Three cases of discospondylitis in the dog, caused respectively by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus epidermidis, are reported. These bacteria have not previously been documented as being the cause of the condition in this species. The neurological involvement was severe in all three cases. Two dogs were paraplegic and one was tetraplegic, and one of the paraplegic dogs had no deep pain on the extremities of both pelvic limbs. All dogs were treated surgically with a satisfactory neurological recovery.  相似文献

Monitoring biodiversity at the level of habitats and landscape is becoming widespread in Europe and elsewhere as countries establish international and national habitat conservation policies and monitoring systems. Earth Observation (EO) data offers a potential solution to long-term biodiversity monitoring through direct mapping of habitats or by integrating Land Cover/Use (LC/LU) maps with contextual spatial information and in situ data. Therefore, it appears necessary to develop an automatic/semi-automatic translation framework of LC/LU classes to habitat classes, but also challenging due to discrepancies in domain definitions. In the context of the FP7 BIO_SOS (www.biosos.eu) project, the authors demonstrated the feasibility of the Food and Agricultural Organization Land Cover Classification System (LCCS) taxonomy to habitat class translation. They also developed a framework to automatically translate LCCS classes into the recently proposed General Habitat Categories classification system, able to provide an exhaustive typology of habitat types, ranging from natural ecosystems to urban areas around the globe. However discrepancies in terminology, plant height criteria and basic principles between the two mapping domains inducing a number of one-to-many and many-to-many relations were identified, revealing the need of additional ecological expert knowledge to resolve the ambiguities. This paper illustrates how class phenology, class topological arrangement in the landscape, class spectral signature from multi-temporal Very High spatial Resolution (VHR) satellite imagery and plant height measurements can be used to resolve such ambiguities. Concerning plant height, this paper also compares the mapping results obtained by using accurate values extracted from LIght Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) data and by exploiting EO data texture features (i.e. entropy) as a proxy of plant height information, when LIDAR data are not available. An application for two Natura 2000 coastal sites in Southern Italy is discussed.  相似文献

The sequential extraction procedure proposed by the European Commission Measurement and Testing Programme, combined with Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis(SEM/EDS), was applied to identify and quantify the chemical andmineralogical forms of Cu, Ni, Fe, Mn, Zn, Pb, Cr and Cd presentin the topsoil from a mining and smelting area near Sudbury (Ontario, Canada). The possible mobility of the chemical forms was also assessed. The metal fractions: (1) soluble and exchangeable, (2) occluded in manganese oxides and in easily reducible iron oxides, (3) organically bound and in form of sulphides, (4) residual mainly present in the mineral lattice structures were separated. Cu and Ni were the major metallic contaminants, occurring in soils in broad ranges of concentrations: Cu 11–1890 and Ni 23–2150 mg kg-1. Cu was uniformly distributed among allthe extracted fractions. Ni was found associated mainly withthe residual forms, accounting for 17–92%, with an averageof 64%, of the total Ni present in the soils. Fe, Mn, Zn,Pb, Cr and Cd, while occurring in most analysed samples innormal soil concentrations, were primarily held in theresidual mineral fraction (on average >50%). The solubleand exchangeable forms made a small contribution (≤8.1%)to the total content of metals extracted. At least 14% ofthe total Cd, Mn and Pb was mobilised from the reducibleforms. The oxidizable fraction assumed mean values higher than10% only for Pb and Zn. Statistical treatment of the experimental data showed significant correlations between totalmetal content of the soils, some soil properties such as pH value, clay and organic matter content, and metal concentrationsin the various fractions. SEM/EDS analysis showed Fe in form ofoxides and sulphides in soils and Cu, Ni, Mn, Zn and Cr in association with iron oxides. Numerous black carbonaceous particles and precipitates of aluminium fluoride salts, observedin the solid residue left after `total’ digestion, were found tocontain Fe, Ni and Cr.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine the contaminantlevel of the Sarno River basin, a small creek located insouthwestern Italy. Six sampling site locations were selected tocoincide with two previous studies conducted in 1975 and 1985 toprovide a basis for comparison. For each location, twelve sampleswere collected over the period October 1997–September 1998.Results indicated a degradation in river water quality, especiallynear the mouth. This was reflected by a dissolved oxygenconcentration of about 0.8 mg L-1 near the urban areas ofScafati, Pompei and Castellamare of Stabia. At the same locations,BOD5 and COD values were two to five times higher than theallowable regulatory maximum levels, respectively. About 4 kmfrom the headwaters, the average oxygen concentration was 4.7 mgL-1, BOD5 values were close to the standard limit (37 vs 40 mg L-1), and COD values were above the standard limits(252 vs 160 mg L-1). Highest concentrations were detectedduring peak tomato production. During this time, settleable solidswere also elevated, two to six times the regulatory standard.Coliform bacteria densities were found in excess of the standardlimits at all sites. Near the head of the river, mean fecalcoliform (22,571 MPN mL-1) and streptococci densities (14,214 MPN mL-1) surpassed the regulatory level of 120 and 20 MPN mL-1, respectively, reflecting the input from the urbansettings of Sarno and agricultural fields. The heavy metaldissolved concentrations were low at all sampling sites. Most ofthe analyzed contaminants increased when comparend with 1985data. BOD5 increased 5 to 10 times at sites near the urbansettings of Scafati, Pompei and Castellamare di Stabia, whereasCOD increases were twofold at all sites. A decline of chromiumlevels was observed due to the recent effective treatment ofwaste water from the tanning plants.  相似文献

An 18-month-old, spayed female, domestic shorthaired cat was presented with clinical signs of depression and reluctance to walk, which progressed to nonambulatory tetraparesis. Increased opacification of both frontal sinuses and a cyst-like abnormality causing compression and displacement of the right frontal lobe were seen on computed tomography. Bilateral frontal sinus trephination and right transfrontal craniotomy revealed clear, viscous fluid in the right frontal sinus and rostral fossa, compatible with an intracranial mucocele. At a 6-month follow-up examination, no signs of recurrence were appreciated.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to review the developments in the last few years in two important issues related to Fe deficiency in plants. First, the current knowledge on the possible ways to carry out the diagnosis and prognosis of Fe deficiency in plants is discussed. This includes discussion on the best ways to carry out a meaningful analysis of Fe-containing compounds in different plant parts. We will also discuss other measurement techniques that can permit to assess the Fe nutritional status in plants, including leaf chlorophyll concentrations and others. Second, the new developments in management techniques to control and remediate iron deficiency are discussed. This includes possible improved ways to supply Fe compounds available to plants, both to the soil and to the irrigation water. We also discuss possible ways to supply directly the plant with Fe containing compounds, either to the foliage or to the stem. A particular emphasis is given throughout the paper to fruit tree crops growing in Mediterranean areas.  相似文献

Background: Tumor proliferation in human intracranial meningiomas can be defined by the reactivity of the monoclonal antibody MIB-1 to the Ki-67 antigen. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a pro-angiogenic factor, is a predictive marker for survival of dogs with intracranial meningiomas.
Hypothesis: Ki-67 is expressed in canine intracranial meningiomas and is associated with VEGF expression. Ki-67 expression is a prognostic marker for patient outcome.
Animals: Seventy client-owned dogs with WHO grade I intracranial meningiomas.
Methods: Retrospective study assessing the degree of immunostaining for Ki-67 by MIB-1 and VEGF expression in intracranial meningioma tissue from dogs. MIB-1 Labeling Index (LI) was calculated with Image J NIH-software. Extent, intensity, and distribution of VEGF-expression was assessed semiquantitatively. Cross tabulations with Fisher's exact tests and nonparametric Spearman's rank correlations were performed to identify associations between VEGF expression and MIB-1 LI. Fifteen dogs underwent postsurgical radiotherapy and were included in survival analysis. The effect of MIB-1 LI on survival was examined by Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazards regression procedures.
Results: Ki-67 staining was positive in 91% (64/70) and VEGF expression was detected in 96% (67/70). There was no significant association between VEGF expression and MIB-1 LI. MIB-1 LI was not associated with survival.
Conclusions and Clinical Importance: MIB-1 antibody can be used to document cell proliferation in intracranial meningiomas in dogs, but does not predict outcome. No association between VEGF as a marker of angiogenesis and tumor proliferation was found. Angiogenesis might be a more important predictor of meningioma activity in dogs than is Ki-67.  相似文献

Objective— To compare the biomechanical properties of cervical arthroplasty to a ventral slot procedure and pin‐polymethylmethacrylate (pin‐PMMA) fixation. Sample Population— Fresh cadaveric cervical (C2–T1) spines from 6 large dogs. Methods— Four spinal conditions were studied in each spinal specimen: intact, disk arthroplasty, ventral slot, and fixation with smooth pin‐PMMA at C5–C6 intervertebral space. Axial compression, torsion, flexion–extension, and lateral bending moments were sequentially tested on each specimen for the 4 spinal conditions. Data from the C3–C4, C4–C5, C5–C6, and C6–C7 vertebral motion units (VMUs) were compared among treatments. Results— In axial compression and torsion, the ventral slot procedure allowed significantly less motion than intact, pin‐PMMA, and arthroplasty groups at C5–C6. In lateral bending and flexion–extension, pin‐PMMA had the least motion of C5–C6, followed by the arthroplasty group, intact spine, and ventral slot, all of which were significantly different from each other. Overall, the artificial disk was better able to mimic the behavior of the intact specimens compared with the ventral slot and pin‐PMMA, producing similar displacements in axial compression and rotation in torsion, but more limited motion than intact in flexion–extension and in lateral bending. Conclusion— Cervical spine specimens with an implanted prosthesis have biomechanical behaviors more similar to an intact spine compared with spinal specimens with ventral slot and pin‐PMMA procedures. Cervical arthroplasty may then preserve some of the motion in the affected area after neural decompression while providing distraction. Clinical Relevance— Cervical arthroplasty should be further investigated in vivo to determine if it is a viable alternative to the ventral slot or pin‐PMMA procedures for surgical treatment of cervical diseases in dogs and in particular for treatment of disk‐associated caudal cervical spondylomyelopathy.  相似文献

Purpose

Phytostabilization with native plant species might represent an economically more realistic and cost-effective option than excavation, soil washing, and sludge disposal for rehabilitation of degraded and polluted industrial areas. This work was done to assess the changes induced by native plant revegetation in the chemical properties and mobility-bioavailability of Pb and Zn pollutants of soil and post-washing sludges from an Italian brownfield site of national interest.

Materials and methods

A 5-year native plant revegetation of polluted soil and relative post-washing sludges from a steel plant was achieved in situ and ex situ in pot and in the presence and absence of peat as organic amendment. During the experiment, the vegetation growth was monitored (Adamo et al. In Int J Environ Sci Technol 12(6):1811–1824, 2015). Before and after plant growth, the substrates were studied for pH, organic carbon, and carbonate contents. Lead, Zn, and other metal mobility and leachability were investigated by water extraction. The metal bioavailability was estimated by diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) extraction at pH 7.3. Sequential extractions (BCR procedure) were used to fractionate Pb and Zn in soil main geochemical forms. Plant ability to uptake metals was evaluated on the three most representative species: Bituminaria bituminosa, Daucus carota, and Dactylis glomerata.

Results and discussion

After 5 years of revegetation with native plants, the substrate pH and organic carbon content were respectively decreased and increased by plant growth, with changes masked by peat treatments. Although metal pollutants in both substrates were characterized by low water solubility and DTPA availability, after plant growth, an increase of rhizospheric Zn, Cu, Fe, and Mn solubility in H2O was detected. According to metal speciation, Pb and Zn were largely occluded in easily reducible manganese/iron oxides and trapped in the mineral structure of silicates, with no visible changes of distribution after plants. Water extraction always underestimated plant uptake, whereas DTPA and sequential extractions better predicted Pb and Zn uptake.

Conclusions

Despite the original extremely low mobility and bioavailability of metal pollutants in both soil and post-washing sludges, the acidification and increase of organic carbon content induced by peat amendments and plant growth enhance the solubility in water of metal-containing compounds. Therefore, attention must be paid to these effects in the long period. A continuous monitoring of the changes of pollutant mobility-bioavailability induced by native plant revegetation of brownfields is crucial to prevent risks to the surrounding environment and human health.
