avec la cicatrisation des plaies en médecine humaine. L'architecture tissulaire a étéétudiée concernant la matrice extracellulaire et la distribution des facteurs de croissance pendant la cicatrisation, et les facteurs de croissance se sont montrés présents de façon consistante dans la zone de la plaie. Des investigations biochimiques ont révélé une élévation des taux d'hydroxyproline, collagène, et TGFβ1 dans la granulation tissulaire exubérante. Des modèles équins de plaies ont étéétablis in vivo en utilisant des techniques de culture cellulaire et les facteurs de croissance ont montré des effets significatifs sur la croissance des cellules et leur capacité de synthétiser le collagène. Abstract Using the technique of human basophil passive sensitization, as employed for human allergy díagnosis, we checked the ability of canine anaphylactic antibodies to sensitize human basophils. Therefore, by sensitizing human basophils with sera taken from dogs allergic to house dust mite, we demonstrated basophil activation as measured by alcian blue staining. Basophil activation was inhibited by heating dog sera at 56 °C for 6 h and by a human myeloma IgE. Basophil activation was also shown by histamine and leukotriene (LTC4) release. These results indicate canine anaphylactic antibodies bind to human basophil IgE receptors and also that they are IgE. The three methods described here for measuring basophil activation may lead to díagnostic methods applicable to canine allergy díagnosis. Resumen Mediante el método de la sensibilización pasiva de basófilos humanos como se utiliza para el díagnóstico de la alergia humana, evaluamos la capacidad de los anticuerpos anafilácticos caninos de sensibilizar basófilos humanos. Asi, sensibilizando basófilos humanos con suero extraido de perros con alergia al ácaro del polvo, demostramos la activación de basófilos medíante la tinción de Azul de Alcián. Se inhibió calentando suero canino a 56 °C durante 6 h. y por IgE de mieloma humano. La activación de los basófilos se mostró también por la liberación de histamina y leucotrieno (LTC4). Estos resultados indican que los anticuerpos caninos anafilácticos se unen a los receptores de IgE en basófilos humanos y también que son IgE. Ainsi, par sensibilisation de basophiles humains avec des sérums provenant de chiens allergiques aux acariens de la poussière de maison, nous avons démontré l'activation des basophiles mesurée par coloration au bleu alcian. Celle-ci est inhibée par des sérums canins chauffés à 56 °C pendant 6 heures et par un myélome IgE humain. L'activation des basophiles a été aussi démontrée par libération d'histamine et de leucotriénes (LTC4). Veterinary Dermatology 1996; 7 : 185–91.] Zusammenfassung Mit der Technik der passiven Basophilensensibilisierung beim Menschen, wie man sie für die Allergiedíagnose beim Menschen anwendet, untersuchten wir die Möglichkeit, menschliche Basophile durch kanine anaphylaktische Antikörper zu sensibilisieren. Dazu wurden humane Basophile mit Sera von Hunden sensibilisiert, die allergisch auf Hausstaubmilben reagierten. Dabei demonstrierten wir eine Basophilenaktivierung, die durch Elsässerblau-Färbung gemessen werden konnte. Der Vorgang wurde verhindert durch Erhitzen der Hundesera auf 56 °C für 6 Stunden und durch humanes Myelom-IgE. Basophilenaktivierung wurde auch durch Histamin-und Leukotrien(LTC4)-Ausschüttung gezeigt. Diese Ergebnisse zeigen, daß kanine anaphylaktische Antikörper sich an humane basophile IgE-Rezeptoren binden und auch IgEs darstellen. Die drei hier beschriebenen Methoden zur Messung der Basophilenaktivierung können zu einer díagnostischen Methode führen, die für die Diagnostik kaniner Allergie anwendbar ist. The reparative ability of equine synovium was determined by gross, histological, and ultrastructural examination. The functional potential of the synovium was estimated by examination of synovial cell organelles with transmission electron microscopy. Results from rested and exercised horses were compared to determine the effect of exercise on synovial healing. The response of the synovectomized joint to exercise was evaluated with a standardized lameness examination and by gross, histological, and histochemical observations of the articular cartilage. A 7-mm diameter motorized synovial resector was used to perform a subtotal synovectomy in 1 antebrachiocarpal joint of each of 8 horses; the contralateral joint served as a control. After 2 months rest, four randomly selected horses were rigorously exercised for the remainder of the study; the other four horses continued paddock rest. Lameness examinations and synovial fluid analyses were conducted at 0, 2, 30, 60, and 120 days. Synovium and articular cartilage from all horses were examined at necropsy at 120 days. None of the horses were lame during the study, and a transient synovitis occurred in the synovectomized joints. The hyaluronan concentration of treated joints decreased at 2 days but returned to normal by 60 days. Synovial fluid composition, including hyaluronan concentration, was unchanged by exercise. Significant cartilage damage was not observed in any of the joints. At 120 days, the healing synovium was devoid of villi and its subintima was fibrotic, however transmission electron microscopy confirmed that an intimal layer was present within the repair tissue. The cells within the repair tissue appeared actively engaged in both synthesis and phagocytosis. Exercise did not modify any of these findings. The results of this study suggest that 120 days after subtotal synovectomy, the joint environment was maintained and the resected synovium had evidence of restoration and increased metabolic potential. Synovectomized joints withstood exercise but synovial repair was not accelerated by exercise.  相似文献

The radiological changes observed in 100 dogs with confirmed intra-nasal disease are reviewed with particular reference to the differential features of neoplasia, destructive rhinitis and proliferative inflammatory conditions. The clinical features, sites of origin and radiological changes in 34 dogs with 38 histologically proven non-osteogenic malignant tumours of the appendicular skeleton are reported. The incidence of such tumours when compared with the number of osteosarcomas recorded during the same period is much higher than in previously reported series. A wide variety of tumour types was recorded, fibrosarcomas (nine cases), metastatic deposits (eight cases) and haemangiosarcomas (five cases) being the most common. No distinctive features could be related to histological type, but only one tumour in this group demonstrated radiological signs indistinguishable from those previously classified as characteristic of osteosarcoma (Gibbs, Denny & Kelly, 1984). Lung metastases were detected radiographically in approximately 15 per cent of cases. Of eight dogs treated, either by amputation or surgical excision, three are known to have survived without recurrence for more than two years.  相似文献
