Ultrasonography and MRI have become valuable tools for imaging of tendon injuries. The current study examines the histopathologic basis for the imaging abnormalities. Five injured equine forelimbs and two normal contralateral limbs were studied with high resolution real time ultrasound and MRI. Histologic sections were made and correlated with the diagnostic images. All lesions were readily seen by both modalities. Lesions characterized by hemorrhage, edma, and cellular infiltration were sonolucent on ultrasound and bright on MRI images. MRI returned to normal as fibrogenesis ensued. Ultrasound images remained abnormal until fibrillar reallgnment occured with completion of the healing process. High resolution real time ultrasound and MRI both accurately reflect the tissue abnormalities in acute tendon injuries. The injured horse does appear to be an effective model for correlative imaging studies of tendon injuries.  相似文献

The discovery of transgenes in maize landraces in Mexico, a center of diversity for this crop, raises questions about the potential impact of transgene diffusion on maize diversity. The concept of diversity and farmers’ role in maintaining diversity is quite complex. Farmers’ behavior is expected to have a significant influence on causing transgenes to diffuse, to be expressed differently, and to accumulate within landraces. Farmers’ or consumers’ perceptions that transgenes are “contaminants” and that landraces containing transgenes are “contaminated” could cause these landraces to be rejected and trigger a direct loss of diversity. On-farm conservation is recognized as a key component of a comprehensive strategy to conserve crop genetic resources. A fundamental problem faced by any on-farm conservation project is the identification of crop populations on which efforts should be focused. This paper describes a method to identify a subset of landraces for further conservation efforts from a larger collection representing the diversity found in the Central Valleys of Oaxaca, Mexico. Mexico is a center of origin and diversity for maize (Zea mays L.). The 17 landraces selected from an initial collection of 152 satisfy two criteria. First, they represent the diversity present in the larger collection. Second, they appear to serve the interests of farmers in the region. Data for applying the method were elicited through participatory as well as conventional techniques. They incorporate the complementary perspectives of both men and women members of farm households, and of plant breeders and social scientists.  相似文献

Foreign bodies in the soft tissues are frequent problems in both veterinary and human medical practice. Radiography has been the principle tool for diagnosis, but is unable to define many foreign bodies. This study was undertaken to compare the sonographic and radiographic visualization for a variety of foreign bodies. Fresh turkey muscle (pectoral and thigh) with skin was used as the soft tissue model. Assorted foreign bodies were introduced 1 cm into the muscle. Materials examined were small wood fragments, steel wire, glass, nails, graphite, rock, BB pellets, and polystyrene plastic. Following introduction of the foreign bodies radiographs were obtained and the specimens were studied sonographically at 5.0 mHz and 7.5 mHz. All foreign bodies were visible with sonography. A bright echo with either acoustic shadowing or reverberations was present for all specimens. Radiographically metallic foreign bodies were visible but wood, some graphite, and plastic were not seen. We conclude that radiography should remain the primary imaging modality for foreign body detection because of its general availability and low cost. If radiography is negative ultrasound can detect and guide the removal of radiolucent foreign bodies.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to analyze the impact of a set of interventions related to on-farm/in situ conservation and use of fruit species (cultivated and wild) on farmers’ livelihoods and species diversity in Central Asia. Specifically, a difference-in-differences propensity score matching is used to evaluate the outcome of a development research program in Uzbekistan between 2005 and 2010. Species crop diversity maintained by farmers before and after the project increased as a result of the interventions, showing the efficacy of the interventions promoted by the projects in terms of conservation. Furthermore, innovations provided by the program increased both household propensity of marketing and self-consumption of target fruit. However, the program’s interventions did not seem to impact significantly any of the indicators related to household livelihoods. The short time elapsed between the end of the project and the impact assessment may be too brief to capture any observable impact on livelihoods.  相似文献

Epistics is a model combining a biophysical and a decisional model designed to generate irrigation and N fertilisation schedules in apple orchards. These techniques were chosen since they are key elements in the management of fruit tree cropping systems. The biophysical model representing water and N dynamics in orchards was based on the water and N dynamics of Stics and was completed using a crop water and N requirement estimation method adapted to orchards. It was linked to an agronomic decision rule in a combined model able to generate N fertilisation and irrigation schedules. The Epistics evaluation process dealt with numerical evaluation of state variables (water and N soil content) and qualitative evaluation of model-generated schedules. The numerical evaluation, which concerned the biophysical model of Epistics, was performed on the basis of (i) soil nitrate and water content at the end of winters 2002 and 2003, and on (ii) nitrate and water dynamics during spring and summer 2003. The mean Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) between observed and simulated values at the end of winter was 3.3% water per horizon and 56 kg N/ha, which is relatively good owing to the high spatial and temporal variability of soil water and nitrate content. The qualitative evaluation of generated schedules was performed during interviews with farmers. Farmers were asked to evaluate the model with reference to their own practices. A sharp difference between farmers and the model concerned the beginning of the irrigation period. This suggested that the model should take into account the constraints imposed by scab and codling moth control practices and irrigation rounds. The difference between model-generated and farmers’ fertilisation practices suggested that the model may take plot vigour into account in the fertilisation decision rule. Such a study is a first step towards the design of models linking sound agronomic decision rules to crop modelling and representing interactions between practices.  相似文献

Aphid populations, including a widespread pest, Myzus persicae, are known to be affected by cultural practices, plant growth and natural regulation, but their control in orchards most frequently relies on regular treatments aiming to avoid direct damage and virus transmission. This study aimed first at characterising farmers’ management strategies towards aphids and, secondly evaluating them in terms of efficiency and impact on aphid natural enemies. Protection methods were first identified through semi-open interviews and peach orchard pesticide records from 19 organic and conventional fruit farms in south-eastern France. It appeared that in addition to the regular use of direct control, farmers also used cultural and/or alternative methods and various decision-making indicators to optimise their orchard crop protection. Comprehensive variables based on the technical guidelines of the IOBC (International Organisation for Biological and Integrated Control) for crop protection made it possible to differentiate four strategies: intensive, optimised, input-substitution and integrated. Visual monitoring of aphid infestations and of beneficial populations was performed at the plot level. Brachycaudus schwartzi and Myzus varians were the most frequently encountered aphid species but the structures of the communities were affected by protection strategies: the more integrated the strategy, the more diverse and abundant the aphids. The two most effective strategies were dominated by chemical treatments, whereas the other two, less detrimental to aphid antagonists, were mostly carried out by organic farmers. Variations in aphid communities were related to: (i) the use of toxic products, correlated with low-infestations and low-abundance and diversity of antagonists; (ii) alternative and cultural methods (such as mowed ground cover and manual pruning of infested branches, respectively) that promoted high populations of both guilds. Unexpectedly, the structures of these communities were not related to the number of treatments, management of tree vigour or of the surrounding environment. The four strategies identified can be further interpreted as steps towards a redesign of orchard protection where integrated organic farming would be the most advanced stage. However, the paradox between effective protection strategy and biodiversity conservation still remains, casting doubts on the agroecological concept of sustainability.  相似文献

A study was made of the influence of substrate on the root releases of hydrogen ions (H+) and bicarbonate ions (HCO3 ) by corn (Zea mays, cv.Dea) grown between the 5/6 leaf and the 9/10 leaf stage in two different growth media, siliceous or calcareous sand. Different nutrient solutions were supplied in separate experiments, but in all cases, nitrogen was in the form of nitrate (NOg"), and iron chelates were present in solution.

In siliceous sand the pH generally increased, but acidification appeared with low NO3 nutrition. Roots released H+ and HCO3 simultaneously, and these ions partially reacted to form H2CO3. The pH variations depended on the balance of the released ions and on the low buffer capacity in this slightly acidic pH range. The algebraic sum of the ion effluxes was approximately equal to the sum of the ion uptakes; no stoichiometric coupling between the total H+ effluxes and the NO3 or potassium (K+) uptakes was recorded.

In calcareous sand HCO3 was released by the roots, but the H+ seedling effluxes always acidified the solutions with regard to the reference solutions in calcareous sand without plants. Even though HCO3 was released in great quantities by plants, the pH of the solutions did not become alkaline because of the high buffer capacity of the solution in contact with the calcareous medium. In this environment the plants reacted to the high levels of HCO3 and showed symptoms of lime‐induced chlorosis. To overcome the poor physicochemical conditions, H+ was released from the corn roots, and this H+ efflux was correlated to the total alkalinity of the solution.  相似文献

This paper describes the current state of international plant breeding research and explains why the centralized global approach to germplasm improvement that was so successful in the past is today being transformed by the incorporation of decentralized local breeding methods designed to better incorporate the perspective of end users into the varietal development process. It describes international breeding efforts for major crops and identifies factors that have contributed to the success of the international breeding system; discusses shortcomings of the global approach to plant breeding and explains why future successes will depend critically on researchers' ability to incorporate the knowledge and preferences of technology users; reviews a number of farmer participatory research methods that are currently being tested by plant breeding programs throughout the developing world; describes synergies that can potentially be achieved by linking centralized global and decentralized local breeding models; and discusses technical, economic, and institutional challenges that will have to be overcome to integrate end user-based participatory approaches into the international plant breeding system. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
