A 22-year-old Irish Sport Horse presented following a period of bilateral blindness with subsequent spontaneous resolution. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated features consistent with pachymeningitis. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis revealed increased numbers of basophils, suggestive of an immunologic or neoplastic aetiology. It was suspected that the enlarged meninges led to compression of the optic nerves in the optic canals, causing bilateral blindness. Initial spontaneous remission, as seen in this case, has been reported in human patients with this condition. Pachymeningitis should be considered as a possible cause of cranial nerve deficits, including bilateral and unilateral blindness, in horses.  相似文献

Although morel mushrooms are widely used as tasty ingredients in savory dishes, knowledge of the key compounds evoking their attractive taste is still very fragmentary. In the present study, taste activity-guided fractionation of an aqueous morel extract by means of the recently developed taste dilution analysis (TDA) enabled the localization of several umami-like-tasting fractions as well as a fraction imparting an intense mouth-drying sensation to the oral cavity. Hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC), LC-MS, and amino acid analysis led to the successful identification of gamma-aminobutyric acid as the chemical inducer of the mouth-drying and mouth-coating oral sensations imparted by the morel extract. Besides the well-known umami-like taste contributors L-glutamic acid, L-aspartic acid, and succinic acid, an additional HILIC fraction was isolated and evaluated as tasting umami-like. LC-MS and NMR studies revealed that this fraction consisted of a mixture of (S)-malic acid 1-O-alpha-D-glucopyranoside and (S)-malic acid 1-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside, the structure of which could be successfully confirmed by independent synthesis. To the best of our knowledge, this morel-derived glycoside, which we named (S)-morelid, has previously not been reported in any food products. Sensory analysis of aqueous solutions of the compounds identified revealed threshold concentrations of 0.02 mmol/L for the mouth-drying effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid and 6.0 mmol/L for the umami-like, slightly sour taste of (S)-morelid.  相似文献

A neonatal foal with signs of rectal bleeding was diagnosed with an intraluminal rectal mass and intussusception on surgical exploration of the abdomen. Histologically, the mass consisted of cystic spaces lined by simple columnar epithelium with numerous goblet cells and was surrounded by thin bands of smooth muscle in a myxomatous stroma. Although the mass shared similarities with retrorectal cystic hamartoma (tailgut cyst) and juvenile polyps, described in human medicine, location and histologic findings were not entirely consistent with either condition.  相似文献

Pulmonary fibrosis is a devastating and often progressive condition leading to exercise intolerance and frequently the demise of the animal. Although uncommonly encountered in horses, the condition is intensely researched both in human medicine and animal models. Viral infections have long been suspected to play a part in the development of pulmonary fibrosis and neoplastic conditions in other species. In 2007, an association between equine herpesvirus 5 (EHV‐5) infection and nodular pulmonary fibrosis in horses was suggested and the name equine multinodular pulmonary fibrosis (EMPF) was introduced. Recently, the presence of EHV‐5 in equine lymphoma has also emerged. The case report by Schwarz et al. in this issue describes a horse suffering from concurrent T cell leukaemia and EMPF in association with EHV‐5. This article summarises current knowledge about EMPF and EHV‐5 infections in horses, recent developments in the understanding of pulmonary fibrosis in man and the proposed contribution of viral infections to pulmonary fibrosis and neoplastic conditions.  相似文献

The priority in treating the equine patient with acute diarrhoea is to stabilise the haemodynamic aberrations secondary to the fluid and electrolyte losses. Once this has been initiated and the patient is stabilised ancillary treatments may be beneficial. Besides the well established effects of NSAIDs and polymixin B on systemic inflammation, recent studies suggest that the use of DTOS to bind bacterial toxins and Saccharomyces boulardii to reduce the severity and duration of diarrhoea may be beneficial. The justification for using probiotic products is scant. There is no evidence to suggest that systemic use of antimicrobials benefits equine patients with colitis, with the exception of metronidazole in cases of clostridial diarrhoea. In light of their potentially detrimental effects, their use can, in the opinion of the authors, not be advocated. Better understanding of the pathways of systemic inflammation and more selective anti‐inflammatory drugs may be of great benefit in the future.  相似文献
