A study was conducted in a sweet pepper-maize-rice cropping system in six farmers fields in Batac, Ilocos Norte, the Philippines, to determine the optimum P fertilizer rate for sweet pepper that will benefit the succeeding crops, maximize system-level productivity and profitability, and reduce the excessive accumulation of P in the soil. Single super phosphate was applied to sweet pepper at rates of 0, 28, 56, 84, 112, and 140 kg P ha–1 and the succeeding crops were grown without P fertilization. Maize residue was incorporated into the soil at puddling of soil for rice. Phosphorus fertilization at 56 kg P ha–1 and above had a residual effect on maize and rice. A reduction in the P applied to sweet pepper from 140 to 84 kg P ha–1 reduced extractable P in the soil at rice harvest from 52 to 29 kg P ha–1. Phosphorus applied at 111 kg P ha–1 to sweet pepper was optimum for maximum productivity and economic returns of the sweet pepper-maize-rice cropping system. This rate of P also significantly reduced P accumulation in the soil, thereby reducing the chances of negative effects on soil nutrient balance/availability. The results suggested the need for a cropping systems approach to conserve and effectively use native and fertilizer P in the sweet pepper-rice cropping system.  相似文献

Areas of high conservation value were identified in the Western Ghats using a systematic conservation planning approach. Surrogates were chosen and assessed for effectiveness on the basis of spatial congruence using Pearson’s correlations and Mantel’s tests. The surrogates were, threatened and endemic plant and vertebrate species, unfragmented forest areas, dry forests, sub-regionally rare vegetation types, and a remotely sensed surrogate for unique evergreen ecosystems. At the scale of this analysis, amphibian richness was most highly correlated with overall threatened and endemic species richness, whereas mammals, especially wide-ranging species, were better at capturing overall animal and habitat diversity. There was a significant relationship between a remote sensing based habitat surrogate and endemic tree diversity and composition. None of the taxa or habitats served as a complete surrogate for the others. Sites were prioritised on the basis of their irreplaceability value using all five surrogates. Two alternative reserve networks are presented, one with minimal representation of surrogates, and the second with 3 occurrences of each species and 25% of each habitat type. These networks cover 8% and 29% of the region respectively. Seventy percent of the completely irreplaceable sites are outside the current protected area network. While the existing protected area network meets the minimal representation target for 88% of the species chosen in this study and all of the habitat surrogates, it is not representative with regard to amphibians, endemic tree species and small mammals. Much of the prioritised unprotected area is under reserve forests and can thus be incorporated into a wider network of conservation areas.  相似文献

India is the world’s tenth most forested nation with 76.87 M ha of forest and tree cover occupying 23.4% of its geographical area. Forests—with their intrinsic of carbon sequestration and storage values—are in the front line of India’s climate change mitigation strategies. This paper provides estimates of sequestered carbon in India’s forest and tree cover for the years 1995 and 2005 as per the IPCC good practice guidelines method. It is based on the primary data for the soil carbon pool through collecting soil samples by laying out quadrats across the country and secondary data for the growing stock of all forest and tree cover in the country. The estimates are compared with current and future projected emissions. It is found that conservation policies have resulted in increase of the country’s forest carbon stocks from 6244.8 to 6621.6 Mt with an annual increment of 37.7 Mt of the carbon from 1995 to 2005. Annual CO2 removal by the forests is enough to neutralise 9.3% of the country’s 2000 level emissions. Continued removals by the forest and tree cover would offset 6.5 and 4.9% of India’s projected annual emissions in 2010 and 2020 respectively. Economically, the annual value of this forest carbon in the international market is about US $188 million. The result is of use in the REDD and REDD+ context for India.  相似文献

Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) Pseudomonas lurida-NPRp15 and Pseudomonas putida-PGRs4 possessing multiple plant growth-promoting traits were isolated from rhizoplane of pea and rhizosphere of garlic, respectively. The effects of individuals and combinations of Pseudomonas spp. with effective root nodulating symbiotic nitrogen fixing Rhizobium leguminosarum-FB1 on plant growth, nutrient uptake and yield of the rajmash plant were studied under greenhouse conditions. Bacterial inoculation resulted in significantly higher values for plant dry biomass, N, P, K, Zn and Fe contents as compared to the uninoculated control. Furthermore, dual inoculation of P. lurida-NPRp15 with R. leguminosarum-FB1 significantly increased root and shoot dry weight, nodulation, nutrient uptake, pod yield, and nutrient content of pods of rajmash VL63 compared to controls, single and triple inoculation. The results of the study indicate the potential of harnessing the benefit of plant growth-promoting and nitrogen-fixing microorganisms to improve the growth and yield of rajmash.  相似文献

The economic feasibility of energy farming based on Populus × euramericana (clone I45/51) in eastern Ontario has been evaluated for two potential energy end-uses: direct combustion and methanol production. Optimal management regime and the time when energy farming should begin to be economically most desirable have been determined. Three-year rotations with 16–35 thousand stumps/ha planted and coppiced for 5–6 rotations could be an attractive enterprise in about 15 years. Farming for methanol production could be feasible only about 35 years from now.  相似文献

Echinococcosis is an important medical, veterinary and economic concern in India. Ten cysts were randomly selected from each intermediate host species (cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat and pigs). Either the germinal layer (sterile cysts) or protoscoleces (fertile cysts) were collected for molecular characterization. A 434 base pair fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase-1 gene was amplified using PCR from each isolate. Ten representative samples (2 from each intermediate host species) were sequenced in both the directions from which readable sequences were obtained from nine for phylogenetic analysis (NCBI, Blast). Phylogenetic analysis of cytochrome oxidase I gene revealed that seven (77.7%) isolates, from cattle (2), pigs (2), buffaloes (1) and goat (2) were clustered with the Indian Buffalo (G3) strain of Echinococcus granulosus, while two (22.2%) isolates from sheep were clustered with the sheep strain (G1) of E. granulosus. Phylogenetic analysis of the cytochrome oxidase-1 gene revealed that the buffalo strain (G3) and common sheep strain (G1) are cycling among livestock in north India and that these strains are highly adapted to cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats and pigs.  相似文献

Influence of NPK on performance of the stem-nodulating legumes Sesbania rostrata and Aeschynomene afraspera in lowland rice The stem-nodulating tropical legumes S. rostrata and A. afraspera are promising green manure species for the low-input rice farming systems of lowland areas. Nutrient imbalances and soils low in available nutrients can considerably affect the use of biofertilizers. Use of mineral N, P, and K fertilizers in the growth of S. rostrata and A. afraspera as biofertilizers for lowland rice in the Philippines was evaluated. Applied P and K both stimulated growth, nodulation, and N2 fixation. N accumulation in PK fertilized S. rostrata was about 40% higher than in nonfertilized green manure. Mineral N application (urea) depressed nodulation and N2 fixation (ARA) in roots and resulted in an increased ARA in stem nodules. The legumes produced more N gains in the presence of small amounts of N. Use of S. rostrata and A. afraspera green manure increased in all cases significantly rice grain yield. Thus integration of mineral N, P, and K fertilizers in a green manurebased rice farming system can considerably improve biofertilizer production and increase rice grain yield.  相似文献

Experimental exposure to Cr(VI) induced anomalies in the peripheral blood and tissues of a freshwater fish, Barbus conchonius. Clinical findings in the blood corpuscles included swelling of erythrocytes, numerous circulating polychromatophils, and vacuolation of large lymphocytes during acute exposure. Poikilocytosis, severe cytoplasmic vacuolation and deterioration of cytoplasmic membrane in erythrocytes occurred following chronic exposure. Significant polycythemia with collateral rise in Hb and Hct were manifest in the acutely intoxicated fish. By contrast, chronic exposure caused marked erythropenia and an accompanying reduction in Hb and Hct values. Leucocyte subpopulations showed an initial rise and then a fall in the thrombocytes together with a significant lymphocytosis, neutropenia, and basophilia. Pathological changes were observed in the gills, kidneys, and liver of Cr-exposed fish.  相似文献
