At germination, container-grown shortleaf pine seedlings were inoculated with Pisolithus tinctorius (Pers.) Coker & Couch or left uninoculated, and both groups were fertilized semiweekly with a modified Hoagland's solution supplemented with 0 or 0.4 mM boric acid. After 12, 16 and 24 weeks, seedling root tissue was analyzed for ectomycorrhizal colonization, phenolic concentration and phenoloxidase activity. In addition, phenoloxidase activity was assayed in P. tinctorius that had been cultured in a liquid medium containing boric acid. Inoculation with P. tinctorius increased the root phenolic concentration of 16- and 24-week-old seedlings, and increased root phenoloxidase activity in 12-, 16- and 24-week-old seedlings. Fertilization with boric acid reduced the phenolic concentration of P. tinctorius ectomycorrhizae after 24 weeks. Although boric acid fertilization did not affect the phenoloxidase activity of 12-, 16- and 24-week-old inoculated roots, or that of 16- and 24-week-old uninoculated roots, it increased the phenoloxidase activity of P. tinctorius grown in vitro and 12-week-old uninoculated roots. We conclude that boric acid fertilization influences the phenolic relations of the shortleaf pine-P. tinctorius ectomycorrhizal association, possibly through a boric acid-induced increase in phenoloxidase activity.  相似文献

Lecanicillium lecanii and Beauveria bassiana are important entomopathogens of Aphis gossypii. Their capacity to colonize crop plants is also becoming widely recognized. Their presence in crop plants indicates the possibility of a much greater potential for contact between insect and fungus than previously recognized. The present experiment aimed to study the effects of endophytic strains of these fungi on the survival, and reproduction of A. gossypii. Contact with conidia of both fungi significantly reduced the rate and period of reproduction of A. gossypii. The culture filtrates of L. lecanii and B. bassiana significantly increased mortality and feeding-choice experiments indicate that insects may be able to detect metabolites of the fungi. The culture filtrate of L. lecanii also significantly reduced the reproduction of the aphid. The ethyl acetate and methanolic fractions of the culture filtrate and of mycelia of L. lecanii also caused significant mortality and reduced fecundity of A. gossypii. The methanolic fractions of mycelia of B. bassiana caused significant mortality of A. gossypii. The present investigations indicated that A. gossypii is affected by contact with both conidia and fungal metabolites. This broad influence indicates that these fungi may have a role in regulating insect pest populations.  相似文献

Following site preparation, three cultural treatments and three open-pollinated loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) families were studied on a gently sloping Beauregard silt loam in central Louisiana. The treatments were: (1) fertilization (either broadcast application of 177 kg N and 151 kg P/ha or none); (2) herbicide application (either broadcast application of herbicides during the first through third growing seasons, and felling of a few, scattered volunteer hardwood trees greater than 2.5 cm dbh during the third growing season or none); and (3) litter application (either broadcast application of 37 Mg/ha (oven-dried weight) of pine straw over the plots to form a 10 to 15 cm layer or none). The subplot treatment was planting stock, where in November 1988, 28-week-old container-grown loblolly pine seedlings from three open-pollinated families were randomly assigned to planting locations. Through five growing seasons, fertilization and weed control with herbicides resulted in the greatest loblolly pine productivity, but the use of herbicides severely reduced other vegetation. Applying litter, which was less effective than herbicides as a weed control treatment, increased the presence of blackberry (Rubus spp.) when herbicides were not applied. Applying litter resulted in a decrease and fertilization resulted in an increase in the number and length of live lateral roots. Soil temperature was reduced by litter application. Treatment responses were not influenced by loblolly pine family.  相似文献

In two separate experiments, 72 crossbred ewes were fed hay, haylage (50% dry matter) and corn diets with ad libitum salt-mineral mixtures (SMM; Exp. 1) or salt (Exp. 2). Calcium phosphates (Ca X P) and(or) zinc (Zn) were added in a 2 X 2 factorial arrangement to salt + trace minerals for ewes 7 mo prepartum through lactation in Exp. 1 and to salt only for ewes 3 mo prepartum through lactation in Exp. 2. The diets fed were estimated to contain 23 and 28 mg Zn/kg dry diet (ppm), respectively, and .08 and .05 ppm Se. Large variations (up to fivefold) were found in SMM intake per month between replicates and from month-to-month within treatment; thus, monthly variations of up to sevenfold occurred in Zn and Se intakes of supplemented groups. There were no significant treatment effects on SMM intake. Small but significant Zn treatment effects were detected for plasma and wool Zn of ewes and lambs, but all values were in the normal range. There was no significant treatment effect on plasma alkaline phosphatase activity. In Exp. 2, erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity was significantly lower in all treatment groups compared with a Se-supplemented control group but only rare occurrences of subclinical muscular dystrophy were found. There was no significant treatment effect on GSH-Px activity, whole blood Se in ewes and lambs or plasma creatine phosphokinase activity in lambs. These results indicate large animal and seasonal variability in SMM intake and no significant treatment effects of Ca X P on SMM intake or on Zn and Se status. Zinc addition to SMM had no effect on Se status.  相似文献

Comparison of the root system growth and water transport of southern pine species after planting in different root-zone environments is needed to guide decisions regarding when, and what species to plant. Evaluation of how seed source affects root system responses to soil conditions will allow seed sources to be matched to planting conditions. The root growth and hydraulic conductivity of three sources each of shortleaf, loblolly and longleaf pine seedlings were evaluated for 28 days in a seedling growth system that simulated the planting environment. Across species, an increase in root-zone temperature alleviated limitations to root growth caused by water stress. In the coldest temperature, longleaf pine maintained a higher hydraulic conductivity compared to shortleaf and loblolly pine. Without water limitation, the root growth and hydraulic conductivity of shortleaf and loblolly pine were superior to that of longleaf pine, but as water availability decreased, the root growth of longleaf pine surpassed that of loblolly pine. Hydraulic conductivities of the seed sources differed, and differences were attributed to either new root growth, or an increase in the efficiency of the root system to transport water.  相似文献
