We measured dormant season (November through February) maintenance respiration rates (R(m)) in stems and branches of 9-year-old loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) growing in plots under conditions of controlled nutrient and water supply in an effort to determine the relationships between R(m) and tissue size (surface area, sapwood volume, sapwood dry weight), tissue nitrogen content and temperature. Dormant season R(m) per unit size (i.e., surface area, &mgr;mol m(-2) s(-1); sapwood volume, &mgr;mol m(-3) s(-1); or sapwood dry weight, nmol g(-1) s(-1)) varied with tissue size, but was constant with respect to tissue nitrogen content (&mgr;mol mol(-1) N s(-1)). Cambium temperature accounted for 61 and 77% of the variation in stem and branch respiration, respectively. The basal respiration rate (respiration at 0 degrees C) increased with tissue nitrogen content, however, the Q(10) did not. Improved nutrition more than doubled stem basal respiration rate and increased branch basal respiration by 38%. Exponential equations were developed to model stem and branch respiration as a function of cambium temperature and tissue nitrogen content. We conclude that failure to account for tissue nitrogen effects on respiration rates will result in serious errors when estimating annual maintenance costs. 相似文献

Calcitonin was used in conjunction with saline diuresis, furosemide, and prednisone in treatment of a dog that consumed a rodenticide that contained cholecalciferol and has been touted as safe for nontarget species. This study was conducted to identify and analyse the expression of gametogenesis‐associated genes and proteins in foetal and adult buffalo gonads of both the sexes. Relative quantification of the genes was determined by qPCR and Western blotting. Immunohistochemistry was also performed for various gametogenesis‐associated proteins in foetal and adult gonads of both the sexes. We observed significantly (p < 0.05) increased expression of primordial germ cell‐specific, meiotic as well as genes associated with oocyte maturation and development in foetal ovaries as compared to the adult ones. However, significantly (p < 0.05) increased expression of proteins associated with oocyte maturation like GDF9 and ZP4 was found in adult ovaries, indicating temporal regulation of mRNA translation during oogenesis. Meiotic genes showed significantly (p < 0.05) increased expression in adult testes as compared to foetal testes and ovaries, indicating onset of meiosis at a later stage in spermatogenesis. In general, the expression of primordial germ cell‐associated as well as meiotic genes was higher in adult testes, indicating the increased biological activity in the organ. Immunohistochemistry revealed localized expression of gametogenesis‐associated proteins in ovarian follicles and seminiferous tubules of testes, while the surrounding somatic tissues were devoid of these proteins. The study gives an understanding of the sequential and temporal events of gene expression as well as mRNA translation during male and female gametogenesis. It could also be concluded that follicles and seminiferous tubules are the functional units of the female and male gonads, respectively, and their function could be enhanced by appropriate chemical and genetic intervention of the somatic tissue immediately surrounding them. This assumes importance in the context that buffalo attains sexual maturity at an older age of 2–3 years and have smaller ovaries with lesser number of primordial follicles in comparison with cattle, which is suggested to be the main reason of their poor breeding performance. 相似文献

Rapid decomposition of phytate applied to a calcareous soil demonstrated by a solution 31P NMR study
myo‐Inositol hexakisphosphate (phytate) is widely regarded as an abundant form of soil organic phosphorus (P) in many soils. Its abundance is believed to be because of its resistance to microbial degradation. We examined the fate of phytate added to a calcareous soil as a solution at a concentration of 58 mg P kg−1, with and without the addition of wheat straw. The soil was incubated for 13 weeks, with phytate concentrations determined at 0, 1, 4, 7 and 13 weeks using NaOH‐EDTA soil extraction followed by 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The phytate concentration declined rapidly, with 18% (phytate + wheat straw) and 12% (phytate) of the initial phytate remaining after 13 weeks. This coincided with an increase in the proportion of orthophosphate relative to total NaOH‐EDTA extractable P (from 65 to 81%) and a small increase in α‐ and β‐glycerophosphate concentration, providing evidence for the microbial degradation of phytate. The decrease in phytate concentration was consistent with a first‐order decay with a half‐life for phytate of 4–5 weeks. This study demonstrates that in the calcareous soil examined, phytate was not highly stable, but a potentially biologically available form of P. In order to quantify the concentration of P species, we developed an improved method of spectral deconvolution. This method accounted for a broad signal (3.5–6.5 ppm) in the monoester region of the spectra that represented up to 23% of the total extractable P. The Cassini Radio and Plasma Wave Science (RPWS) Langmuir probe (LP) sensor observed the cold plasma environment around Titan during the first two flybys. The data show that conditions in Saturn's magnetosphere affect the structure and dynamics deep in the ionosphere of Titan. The maximum measured ionospheric electron number density reached 3800 per cubic centimeter near closest approach, and a complex chemistry was indicated. The electron temperature profiles are consistent with electron heat conduction from the hotter Titan wake. The ionospheric escape flux was estimated to be 10(25) ions per second. 相似文献
