Appropriate soil amendments may increase plant available water and crop yields on coarse sandy soils under drought conditions. In this study, we applied straw ash or straw biochar from gasification to a Danish coarse sandy subsoil to assess the effects on soil water retention, evapotranspiration and crop yields. Spring barley (2016, 2017) and winter wheat (2018) were grown over three years in columns containing 25cm of organic matter-rich topsoil, 80 cm of amended coarse sandy soil (1.5%, 3%, 6% wt. ash or 1% wt. biochar or control soil) and 45 cm of un-amended subsoil. Precipitation, evaporative demands and soil moisture were recorded across the growth seasons, with 2018 having severe drought conditions. This year evapotranspiration levels increased with increasing ash and biochar content (by 54% and 33% for the 6% ash- and 1% biochar-amended soils, respectively), and plant dry matter increased by 18% in both the 1% biochar- and 6% ash-treated soils compared to the untreated control. A linear relationship was established between in situ field capacity and ash dosage (R2 = .96), showing an increase of 2.2% per percentage (wt.) of ash added, while the 1% biochar treatment increased the capacity by 3.5%, indicating a higher efficiency than for ash. However, we did not find significant positive effects on grain yields. The results show that ash and biochar have the potential to significantly increase soil water retention, evapotranspiration and total dry matter yield in drought conditions, but that this may not correspond to an increase in grain yield. 相似文献

A high use-efficiency of fertilizer N remains essential to sustain high crop productivity with low environmental impact. However, little is known on the long-term lability of mineral fertilizer N.Aims
To quantify crop uptake and leaching of 15N-labelled mineral fertilizer that has been retained in an agricultural soil for 25–30 years in crops with variable growing season.Methods
A field plot received 15N-labelled mineral fertilizers over a period of 5 years and was then kept under arable cropping for 12 years. After relocation to 16 lysimeters, the topsoil grew set-aside grassland for the next 13 years. Then crop uptakes and leaching losses of 15N remaining in soil was tested over a 2-year period by either converting set-aside grass to production grassland, or by replacing it with spring barley (+/− autumn cover crop) or vegetation-free fallow. All treatments received unlabelled mineral N fertilizers.Results
Crop uptake and leaching of 15N were generally highest in the first test year after termination of the set-aside. The leaching of residual 15N in soil declined in the order: vegetation-free soil (4.7%), spring barley (1.9%), spring barley + cover crop (0.7%) and production grassland (0.2%). Corresponding losses for the second leaching period were 2.7%, 0.9%, 0.4% and 0.06%. There was a fixed relationship between leaching losses of 15N and total N.Conclusions
After residing in soil for 25–30 years, the lability of labelled mineral N fertilizer residues appeared slightly higher than the lability of bulk soil N. Autumn vegetation was crucial for reducing leaching losses. 相似文献3.

The Argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi represents the dominant demersal fish and one of the main fisheries in the Argentine Sea. We analyzed over 17 years (September 1997–February 2015) of satellite surface chlorophyll concentration (CHL) and sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) data in the main spawning (SUB) and nursery (SJG) areas of the Patagonian stock of M. hubbsi. The variability observed in these environmental conditions was related to interannual differences in the reproductive success of hake. CHL values were maximum during austral spring (October–November) and minimum during winter (June–August). Blooms started in late September and lasted on average 128 and 110 days at SUB and SJG, respectively. At SUB, average CHL at the time of reproduction, the day of occurrence of the maximum chlorophyll concentration, and fall SST anomalies were significantly related to recruitment (RVPA) a year later and to two Larval Survival Indices (LSISSB and LSITEP) considered. At SJG, RVPA, LSISSB, and LSITEP showed negative correlations with fall (March–May) SSTA. Total egg production was not related to fall SSTA or spring phytoplankton dynamics at SUB or SJG. Significant positive trends were observed in the time series of CHL and SSTA in the study area. The trends observed in CHL represent average increases of 40.7% and 35.7% since 1997 at SUB and SJG, respectively. The potential implications of long‐term changes in environmental conditions for hake reproductive success are discussed. 相似文献

Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic prokaryotes with wide geographic distribution that can produce secondary metabolites named cyanotoxins. These toxins can be classified into three main types according to their mechanism of action in vertebrates: hepatotoxins, dermatotoxins and neurotoxins. Many studies on the effects of cyanobacteria and their toxins over a wide range of aquatic organisms, including invertebrates and vertebrates, have reported acute effects (e.g., reduction in survivorship, feeding inhibition, paralysis), chronic effects (e.g., reduction in growth and fecundity), biochemical alterations (e.g., activity of phosphatases, GST, AChE, proteases), and behavioral alterations. Research has also focused on the potential for bioaccumulation and transferring of these toxins through the food chain. Although the herbivorous zooplankton is hypothesized as the main target of cyanotoxins, there is not unquestionable evidence of the deleterious effects of cyanobacteria and their toxins on these organisms. Also, the low toxin burden in secondary consumers points towards biodilution of microcystins in the food web as the predominant process. In this broad review we discuss important issues on bioaccumulation and the effects of cyanotoxins, with emphasis on microcystins, as well as drawbacks and future needs in this field of research. 相似文献

Genomes of animals as different as sponges and humans show conservation of global architecture. Here we show that multiple genomic features including transposon diversity, developmental gene repertoire, physical gene order, and intron-exon organization are shattered in the tunicate Oikopleura, belonging to the sister group of vertebrates and retaining chordate morphology. Ancestral architecture of animal genomes can be deeply modified and may therefore be largely nonadaptive. This rapidly evolving animal lineage thus offers unique perspectives on the level of genome plasticity. It also illuminates issues as fundamental as the mechanisms of intron gain. 相似文献

Chloris virgata is a problematic weed around the world. Prediction of weed germination rates could be a useful strategy to optimise timing of weed control actions. We studied the germination and emergence of C. virgata collected seeds under different after-ripening treatments and different exhumation dates after seed dispersal, to estimate seed dormancy level and predict weed emergence dynamics under field conditions. Three experiments were conducted under controlled conditions to determine base, optimum and maximum germination temperatures (Tb, To and Tm respectively) and comprised: (a) exposure of seeds to gradually increasing and decreasing temperatures between 5 and 35°C; (b) exposure of seeds to different constant temperatures; and (c) exposure of seeds to different light quality conditions (red – far red ratio) and temperature regimes (constant and alternating temperatures). To explore genuine environmental conditions, a field experiment was performed to determine weed emergence under different shading levels. Finally, with the data obtained, a thermal time model for dormancy release was used to predict C. virgata seedling emergence in the Argentine Pampas region. Seeds after-ripened in cold and wet conditions and constant 25°C showed the highest germination percentages. The values of Tb (7°C), To (28°C) and Tm (40°C) remained constant at all exhumation dates. Neither light quality nor thermal regime modified the final germination percentages. However, shading delayed seedling emergence under field conditions, even when it was adjusted by thermal time. These results may allow predicting C. virgata emergence in temperate regions and help to improve weed control in integrated weed management strategies. 相似文献

Seven phosphate-mobilizing pseudomonads were isolated, identified, and characterized in terms of their biofertilizer potential and root-colonizing properties. Pseudomonas protegens (ex-fluorescens) CHA0 was used for comparative purposes. Four isolates (LF-MB1, LF-P1, LF-P2, and LF-P3) clustered with members of the “Pseudomonas fluorescens complex,” whereas the other three (LF-MB2, LF-V1, and LF-V2) clustered with members of the “Pseudomonas putida/Pseudomonas aeruginosa complex.” Assays in buffered liquid growth medium supplemented with tricalcium phosphate enabled the separation of the isolates into two groups: group A (LF-P1, LF-P2, LF-P3, and LF-V1) solubilized P from 151 up to 182?μg?mL?1, and group B (LF-MB1, LF-MB2, and LF-V2) solubilized less than 150?μg?P?mL?1. All isolates displayed acid and alkaline phosphatase activities. With the exception of LF-MB2, all isolates were able to degrade phospholipids from lecithin. Additionally, all isolates exhibited extracellular protease activity, and four isolates produced hydrogen cyanide, two traits that are related to biocontrol of phytopathogens. To study root colonization in non-sterile soil, isolates were doubly tagged with gfp and a tetracycline resistance cassette. After 15?days of competition with the indigenous bacterial flora, all tagged isolates colonized soybean roots at counts ranging from 7.6?×?105 to 1.7?×?107?CFU?g?1. The results indicate that there are already efficient phosphate-mobilizing pseudomonads adapted to agricultural bulk soils under no-till management in Argentina and thus having excellent potential for use as biofertilizers. 相似文献

In order to investigate the occurrence of Hepatozoon infection in Neotropical felids from Brazil, blood from the jugular or cephalic vein was taken from 29 non-domestic felids including ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), little spotted cat (Leopardus tigrinus), margay (Leopardus wiedii), and jaguarondi (Puma yagouaroundi) from the Northeast region of Brazil. Hepatozoon infection was confirmed by light microscopy and molecular techniques. The results showed five naturally infected felids. Partial sequences of the 18S rRNA gene of the Hepatozoon sp. from these felids were further analyzed. Sequences revealed that the isolates found are closely related to Hepatozoon sp. from domestic cats in Spain. Hepatozoon species from Neotropical felids were identified molecularly and characterized for the first time. This is also the first report of Hepatozoon infection in a little spotted cat. 相似文献
