OBJECTIVE: To identify the risk factors for premature retirement because of tendon injury in a Thoroughbred racehorse population. ANIMALS: 175 Thoroughbred racehorses (cases) at the Hong Kong Jockey Club that were retired from racing because of tendon injury between 1997 and 2004 and for which the last preretirement exercise was at a fast pace were each matched with 3 control horses that were randomly selected from all uninjured horses that had galloped on the same date as that last exercise episode. PROCEDURES: Training data for all horses were examined. Conditional logistic regression analyses were performed to identify risk factors for retirement from racing attributable to tendon injury. Two multivariable conditional logistic regression models were created; each contained 8 explanatory variables. RESULTS: Compared with control horses, case horses were older at the time of import, accumulated more race distance soon after import, were more likely to have had previous official veterinary or ultrasonographic examinations, raced fewer times during their career, and were in training for a longer period and had exercised at a reduced intensity during the 180-day period preceding the last fast-paced work date. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In addition to identification of risk factors for tendon injury among racing Thoroughbreds, results have suggested that resources focused on obtaining accurate training data may be misdirected in the absence of internationally agreed criteria for incident tendon injury among racehorses. Nevertheless, changes in training intensity and findings of previous clinical examinations could be used to identify horses at risk of tendon injury-associated retirement.  相似文献

Three soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]cultivars (Samsoy 1, TGx 1025-12E and TGx 996-26E) were evaluated for yield losses resulting from frogeye leaf spot caused by Cercospora sojina Hara. Replicated field plots were established at two locations in Nigeria that have a high natural infestation of C. sojina. The cultivars were either not sprayed, sprayed once or sprayed twice during the growing season with the fungicide benomyl. Disease spread early in the season was from border rows of a susceptible soybean cultivar into the plots. Mean disease severity (DS) for unsprayed cultivars ranged from 0.6 to 4.5 on a scale of 0–5. Plots receiving two sprays had lower DS values, ranging from 0.5 to 2.4. Differences between unsprayed and double-sprayed plots for yield and 300-seed weight ranged from 2.5 to 58.8 and 0.6 to 28.6%, respectively. Seed weight was negatively correlated with DS.  相似文献

 Soybean cultivars capable of nodulating with indigenous Bradyrhizobium spp. have been developed by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and national programs in Africa in order to avoid artificial inoculation by resource-poor farmers in Africa. The current selection procedure for enhanced N2 fixation is based on an assessment of nodule formation which does not directly quantify the proportions of crop N derived from the atmosphere. We have monitored N accumulation patterns and N2 fixation in nine promiscuous soybean cultivars with different maturity periods, using the 15N dilution technique. Nodule development generally peaked at the early podfill stage for all cultivars except Tgx 1519-1D and Tgx 1447-2D in which it continued to increase. The proportion of crop N derived from fixation (%NDFA) ranged between 51% and 67%, 77% and 84%, and 66% and 73% at full bloom, early podfill, and physiological maturity stages, respectively. Total N accumulation increased in all soybean genotypes with increasing plant age. Significant correlations (P<0.001) were established between nodule weight and %NDFA, even though this did not explain the relationship between nodule development and N2 fixation in cultivars such as Tgx 1519-1D. Promiscuous soybean cultivars retained between 10% and 19% of total N accumulated at the final harvest, in belowground biomass. Our results indicated that these soybean cultivars can derive substantial proportions of plant N from N2 fixation in soils where compatible indigenous bradyrhizobia populations are adequate and effective. Also, we have substantiated the claims that qualitative nodulation parameters currently used to select varieties with a high N2 fixation capacity need to be validated with other measurements of N2 fixation. Field trials were replicated at four sites in the moist savanna ecological zone of West Africa to study the effect of maturity class and phosphorus (P) rate on grain yield and total protein yield (TPY) of some new soya bean varieties. Grain yield and TPY averaged 1.43 Mg ha?1 and 587 kg ha?1, respectively. Without P application grain yield and TPY were not significantly different among the varieties. In addition, at zero P treatment, grain yield and TPY were not significantly different among three sites where available P was 6.2 mg kg?1 or less. P application depressed grain yield and TPY at a site where the available soil P was high (16.2 mg kg?1). With P application grain yield and TPY were in the range of 1.2–2.28 Mg ha?1 and 505–948 kg ha?1, respectively, for the varieties compared with 0.99–1.12 Mg ha?1 and 454–462 kg ha?1 when P was not applied. The response of grain yield to 30 kg P ha?1 was substantial at Gidan Waya (113 %), Kasuwan Magani (63 %) and Fashola (60 %), three sites where available soil P was low. The application of 30 kg P ha?1 increased grain yield by 21 % in early, 26 % in medium and 58–70 % in the late varieties. Significant variety by P rate interaction effects were observed on grain yield and TPY but not on grain protein concentration (GPC). TPY showed greater response to P in the late varieties than in the early or medium. While seed size correlated significantly and positively with GPC, P application had no significant effect on GPC.  相似文献

The soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura, is a pest of soybean [Glycine max L. (Merrill)] in Asia, and its recent establishment in North America has led to large, recurring outbreaks that have challenged pest management practitioners there to seek environmentally responsible means for its control. Growth-chamber experiments were conducted to determine and characterize host-plant resistance among several soybean accessions. Soybean plants were first screened for resistance by rating the population growth of A. glycines in two tests. All plants of PI 230977 and 25% of PI 71506 plants were resistant (≤100 aphids per plant) in the first screening test. All ‘Dowling’, PI 71506 and PI 230977 were resistant (≤150 aphids per plant), and 50% of plants of line ‘G93-9223’ were resistant in the second test. Follow-up experiments showed that antixenosis was a modality of resistance based on reduced nymphiposition by A. glycines on Dowling, PI 230977 and PI 71506 in no-choice tests and on fewer numbers of A. glycines on Dowling, PI 230977, PI 71506 and G93-5223 in distribution tests. Antixenosis in Dowling and PI 230977 was stronger in the unifoliolate leaves than in other shoot structures, whereas distribution of A. glycines within plants of PI 71506 and G93-5223 suggested comparable suitability between unifoliolate leaves and other shoot structures of these accessions. Antibiosis to A. glycines was evident as a lower proportion of aphids that reproduced on PI 230977 and from fewer progeny on PI 230977 and Dowling than on 91B91. The number of days from birth to reproduction by A. glycines did not differ among accessions. Results confirmed Dowling and PI 71506 as strong sources of resistance to A. glycines. The levels of antixenosis and antibiosis to A. glycines in PI 230977 and antixenosis to A. glycines in G93-9223 suggest that these accessions may also be valuable to soybean breeding programs as sources of resistance.  相似文献

Recent studies suggest that unidentified prokaryotes fix inorganic carbon at globally significant rates in the immense dark ocean. Using single-cell sorting and whole-genome amplification of prokaryotes from two subtropical gyres, we obtained genomic DNA from 738 cells representing most cosmopolitan lineages. Multiple cells of Deltaproteobacteria cluster SAR324, Gammaproteobacteria clusters ARCTIC96BD-19 and Agg47, and some Oceanospirillales from the lower mesopelagic contained ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase and sulfur oxidation genes. These results corroborated community DNA and RNA profiling from diverse geographic regions. The SAR324 genomes also suggested C(1) metabolism and a particle-associated life-style. Microautoradiography and fluorescence in situ hybridization confirmed bicarbonate uptake and particle association of SAR324 cells. Our study suggests potential chemolithoautotrophy in several uncultured Proteobacteria lineages that are ubiquitous in the dark oxygenated ocean and provides new perspective on carbon cycling in the ocean's largest habitat.  相似文献

Half diallel crosses among ten pure breeding lines of soybean were made in 1997 and 1998 to study the inheritance of pod shattering in soybean. Evaluation for pod shattering among F2 segregating populations was carried out in an oven set at 80 °C for 12 hours. Diallel analysis was carried out to estimate genetic parameters and detect presence of non allelic interaction of genes affecting pod shattering. Hayman's diallel analysis indicated significant variation of Wr + Vr and Wr – Vr over arrays, suggesting epistatic gene action. Similarly results from a joint regression coefficient over replications were significantly (p < 0.05) different from unity and zero, suggesting presence of non allelic interaction of genes. The intercept was positive, suggesting partial dominance for the shattering trait. Both general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) effects were significant (p < 0.05). The influence of soybean (Glycine max) planting date on seasonal epidemics of frogeye leaf spot caused by Cercospora sojina and on grain yield, was evaluated during the 1991 and 1992 cropping seasons. Two susceptible (Samsoy 1 and TGx 849-313D) and one resistant (TGx 996-26E) soybean cultivars were used in field trials at Zonkwa, in the southern Kaduna state of Nigeria. Four field plantings were made at 14-day intervals from late May to mid0July. For each planting date, half the plots received foliar applications of benomyl at R1 and R3 growth stages, and the other half was untreated. Frogeye disease severity ratings were taken for all plots at R4 to R5 growth stages, and grain yield for each plot was measured at harvest. There was a significant (p < 0.05) increase in disease severity between the first and third plantings on the two susceptible cultivars in 1991, and on TGx 849-313D only in 1992. Corresponding yield reductions for the two susceptible cultivars averaged 13 and 31% for the treated and untreated plots, respectively, with each 2-week delay beyond the first planting date in 1991, and 5 and 6%, respectively, in 1992. There was no significant difference in disease among all treatments on the resistant cultivar, TGx 996-26E. Under Nigerian conditions, an increase in frogeye leaf spot severity can be expected with delayed planting of soybean after 1 June, and this can result in a corresponding loss of crop yield.  相似文献

We did a case–control study of the association of several animal, flock and management factors with scrapie in Irish sheep flocks. The characteristics of 61 sheep flocks with at least one laboratory-confirmed case of scrapie (1990–1998) were compared to 61 flocks with no history of scrapie and matched by geographical location and attending veterinary surgeon. The 61 scrapie-affected flocks were from the database of known scrapie flocks in the Republic of Ireland at the start of the study. In conditional multiple logistic regression, factors associated with increased odds of scrapie in a sheep flock were (i) larger breeding-flock size, (ii) purchasing replacement sheep through the market, (iii) spreading sheep compost on the land and (iv) disposing of the placenta in the compost. Factors associated with decreased odds of scrapie were (i) using cattle slurry on the land and (ii) feeding proprietary concentrates to lambs.  相似文献
