The growth pattern of 20 cultivars of pineapple (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.), with particular reference to propagules differentiation, was studied under uniform, natural conditions over a period of 3 years. The propagules, depending on cultivar, were “suckers” (arising from below the soil, rooted), “shoots” (arising between the leaves), “hapas” (arising from the peduncle-base) and “slips” (arising at the base of the fruits). A few cultivars produced no slips or only a limited number of slips. In addition to the normal adaxial slips, abaxial slips were sometimes formed. “Crown slips” (arising at the top of the fruit) were occasionally encountered. Regular hapas production was confined to 2 cultivars. Marked variation existed in the pattern of shoot formation. Whereas in the majority of plants, shoots were found at regular intervals along the stem, in 2 cultivars the shoots grew as whorls at the base of the stem. Suckers were produced by all cultivars, with one prominent exception. The crown was most often single, but occasionally multiple and fasciated. Whereas bolting almost invariably preceded inflorescence emergence, in a few cases bolting was not followed by flower formation. The inflorescences of 2 cultivars constituted an exception in not having normal types of pigmentation. There were cultivar differences in the number of florets in an inflorescence. Many of the cultivars showed a distinct tendency for photoperiodic sensitivity.  相似文献

In plant–pathogen interactions, strong structural and biochemical barriers may induce a cascade of reactions in planta, leading to host resistance. The kinetic speed and amplitudes of these defence mechanisms may discriminate resistance from susceptibility to necrotrophic fungi. The infection processes of two Ascochyta lentis isolates (FT13037 and F13082) on the recently identified ascochyta blight (AB)‐resistant Lens orientalis genotype ILWL180 and two cultivated genotypes, ILL7537 (resistant) and ILL6002 (susceptible), were assessed. Using histopathological methods, significant differences in early behaviour of the isolates and the subsequent differential defence responses of the hosts were revealed. Irrespective of virulence, both isolates had significantly lower germination, shorter germ tubes and delayed appressorium formation on the resistant genotypes (ILWL180 and ILL7537) compared to the susceptible genotype (ILL6002); furthermore, these were more pronounced on genotype ILWL180 than on genotype ILL7537. Subsequently, host perception of pathogen entry led to the faster accumulation and notably higher amounts of reactive oxygen species and phenolic compounds at the penetration sites of the resistance genotypes ILWL180 and ILL7537. In contrast, genotype ILL6002 responded slowly to the A. lentis infection and reaffirmed previous gross disease symptomology reports as highly susceptible. Interestingly, quantification of H2O2 was markedly higher in ILWL180 particularly at 12 h post‐inoculation compared to ILL7537, potentially indicative of its superior resistance capability. Faster recognition of A. lentis is likely to be a major contribution to the superior resistance observed in genotype ILWL180 to the highly aggressive isolates of A. lentis assessed.  相似文献

The present study was carried out to investigate the effect of supplementation of inulin on histology, immuno‐haematological and biochemical parameters of Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) fingerlings with an initial average body weight of 7.14 ± 0.05 g. Inulin was supplemented at four different concentrations (control) 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 g/kg in the L. calcarifer diet containing 400 g/kg protein and 90 g/kg lipid. At the end of the 60 days feeding trial, the absorptive surface area of the intestine and glycogen deposition in liver were increased in fish fed inulin supplemented diets. The immune parameters lysozyme, alternative complement pathway, superoxide dismutase and nitroblue tetrazolium assay showed significant (< 0.05) difference between control and treatment groups. Haematological parameters showed that red blood cells, white blood cells, haemoglobin, packed cell volume, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration levels increased significantly (< 0.05) in the fish fed with inulin supplemented diets. The analysis of biochemical parameters revealed that glucose, urea, cholesterol, triglyceride, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, and lactate dehydrogenase showed significant differences (< 0.05) between control and treatments groups. No significant difference (> 0.05) was observed for total protein among different treatments. The results of the study revealed that 15–20 g/kg inulin supplementation has a beneficial effect in the histology, immuno‐haematological, and biochemical parameters in L. calcarifer juveniles.  相似文献

Ascochyta blight of lentil (Lens culinaris ssp. culinaris) is caused by Ascochyta lentis. The disease causes severe damage to all aerial parts of the plant and may lead to total crop loss during extremely severe epidemics. To identify qualitative differences in resistance within Australian lentil crops, variation in virulence was examined among 17 isolates of A. lentis on six differential lentil genotypes (ILL7537, ILL5588 (cv. Northfield), ILL6002, ILL5722 (cv. Digger), ILL481 (cv. Indianhead) and CIPA203 (cv. Nipper)). Six distinct virulence patterns were identified, with Pathotype I (AL4) being highly virulent, causing disease on all genotypes except ILL7537 and pathotype VI (Kewell) exhibiting low virulence on all genotypes. Histopathology studies were carried out to further understand interaction differences between isolate-host combinations and add to the knowledge of possible resistance mechanisms underlying lentil’s defence to the pathogen. The infection process was compared between lentil genotypes with different levels of resistance and isolates with different levels of virulence. Microscopic and biochemical differences were observed between compatible and incompatible interactions, which were related to time-after-inoculation, with slower responses noted in susceptible lentil genotypes. Relatively fast release of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and a subsequent hypersensitive response (HR) was central to initial defence at the point of penetration in the most resistant lentil genotypes.  相似文献

A potculture study was conducted in soils collected from long-term fertilizer experiment (LTFE) being kept up as far the past 40 years to determine whether arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) Rhizoglomus intraradices colonization changes the active and passive pools of carbon in a maize (Zea mays) – finger millet (Eleusine crocana)- cowpea (Vigna sinensis) cropping sequence in the Experimental Farm of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, India. Soil samples were processed, sterilized and maize plants were grown in various fertility gradients in the absence (M-) or presence (M+) of AMF (Rhizoglomus intraradices) inoculation. The data have clearly shown that M+ soils had consistently higher active pools such as water soluble carbon, hot water soluble carbon and biomass carbon (M- 189; M + 305 mg kg?1), and passive pools such as soil organic carbon (M- 4.17; M + 4.31 mg g?1) and total glomalin. Among the fertility gradients, 100% NPK + Farm Yard Manure (FYM) with or without mycorrhizal fungal inoculation registered higher values for both active and passive pools of C but the response was more pronounced in the presence AMF inoculation. Overall, the data suggest that mycorrhizal fungal inoculation assists in effective carbon sequestration in an intensive cereal-legume cropping system.Abbreviations: AMF: Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi; DAS: Days After Sowing; LTFE: Long-Term Fertilizer Experiment; WSC: Water soluble organic carbon; HA: Humic acid; FA: Fulvic acid; HWSC: Hot water soluble carbon  相似文献

For the development of rabbit models of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), immunoglobulin allotype-defined pedigreed rabbits from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases rabbit resource more closely approximate human populations due to their non-inbred pedigreed structure. In an initial study from this laboratory, peptides (SM and GR) from the spliceosomal Smith (Sm) and the NMDA glutamate receptor NR2b, on branched polylysine backbones (BB) elicited antinuclear and anti-dsDNA autoantibodies typical of SLE, as well as seizures and nystagmus sometimes observed as neurological manifestations in SLE patients. This suggested the feasibility of further selective breeding to develop a more reproducible rabbit model for investigations of SLE. Here we report the results of GR-MAP-8 and control BB immunization on autoantibody responses in a group of 24 rabbits specifically bred and developed from parents and ancestors tested for autoantibody responses. The changes in hematological profile and blood chemistry in the experimental rabbits were evaluated along with autoantibody responses. Elevations of total white blood cell (WBC), monocyte, eosinophil and basophil counts that developed following immunizations were moderately influenced by litter and presence of the antibody heavy chain allotype VH1a1. Autoantibody development followed a sequential pattern with anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA) followed by anti-dsDNA and subsequently anti-Sm and anti-RNP similar to SLE patients. High autoantibody levels to one autoantigen were not always associated with antibody response to another. Female rabbits had higher prevalence and levels of autoantibodies similar to human SLE. Higher autoantibody levels of anti-dsDNA and -ANA were observed among some full sibs and the presence of high responder ancestors in the pedigree was associated the augmented responses. We observed significant association between highest antibody responses to GR-MAP-8 and highest anti-dsDNA levels. Naturally occurring autoantibodies were found in some pre-immune sera and some unique ANA fluorescent staining patterns within the experimental group were observed. Background immunofluorescence in pre-immune sera, distinct patterns of programmed autoantibody responses unique among individual rabbits may have been modulated by genetic constitution, gender and environmental factors including exposure to antigens. The high incidence and intensity of autoantibody responses among descendants of high responders suggest that there may be an additive mode of inheritance with high heritability. It is conceivable that further rigorous pedigree selection for autoantibody responses could lead to development of rabbit models with spontaneous occurrence of SLE like serology and disease phenotypes.  相似文献

Microsatellite markers were used for fingerprinting of hybrids, assessing variation within parental lines and testing the genetic purity of hybrid seed lot in rice. Ten sequence tagged microsatellite sites (STMS) markers were employed for fingerprinting 11 rice hybrids and their parental lines. Nine STMS markers were found polymorphic across the hybrids and produced unique fingerprint for the 11 hybrids. A set of four markers (RM 206, RM 216, RM 258 and RM 263) differentiated all the hybrids from each other, which can be used as referral markers for unambiguous identification and protection of these hybrids. Cluster analysis based on Jaccard's similarity coefficient using UPGMA grouped the hybrids into three clusters. Within the cluster all the hybrids shared a common cytoplasmic male sterile line as female parent. The genetic similarity between the hybrids ranged from 0.33 to 0.92 with an average similarity index of 0.63. The analysis of plant-to-plant variation within the parental lines of the hybrid Pusa RH 10, using informative markers indicated residual heterozygosity at two marker loci. This highlights the importance of STMS markers in maintaining the genetic purity of the parental lines. The unique value of the restorer gene linked marker for testing the genetic purity of hybrid seeds is demonstrated for the first time.  相似文献

A feeding trial was conducted to study the effect of mannan oligosaccharide (MOS) supplementation on growth, body composition, haematology, biochemical parameters and histology of Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) fingerlings (8.13 ± 0.06 g average weight). Mannan oligosaccharide was supplemented at five different concentrations viz., 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% and 2% levels in the diet (40% protein and 9% lipid) of L. calcarifer. The results of the 60 days feeding trial showed that there was a significant (P < 0.05) increase in the final body weight, weight gain (WG), WG%, average daily gain, survival, specific growth rate, daily growth coefficient, hepatosomatic index and viscerosomatic index in the fish fed diet containing 1% MOS. Whole body composition of post‐fed animals showed non‐significant differences (P > 0.05) among the various treatment groups. The analysis of haematological parameters showed that there was no significant (P > 0.05) differences among different treatments but for the haemoglobin content which was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in the fish fed 1% MOS. Biochemical parameters revealed that glucose, urea, cholesterol and triglyceride content showed significant (P < 0.05) difference between control and MOS‐supplemented group. Histological observations of post‐fed animals revealed that MOS supplementation resulted in increased absorptive surface area of the intestine and increased glycogen deposition in liver. The result of this experiment infers that MOS supplementation has got a beneficial effect in the diet of seabass and supplementation at 1% level is optimal for improving the growth.  相似文献
