Effect of temperature and compression on the mechanical behavior of steam-treated wood 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The mechanical behavior of steamed spruce wood changes dramatically with compression along the grain, the change being much more moderate perpendicular to the grain. The stiffness decrement due to increased temperature is greatest in the tangential material direction. The stiffness decrement due to compression is greatest along the grain. Compression to 80% compressive strain at 131°C inverts the order of the material directions regarding stiffness, the stiffness being the least along the grain. Plastic strain due to compression is greater at higher temperatures. The compression-induced decrement of stiffness along the grain is greater at higher temperatures, but the off-axis decrement of stiffness is less at higher temperatures. 相似文献

The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) kinase inhibitors gefitinib and erlotinib are effective treatments for lung cancers with EGFR activating mutations, but these tumors invariably develop drug resistance. Here, we describe a gefitinib-sensitive lung cancer cell line that developed resistance to gefitinib as a result of focal amplification of the MET proto-oncogene. inhibition of MET signaling in these cells restored their sensitivity to gefitinib. MET amplification was detected in 4 of 18 (22%) lung cancer specimens that had developed resistance to gefitinib or erlotinib. We find that amplification of MET causes gefitinib resistance by driving ERBB3 (HER3)-dependent activation of PI3K, a pathway thought to be specific to EGFR/ERBB family receptors. Thus, we propose that MET amplification may promote drug resistance in other ERBB-driven cancers as well. 相似文献

Setting aside parcels of land is the main conservation strategy to reduce the rate of biodiversity loss worldwide. Because
funding for biological conservation is limited, it is important to distinguish the most efficient ways to use it. Here, we
assess implications of alternative measures to conserve biodiversity in managed boreal forest landscapes. We calculated four
alternative spatio-temporal scenarios and compared these to the current management regime over 100-year time period. In the
alternative scenarios, a fixed amount of funding was invested in (1) permanent large reserves (each tens of ha in size), (2)
permanent small reserves (each a few ha in size), (3) temporary small reserves (based on 10-year contracts with private land
owners), and (4) green-tree retention (small groups of trees retained on clear-cuts). To assess biodiversity implications,
we used habitat suitability indices to calculate overall habitat availability for five groups of red-listed and habitat-specific
species associated with decaying spruce logs. The possibilities for timber harvests did not differ among the scenarios, but
biodiversity performance was different. The scenarios with permanent reserves tended to outperform other scenarios, suggesting
that conservation policies based on permanent reserves are the most cost-efficient in the long term. Results, however, varied
among time scales and species groups. In the short term, a strategy of investment in temporary small reserves was the most
efficient. Habitat for species associated with old spruce dead-wood and preferring shade was rare throughout all simulations,
and therefore, it is likely that these species cannot be sustained in managed forests. Species that live on fresh dead-wood
and are associated with forest edges coped well in all scenarios suggesting that such species will persist in managed landscapes
without additional conservation efforts. Explicit definition of conservation objectives and time frames for conservation action
are thus prerequisites for successful conservation planning. 相似文献

The effects of soil processes, related to the oxidation of sulphide sediments, on heavy metal concentrations in the soil and soil solution were investigated in a Norway spruce stand on a fine-textured, acidic soil rich in sulphates located on the isostatic land-uplift western coast of Finland. The age of the soil is ca. 300–400 years, and the soil texture is silt and till. The chemical properties of the soil and soil solution clearly reflected the formation of acid sulphate (AS) soil. Compared to background reference values for podzolic coniferous forest soil, the pH of the soil solution in the mineral soil (20–40 cm depth) was very low, and the Al, Fe and S concentrations extremely high. The Zn and Ni concentrations in the soil solution were also strongly elevated, and similar to the concentrations reported close to anthropogenic heavy-metal emission sources. The concentrations of Cd and Cu were also frequently elevated. In contrast, the acidity and metal concentrations of the soil solution sampled in the organic layer were not elevated. Similarly, exchangeable Zn and Ni concentrations were also elevated in the mineral soil, but not in the organic layer. Because Norway spruce has a very superficial rooting system and the zone with exceptionally high metal concentrations did not extend up to the topmost soil layers, sulphide-oxidation derived soil acidification is not likely to pose a serious threat to forest ecosystems growing on this type of site. Despite the elevated concentrations of protons and many metals in the mineral soil and soil solution (20–40 cm), the nutrient status of the spruce stand was satisfactory and the general health of the stand has been reported to be relatively good. 相似文献

The maximum light use efficiency (LUE?=?gross primary production (GPP)/absorbed photosynthetic photon flux density (aPPFD)) of plant canopies has been reported to vary spatially and some of this variation has previously been attributed to plant species differences. The canopy nitrogen concentration [N] can potentially explain some of this spatial variation. However, the current paradigm of the N-effect on photosynthesis is largely based on the relationship between photosynthetic capacity (A(max)) and [N], i.e., the effects of [N] on photosynthesis rates appear under high PPFD. A maximum LUE-[N] relationship, if it existed, would influence photosynthesis in the whole range of PPFD. We estimated maximum LUE for 14 eddy-covariance forest sites, examined its [N] dependency and investigated how the [N]-maximum LUE dependency could be incorporated into a GPP model. In the model, maximum LUE corresponds to LUE under optimal environmental conditions before light saturation takes place (the slope of GPP vs. PPFD under low PPFD). Maximum LUE was higher in deciduous/mixed than in coniferous sites, and correlated significantly with canopy mean [N]. Correlations between maximum LUE and canopy [N] existed regardless of daily PPFD, although we expected the correlation to disappear under low PPFD when LUE was also highest. Despite these correlations, including [N] in the model of GPP only marginally decreased the root mean squared error. Our results suggest that maximum LUE correlates linearly with canopy [N], but that a larger body of data is required before we can include this relationship into a GPP model. Gross primary production will therefore positively correlate with [N] already at low PPFD, and not only at high PPFD as is suggested by the prevailing paradigm of leaf-level A(max)-[N] relationships. This finding has consequences for modelling GPP driven by temporal changes or spatial variation in canopy [N]. 相似文献

Abstract Five old shrub rose taxa were studied in field experiments in northern Finland during the years 1993–1999. The plant material was micro-propagated from woody plants selected for their ornamental value and hardiness for northern areas of Finland. The observations in the experiments were based on phenological monitoring and survey of plant success. The results revealed significant differences in the success of the different rose genotypes, and the most valuable genotypes were identified. Micropropagation was successfully used as a propagation method and these in vitro propagated roses grew naturally under harsh field conditions. The Rosa ‘Tornedal’ origins, R. ‘Poppius’ and R. ‘Sipi’ were ranked the most suitable cultivars for northern landscaping. Overall, all of the studied roses succeeded fairly well. 相似文献

The concepts and principles in characterization of seedling performance potential are evaluated, the requirements of tests are discussed, and the guideline criteria presented in selected morphological and physiological tests are assessed. Further discussion follows concerning the development of proper concepts as a necessity for developing clear and operational devices, and problems in making predictions of survival and growth. When using a seedling performance potential test, the following features should be taken into an account: basis of assessment; empirical or mechanistic ability to accommodate changes in seedlings prediction span rules and scale of measurement possibility to use in statistical quality control applicability to different methods of characterization; single or sample sorting design for site specific conditions applicability for quality control during seedling raising in the nursery suitability to repeated sampling Clear practical requirements for a test are: yielding final results immediately, simple to understand and use at all levels of operation, inexpensive, accessible to all potential users, reliable, and of diagnostic value. Strong practicability of the performance potential tests require use of rigorous statistical analysis to find seedling tests with adequate prediction ability. 相似文献

More information on the habitat requirements of lamprey is needed to improve measures aiming at rehabilitation of lamprey populations. Knowledge on habitat requirements of subyearling lampreys is especially scarce. We studied substrate selection by subyearling lamprey during the first three months after hatching using aquarium experiments. Differences in substrate selection by different‐sized larvae older than one year and the substrate depth selection by large larvae were also studied. Prolarvae of an average total length (TL) of 6.9 mm actively selected substrates with existing holes. When lampreys reached TL of over 8.0 mm, they started to select substrates which enabled them to construct a burrow. Lampreys of that size avoided coarse sand and gravel without fine material. Natural gravel with fine material was a frequently selected burrowing substrate during the 10‐week experiment suggesting its importance for subyearling lampreys. Substrates where very fine sand prevailed were the most selected soft sediments by subyearling larvae. Larvae older than one year did not select clay as a burrowing substrate. Medium (TL 70–98 mm) and large (TL 110–146 mm) larvae preferred coarse organic matter to fine sand. Larvae older than one year (TL 80–110 mm) preferred the thickest layer of soft substrate (10 cm) available to thinner layers. 相似文献
