Abstract –  Seasonal variation in light intensity has strong impacts on invertebrate and vertebrate habitat selection creating trade-offs between foraging gain and risk of death. Diel vertical migration (DVM) has received a particularly interest, but multitrophic level studies in lakes under polar light regime have not been conducted. Here, we examined habitat selection of pelagic zooplankton, planktivores and piscivores in subarctic Lake Muddusjärvi with polymorphic whitefish ( Coregonus lavaretus (L.)). Seasonal change in light was hypothesized to be the most important abiotic factor inducing DVM, whereas predation was considered as an ultimate biotic factor. During period of mid-night sun in June, no DVM was observed at any trophic level, whereas during normal day and night light in September planktivores and zooplankton migrated. DVM was top-down controlled, where piscivorous brown trout ( Salmo trutta L.) used pelagic habitat continuously inducing DVM of its main prey, pelagic whitefish morph, which cascaded to reverse DVM of zooplankton. Top-down control of lower trophic level DVMs by piscivores might be more general pattern in lakes than previously considered.  相似文献

Density and biomass estimates of pelagic fish are essential to understand food web interactions and ecosystem functioning. We conducted surveys of six subarctic lakes for assessing both mono‐ and polymorphic whitefish Coregonus lavaretus (L.) populations. Monomorphic whitefish lakes were inhabited by a habitat and diet generalist, large sparsely rakered (LSR) morph, whereas polymorphic whitefish lakes had a littoral benthivorous LSR morph, a pelagic planktivorous densely rakered (DR) morph and in two cases a benthivorous small sparsely rakered (SSR) morph inhabiting the profundal zone. In addition, an introduced specialist zooplanktivore, vendace Coregonus albula (L.), inhabited one of the monomorphic lakes. Hydroacoustics was found to be an appropriate method for estimating coregonid densities and biomasses in large and deep polymorphic lakes occupied by the planktivorous DR morph or vendace, but only during dark nights in autumn. The suitability of hydroacoustic assessment for benthivorous LSR and SSR morphs was low, especially in polymorphic whitefish lakes due to their preference for near‐bottom habitat or shallow areas not sampled with hydroacoustics. The pelagic density of DR morph varied from 330 to 1780 fish·ha?1 and biomass from 1.4 to 13.3 kg·ha?1 in polymorphic whitefish lakes, whereas corresponding estimates for LSR morph were 10–320 fish·ha?1 and 0.5–8.4 kg·ha?1 in monomorphic whitefish lakes. In general, polymorphism tended to increase the density and biomass of whitefish in the pelagic area compared with monomorphic systems.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to compare model-based approaches inthe prediction of timber assortment recovery with bucking simulationbased on detailed stem data. A correction function for the totallength of saw log fragments and two optional saw log reductionmodels, that is, the MELA96 version and MELA05 version, wereapplied. In the bucking simulation, the volumes by timber assortmentswere calculated using a bucking-to-value simulator. The predictionof saw log recoveries varied between the bucking simulationand different versions of saw log reduction models. The levelof the reduction from the MELA96 version was at the same levelas from the bucking simulation where defects were taken intoaccount, but the saw log reduction had a very low variance dueto a small amount of independent variables. The saw log reductionof the MELA05 version included more variation although the levelof the reductions was higher and the variation did not meetwith the bucking simulation. As a conclusion, the model-basedapproaches seem applicable at least for the prediction of sawlog recovery in the large area forest inventories where thevariance of the standwise timber assortment recoveries neednot be predicted.  相似文献

In this study, the response of Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Acacia mangium kraft pulp to different options of ECF bleaching was investigated. Oxygen-delignified pulps of both species having similar kappa number (c.a. 12) were used. Both the pulps were prebleached using conventional ClO2 stage (D0), combined use of ClO2 and O3 (DZ), hot acid treatment before D0 (AhotD0) and hot acid treatment before (DZ) i.e., Ahot(DZ), hot ClO2 treatment (DHT) and Ahot followed by DHT (AhotDHT). All prebleached pulps were finally bleached to 90%+ ISO brightness using D1 option. The overall benefits of other options were not considerable compared to D0 and (DZ). From the ClO2 consumption point of view, for a certain species, the option Ahot(DZ) was the best. Instead of D1 in final bleaching, pressurized hydrogen peroxide (PO) was also investigated in the case of D0 and (DZ) prebleached pulps. (PO)-bleached pulp produced higher brightness stability but lower viscosity compared to D1.  相似文献

Dependence of the in situ acoustic target strength (TS) of smelt (Osmerus eperlanus (L.)) on the total fish length (L) was estimated from TS measurements made with a split-beam 120 kHz echo sounder with reference to fish length–frequency distributions in trawl catches. The studies were conducted in the eutrophic and turbid Lake Hiidenvesi in southern Finland. Smelt dominated the catches-in-number with proportions at different sampling stations ranging from 91.8 to 100%. A TS–length equation of the form TS = alog L − b was fitted through the modes in the TS-distributions and in the respective fish length distributions. The estimated model (±parameter standard error) was TS = 23.4 (±2.24)log10 L − 68.7 (±1.82). With a pre-defined slope of 20, the fitted equation was TS = 20 log10 L − 65.9 (±0.23). The estimated day–night difference in TS–length relationship was not significant (t-test, p = 0.37).  相似文献

We present a decision support tool for guiding the selection of marked stands based on airborne laser scanning (ALS) data. We describe three stages, namely (1) wall-to-wall mapping of the stands matured for cutting using low-density ALS data; (2) tree-level inventory of these stands using high-density ALS data and (3) theoretical bucking of the imputed tree stems to produce detailed information on their characteristics. We tested them in a Scots pine dominated boreal forest area in Eastern Finland, where 79 sample plots were measured in the field. The detection of the stands matured for cutting had a success rate of 95% and our results demonstrated a further potential to limit the result towards stands dominated by certain species by means of intensity values derived from the low-density ALS data. The applied single-tree detection and estimation chain produced detailed tree-level information and realistic diameter distributions, yet the detection was highly emphasised on the dominant tree layer. The error levels in the estimates were generally less than standard deviations of the field attributes. Finally, plot-level accumulations of saw-log volumes were found rather similar, whether the input was based on the imputed tree data or trees measured in the field. The results are considered useful for ranking the stands based on their properties, whether the aim in the wood procurement is to focus on certain species or to select stands suitable for production needs.  相似文献

Knowledge of predator–prey dynamics is essential to understand ecosystem functioning. Quantification of such interactions is important for fisheries management, in particular in the case of stocking programmes. Here, food consumption rates (FCR) were quantified for wild and stocked piscivorous brown trout, Salmo trutta L., in three subarctic lakes with contrasting coregonid (Coregonus spp.) prey communities, using the Wisconsin and the Elliott–Hurley bioenergetic models. FCR was highest for stocked brown trout in lakes with the lowest predator densities, and lowest for wild brown trout. Although FCR estimate may vary somewhat depending on the specific model used, such tools are imperative for the proper impact assessment of brown trout stocking programmes and for the provision of advice on optimal stocking densities.  相似文献
