Macro‐anatomical and morphometric studies of the hindlimb of grasscutter (Thryonomys swinderianus,Temminck‐1827)

The hindlimb of the grasscutter (Thryonomys swinderianus, Temminck‐1827) was studied using 12 adult (≥6 months) rats of either sex with the mean weights of 1.42 ± 0.20 kg and 0.82 ± 0.13 kg for buck (n = 6) and doe (n = 6), respectively (p < .05). Characteristics of the bones were studied by gross observation after their preparation. Measurements of different segments of the hindlimb were also taken, giving a total average length of 31.80 cm. Correlation coefficients between length of bone and weight of rats were positive (p < .05) in bucks for all bone segments, except the pes (p > .05), whereas those in does were all non‐significant (p > .05), with significant sexual dimorphism in the relationships. The average total number of bones in the hindlimb was 92, with no apparent sexual dimorphism. The bones of the hindlimb revealed important differences and similarities in morphology with those of other rodents. The Os coxae presented a relatively large obturator foramen, formed by the ramus of the ischium and shaft of the pubis. The femur had a body and two extremities with a prominent head, well‐defined neck and trochanter. The fibula, a slender bone with triangular‐shaped proximal extremity, ran down the length of tibia with proximal attachment (via cartilage) and distal fusion, leaving an extensive interosseus space. The pes revealed eight tarsals and four metatarsals; each of the metatarsals showed three phalanges.     

Biochemical characterization of staphylococci isolated from goats

Caprine strains of staphylococci show strong and early results in carbohydrate fermentation tests. Their ability to produce DNase and acetoin is weak but they possess a reasonably high degree of phosphatase activity. All the 82 isolates of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from clinically healthy and sick goats produced acid from D-(+)-glucose aerobically at 37 degrees C within 24 h, 98.8% fermented both D-mannitol and maltose, 98.7% fermented sucrose, and 81.7% fermented D-(+)-xylose with acid production, but none fermented L-sorbose. Of the ten coagulase-negative staphylococci characterized to be of animal origin, three produced DNase, but none fermented dulcitol and L-sorbose. All fermented D-(+)-glucose, maltose and D-mannitol, eight fermented D-(+)-xylose and D-sorbitol with acid production. Whilst other coagulase-positive and coagulase-negative staphylococci showed different antibiotic susceptibility patterns, the ten coagulase-negative staphylococci characterized to be of animal origin showed similar antibiotic susceptibility patterns.     

Evaluating a group-based intervention to improve the safety of meat in Bodija Market,Ibadan, Nigeria

We evaluated a group-based, participatory training intervention to improve food safety among meat processors and retailers in Bodija Market, Ibadan, Nigeria. An interactive training workshop was held for Butchers Associations’ representatives who were selected to pass on information and training to their group. Meat hygiene knowledge, attitude and practice was assessed before attending the workshop and afterwards (n = 63). It was also assessed for those who did not attend the workshop (n = 68) but were intended recipients of training through their association. Microbiological quality of meat was assessed before and after the workshop (n = 400 samples). After the workshop, participants significantly improved knowledge, attitude and practice in key food safety aspects; specifically, understanding sources of contamination and food-borne diseases, use of bleach and disinfectant and hand washing. Participants also shared information with an average of 18 other group members and improvements were seen in group members who did not attend the workshop but received training through their Butchers Association. Microbiological quality of meat sold also significantly improved after the intervention. In conclusion, participatory, group-based methods targeted at meat processors and retailers can improve meat hygiene knowledge, attitude and practice as well as the microbiological quality and hence safety of meat.

     

The Effect of Poultry Manure and P Fertilizer on Some Phosphorus Fractions in Some Soils of Southwestern Nigeria: An Incubation Study

An incubation experiment was conducted in the laboratory for 10 weeks to study the changes in some phosphorus (P) fractions in two soil series. Poultry manure was applied at 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 t ha^?1 solely and in combination with single superphosphate (SSP) at 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 kg P ha^?1. Significant increases in all the P fractions were observed to the 6th week of incubation (WAI). Sole application of poultry manure was, however, effective in reducing P occlusion in the two soil series used. An increase in Fe–P which was the largest extractable inorganic P was observed with the application of 10 t ha^?1 of poultry manure and 30 kg P ha^?1 of SSP in the Iwo series and combination of 20 t ha^?1 of poultry manure and 45 kg P ha^?1 of SSP in the Alagba series.     

Physical,Chemical and Biological Properties of an Accelerated Cassava Based Compost Prepared Using Different Ratios of Cassava Peels and Poultry Manure

Monitoring the physical, chemical and biological properties during accelerated composting enables concise determination of its stability and maturity. Determination of physical parameters such as pH, moisture and temperature, chemical parameters such as total nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), organic matter and humic acid as well as biological parameters such as microbial count and carbon dioxide (CO₂) evolution was carried out during a four (4) week composting period, The trend observed for pH showed the mesophilic and thermophilic phases and a similar trend was observed for the compost temperature. Intermittent increase and decrease was observed for total N, P, K as well as for the fungal and bacterial population. A direct relationship was observed among the bacterial population, CO₂ evolution and humic acid. However, composting for four (4) weeks produced a stable compost, which was evident through the physical observation of the final product and the results obtained for the chemical and biological parameters.     

Geographical patterns of phenotypic diversity in <Emphasis Type="Italic">Oryza sativa</Emphasis> landraces of Côte d’Ivoire

The knowledge of agro-morphological diversity and the distribution pattern of variation among conserved accessions could be an invaluable aid in germplasm management and crop improvement strategies. In this study, the geographical pattern of morphological variation of 880 landrace rice (Oryza sativa (L.)) accessions in Côte d’Ivoire was evaluated for 13 agro-morphological characters. Shannon –weaver diversity index indicated an overall mean of 0.47 ± 0.07 in the collection, with the greatest diversity from derived Savanna and north-west (H′ = 0.52 and 0.50) while the west-central had the lowest diversity (H′ = 0.41). Canonical discriminant analysis showed that traits such as panicle length, grain size (weight and length), tillering ability, number of days to heading and maturity were the main discriminatory characteristics. Result of the phenotypic frequency shows that, the landraces from the north and north-western zones were mostly tall, early heading and maturity, compared to those from the west and west-central which were mainly dwarf to medium height, late heading and maturing. This differential distribution of landraces with height, heading and maturity period reflected the distribution pattern of different Oryza sativa landraces in Côte d’Ivoire, which could be useful in germplasm management and breeding programs.     

Pathogenicity of Mycoplasma agalactiae subsp. bovis in goat mammary gland

Clinical mastitis was produced in three goats following inoculation into the mammary glands with 10⁵ colony-forming units (cfu)/ml of a local strain of Mycoplasma agalactiae subsp. bovis. The infection was characterized by pyrexia, reduction in milk yield and acute purulent inflammation of the lactiferous sinus and ducts, necrosis of the duct epithelium and by the 5th day, early proliferation of chronic inflammatory cells in the parenchyma.
