Effect of rain on absorption after transdermal application of flunixin in calves

Flunixin is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that has anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic, and analgesic effects. Recently, a novel transdermal formulation was developed (Finadyne^® Transdermal, MSD Animal Health) and is now the first NSAID registered to be administered as a pour-on product in cattle. According to the manufacturer's instructions, the pour-on product should be applied only to dry skin and exposure to rain should be avoided for at least 6 hr after application. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of simulated exposure to light or heavy rain on flunixin absorption and bioavailability within the first 4 hr after administration. Therefore, an isocratic HPLC method was developed to quantify flunixin concentrations in bovine serum by UV detection. Light rain decreased flunixin absorption only when rain started immediately after flunixin administration, while light rain starting more than 30 min after administration of flunixin had no effect on absorption. Absorption and bioavailability of flunixin was impacted under simulated heavy rain conditions, when exposure to rain occurred within one hour after the application of the pour-on formulation, but not later.     

Ethnobotany of medicinal plants from Dibru-Saikhowa Biosphere Reserve of Northeast India

A survey of medicinal plants used by the ethnic communities of Dibru-Saikhowa Biosphere Reserve in Northeast India has been reported. Fifty-five plant species belonging to 34 families and 52 different genera were included. For each plant species, botanical name, vernacular name, part(s) used, popular medicinal use, forms of preparation and applications of the herbal remedies are provided.     

Captive Breeding of Endangered Ompok pabda with Ovatide

The Pabdah catfish, Ompok pabda, was successfully spawned with the synthetic hormone Ovatide at two different doses (0.4 and 0.6 ml/kg of body weight of female). The latency period was 9–10 h at 0.6 ml compared to 10–12 h at 0.4 ml kg^?1 of body weight. All the females spawned successfully. Average rate of fertilization (75.5 %) and hatching (60.5%) was higher with a dose of 0.6 ml kg^?1, while lower fertilization (65.1%) and hatching rate (45%) were observed at 0.3 ml kg^?1 of body weight. Fecundity ranged from 80–130 eggs gm^?1 body weight of female. Eggs hatched between 12–14 h after spawning at a water temperature 28°–32°C. The mean egg diameter was 0.95 ± 0.15 mm.     

Characterization of Macrophomina phaseolina, the charcoal rot pathogen of cluster bean, using conventional techniques and PCR-based molecular markers

Phenotypic and genetic diversity of 59 Macrophomina phaseolina isolates collected from various host species growing in or near cluster bean ( Cyamopsis tetragonoloba ) fields in four states of north and north-west India were characterized using RAPD and PCR–RFLPs of the ITS region. These isolates, and 11 from various hosts from culture collections, were classified into three mycelial phenotypes: dense, feathery and restricted, based on variable growth patterns on nutrient agar containing 120 m m chlorate. Pathogenicity of isolates was evaluated by measuring the length of stem lesions 21 days post-inoculation on the susceptible cluster bean genotype FS 277. Isolates showed considerable variation in aggressiveness, with the isolates from cluster bean with dense chlorate phenotype producing relatively higher lesion lengths on cluster bean plants. The results of the RAPD assay clearly distinguished the isolates on the basis of chlorate phenotype and host origin. Isolates from a single host were generally similar to each other, but differed distinctly from those from other hosts. Chlorate-sensitive isolates were distinct from chlorate-resistant isolates within a given host. A high degree of polymorphism in restriction patterns of the ITS region, including part of 25S rDNA, has been reported for the first time in the charcoal rot fungus.
