1. The analysis, by means of line transects, of a Paramuricea clavata (Anthozoa: Gorgonacea) population forming a facies of the Mediterranean coralligenous community along the Portofino Promontory (Ligurian Sea, Italy) evidenced a high per cent of lesions inflicted to the gorgonian coenenchyme by anchoring and fishing activities. 2. This damage favours the development of aggregates of epibionts (mainly hydroids and bryozoans) which leads to greater mechanical stress through increased resistance of the colonies to water movement; where polychaetes and nematodes colonize the denuded skeleton, their burrowing activity weakens the colony. 3. In situ tissue regeneration experiments suggested that aggregation of epibionts can develop only if the injuries result, from continuing abrasion. 4. Injuries caused by anchoring and fishing can therefore be considered the major cause of mortality of Paramuricea clavata in the Portofino Promontory. 5. Paramuricea clavata re-colonizes experimentally denuded areas slowly and colonies take many years to reach the size of existing individuals and can be damaged easily by fishing and anchoring. 6. Special protection is needed for this key species of Mediterranean coral at Portofino Promontory, which is proposed as a Natural Marine Park. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Recently, plum pox potyvirus (PPV) has been found in Basilicata, southern Italy, on plum, apricot and peach. In 1992-09, we started a large-scale survey to verify the effectiveness of diagnostic methods used during seasons when it is difficult to reveal any presence of the virus. The assays were carried out by dot-blot hybridization on stone-fruit cultivars normally planted in this area. The virus was found, by dot-blot hybridization, to be present in seven cultivars of peach, four of apricot and one of plum. All plants were 8–10 years old and, except for two apricot cultivars, were not displaying any apparent symptoms in spring 1992. Five peach cultivars, intended for use as primary sources of propagation material, were then selected for further study, and assayed in 1992–11 by ELISA and RT-PCR. ELISA tests on these selected peach cultivars were consistently negative, while PCR tests were consistently positive. However ELISA tests gave positive results when repeated in 1993–05. These results not only suggest that primary propagation material should be tested by techniques more sensitive than ELISA, but also question the usefulness of carrying out tests during any phenological phases of the plant.  相似文献

ABSTRACT In this paper, a formal model for the relationship between innovation and growth in European Union regions is developed drawing upon the theoretical contribution of the systems of innovation approach. The model combines the analytical approach of the regional growth models with the insights of the systemic approach. The cross‐sectional analysis, covering all the Enlarged Europe (EU‐25) regions (for which data are available), shows that regional innovative activities (for which a specific measure is developed) play a significant role in determining differential regional growth patterns. Furthermore, the model sheds light on how geographical accessibility and human capital accumulation, by shaping the regional system of innovation, interact (in a statistically significant way) with local innovative activities, thus allowing them to be more (or less) effectively translated into economic growth. The paper shows that an increase in innovative effort is not necessarily likely to produce the same effect in all EU‐25 regions. Indeed, the empirical analysis suggests that in order to allow innovative efforts in peripheral regions to be as productive as in core areas, they need to be complemented by huge investments in human capital.  相似文献
