The free‐living soil nematode Panagrellus redivivus is well known to be an excellent food source for first feeding fish larvae. It represents an alternative to the highly expensive Artemia, which is commonly used. The lack of a proper method for mass production of P. redivivus has prevented its wider use in commercial hatcheries. A new cultivation method allows the production of a sufficient quantity of nematodes to deliver a standardized and permanently available live food of high quality, throughout the larval rearing period. In two experiments – carried out at the Centro de Investigación en Alimentación y Desarrollo, Mexico – several feeding regimes were established to prove the quality of the mass produced P. redivivus for larvae of Litopenaeus vannamei, the Pacific white shrimp. Two different nematode treatments were compared with a no‐feed group and a control group that was fed with Artemia. All treatments had an additional algal co‐feed and were run in five replicates. Panagrellus redivivus was cultured on two different media (wheat/corn flour and oat flour) to compare these for their suitability as high‐quality live food for the larvae. Shrimp fed nematodes grown on wheat/corn medium reached the postlarval stage earlier than those from other treatments. The nematode treatments showed promising results; however, further research is needed on the development of improved culture media or enrichment methods to further increase the nutritional value of P. redivivus.  相似文献

This study investigated the influence of different dietary protein/carbohydrate ratios on activities of enzymes involved in the amino acid metabolism as well as on growth performance and body composition of Nile tilapia (Oreo- chromis niloticus). Fish were fed semi-synthetic diets differing in their protein/carbohydrate ratio. The diets were formulated to be isolipidic and isoenergetic (on the basis of metabolizable energy). Fish were reared individually. After a prefeeding phase, tilapia were randomly assigned to three groups and were fed the experimental diets at a relatively low level. The study lasted 9 weeks. Proximate composition, gross energy content, and activities of aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT) and alanine aminotransferase (ALAT) in the liver of fish were determined. While the mean growth rate and feed conversion efficiency did not differ significantly among the feeding groups, the body composition showed significant differences. The dietary protein/carbohydrate ratio had no significant effect on the protein and energy gain, but the lipid gain was significantly higher in tilapia fed the low-protein diet. The activities of ASAT and ALAT per gram of liver and per gram of soluble protein were significantly increased in fish fed the high-protein diet. There was a significant positive correlation between the activities of ASAT and ALAT. The activities of both enzymes in the liver were significantly higher in fish with a higher protein gain. Measuring the activities of enzymes involved in the amino acid metabolism can provide more information about the metabolic utilized dietary protein.  相似文献

The free-living nematode Panagrellus redivivus is a potential source of live food for first feeding fish. The digestion and assimilation of nematodes by larval fish were investigated with the aid of a histological and stable isotope approach. Larvae of whitefish Coregonus lavaretus were reared for 8 d with nematodes and compared with an unfed control. Nematodes were readily ingested by 3-d-old larvae. Different stages of nematode digestion could be observed in transverse sections of fish larvae sampled on Day 6 at regular intervals after feeding. Nematodes were produced on corn medium. In this way nematodes with a stable carbon isotope signature clearly different from the isotopic pattern of the fish larvae could be obtained. Stable carbon isotope signatures for lipids and lipid-free matter of fish larvae sampled on Days 2 and 8 after first feeding were clearly influenced by the stable isotopic pattern of the nematodes. The high acceptance of the nematodes by Coregonus lavaretus larvae and the early onset of digestion and nutrient retention positively confirm the potential of PanagreUus redivivus as a live food for first feeding fish larvae.  相似文献

The nematode Panagrellus redivivus (Linné) has been suggested as a source of live food in the rearing of larval fish and shrimp species. This study tested the use of P. redivivus in the early rearing of the bottom‐feeding catfish Synodontis petricola (Matthes). A comparison of feeding rates of 5000–10 000 nematodes larva−1 day−1 showed that fish receiving 5000 nematodes larva−1 day−1 grew faster than those fed a dry diet, but slower than treatments fed 200 and 600 Artemia larva−1 day−1. Enrichment of nematodes with SuperSelco® improved fish growth relative to a non‐enriched control treatment, with both treatments receiving 5000 nematodes larva−1 day−1. In the first two trials, feeding commenced 2 days after hatching. In the third study, fish were fed nematodes 6 days after hatching and there was no difference in growth between Artemia‐fed fish (600 Artemia larva−1 day−1) and fish fed 5000 nematodes larva−1 day−1. Thus, it is suggested to feed S. petricola at a nematode density of at least 10 000nematodes larva−1 day−1 in order to achieve growth comparable to that of fish fed Artemia, or, alternatively, to feed 5000 nematodes larva−1 day−1 to improve growth relative to that achieved with a dry diet. Furthermore, nematodes may be enriched with essential fatty acids to improve the growth of S. petricola larvae.  相似文献

The free‐living nematode Panagrellus redivivus was mass produced on a solid culture medium enriched with sunflower oil or fish oil by means of a new technology. Nematodes with different fatty acid compositions were obtained. A 7‐day experiment was performed in order to compare the lipid enriched nematodes with Artemia as live food for first feeding common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) larvae. Larvae fed nematodes doubled their body mass and had a mean survival rate higher than 80%. No significant differences could be observed between the two groups fed nematodes. Fish larvae fed with Artemia showed almost no mortality and had a final body mass five times higher than larvae fed nematodes. It is concluded that mass produced nematodes are a promising food source for first feeding common carp larvae. However, further research is needed on the development of improved culture media to increase the nutritional value of P. redivivus.  相似文献

An 8‐week feeding trial was conducted using tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus L., in a recirculation system maintained at 27±0.2°C to observe the negative effects of Sesbania endosperm on growth and nutrient utilization. Five experimental diets were formulated to contain 32% protein, of which fishmeal was the major source. Endosperm separated from Sesbania seeds was included at levels of 0.0%, 2.9%, 5.8%, 8.7% and 11.6% in diets 1 (control), 2, 3, 4 and 5, respectively, equivalent to levels of 0.0%, 9.7%, 19.4%, 29.1% and 38.8%, respectively, of whole Sesbania seeds. Each treatment had two replicates, eight fish per replicate, with a mean initial live weight of 5.2±0.1 g. Fish were fed 20 g per kg metabolic body weight of fish daily. The body weight gain, metabolic growth rate, feed conversion ratio, protein efficiency ratio, protein productive value and energy retention of fish fed the control and diet 2 were significantly better (P<0.05) than those of fish fed the other diets. Physical observation showed that the intestines of the fish fed diets that included endosperm contained loose, viscous and sticky material. Fish fed diets 3, 4 and 5 had a lower proportion of dry matter in their faeces, and lower apparent crude lipid and energy digestibility coefficients compared with fish fed the control diet and diet 2. They also had significantly reduced levels of muscle and plasma cholesterol, whole‐body crude protein, lipid and gross energy.  相似文献

A 10‐week feeding experiment was conducted in a respirometric system to evaluate the suitability of red alga Nori (Porphyra yezoensis) as a partial replacement for fish meal in intensively fed Nile tilapia. Diets were formulated to be iso‐nitrogenous and iso‐energetic and to replace 0%, 15% and 30% fish meal with Nori, Pyezoensis. No statistically significant differences in growth or feed utilization between the control diet and either Nori diet were found. Tilapia fed on Nori 15 increased their body mass by 415%, those fed the control diet by 341% and fish fed Nori 30 by 317% over the experimental period. Nori 15 fed fish showed the best feed utilization, highest metabolic growth rate and significantly lower oxygen consumption rates than the control. Both Nori supplemented groups (Nori 15: 4.1 g O2 g?1 protein gain and Nori 30: 3.9 g O2 g?1 protein gain) used less oxygen per gram of protein gain compared to fish fed the control diet (5.4 g O2 g?1 protein gain). Our results show that a low replacement level (15%) of fish meal with Nori improves growth and feed utilization while oxygen consumption and amount of oxygen consumed per gram protein gain are significantly decreased.  相似文献

The increasing need for aquafeed resources and the finite availability of conventional feed resources are making it necessary to search for alternative high‐protein resources that are not used as human food. The earthworm Perionyx excavatus was tested as a feed ingredient in diets for common carp. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the potential of earthworm powder as a replacement for fishmeal. In a recirculation aquarium system, triplicate groups of five common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) were fed a control feed (fishmeal based protein), or experimental diets in which 30% (EW30), 70% (EW70), or 100% (EW100) of fishmeal protein was replaced by earthworm protein. Fish growth, feed digestibility and feed utilization were monitored. Growth rate, protein efficiency and energy retention in fish were similar (EW30, EW100) or higher (EW70) for diets containing earthworm meal compared to the control diet. Protein digestibility in EW30, EW70 and EW100 was higher than in the control diet, but in (EW100), lipid conversion was lower. We conclude that earthworm is a suitable partial replacement for fishmeal in feeds for common carp.  相似文献
