The fabrication and characterization of a glass containing a regular parallel array of submicrometer channels or capillaries are described. The capillaries are arranged in a two-dimensional hexagonal close packing configuration with channel diameters as small as 33 nanometers and packing densities as high as 3 x 10(10) channels per square centimeter. The high-temperature stability of the nanochannel glass array is well suited as a host or template for the formation of quantum confined semiconductor structures or as a mask for massively parallel patterned lithographic applications.  相似文献

Conservation problems typically involve groups with competing objectives and strategies. Taking effective conservation action requires identifying dependencies between competing strategies and determining which action optimally achieves the appropriate conservation goals given those dependencies. We show how several real-world conservation problems can be modeled game-theoretically. Three types of problems drive our analysis: multi-national conservation cooperation, management of common-pool resources, and games against nature. By revealing the underlying structure of these and other problems, game-theoretic models suggest potential solutions that are often invisible to the usual management protocol: decision followed by monitoring, feedback and revised decisions. The kind of adaptive management provided by the game-theoretic approach therefore complements existing adaptive management methodologies.  相似文献

The effects of intra-articular injection, on two occasions, 3 weeks apart, of the contrast agent Urografin on the cytological and biochemical characteristics of synovial fluid (SF) were examined in two studies in dogs. The first study provided baseline data in two non-medicated dogs. The second study used a cross-over design whereby 4 dogs received a 7-day oral treatment with either a placebo or meloxicam (0.2 mg/kg body weight daily) with a washout period of 3 weeks, in order to determine the effect of this new non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) on the response to Urografin injection. SF samples were collected under general anaesthesia prior to and at 24 and 72 h after each Urografin injection. The volume, relative viscosity, white blood cell count and concentrations of protein, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and hyaluronic acid of these samples were determined. The results from both studies indicate that intra-articular injection of Urografin provoked a mild local transient inflammatory response, the most dramatic evidence of which was an increase in the white blood cell count in the SF after 24 h. In the second study, comparison of the synovial fluid measurements of the placebo-treated dogs at 24 h after Urografin injection with those prior to injection revealed significant increases in SF volume, white blood cell count, protein concentration and LDH activity and a significant reduction in relative viscosity. At 72 h after injection, only the white blood cell count and relative viscosity were significantly different from the pre-injection values. All of these measurements were, however, associated with high coefficients of variation, which must be taken into account in assessing the usefulness of the model for drug-testing purposes. Nevertheless, the administration of meloxicam significantly reduced the SF volume and white blood cell count at 24 h relative to the effects of concurrent placebo treatment. The general health status of the animals was not disturbed at any time as assessed by clinical and haematological observations. No adverse reactions were observed.Abbreviations LDH lactate dehydrogenase - NSAID non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug - SF synovial fluid - WBC white blood cell count  相似文献

We hypothesized that the inclusion of flaxseed in the diets of lactating dairy cows will increase urinary and fecal concentrations of the lignans, secoisolariciresinol diglycoside (SDG), enterolactone and enterodiol, reduce intrafollicular concentrations of IGF-I and estradiol, and subsequently reduce estradiol and oxytocin receptor expression in the endometrium. To test this hypothesis, 27 cycling, lactating Holstein cows were assigned to 1 of 3 diets supplemented with saturated fatty acids (SAT), flax (FLX), or sunflower (SUN) seed. Rations were formulated to provide 750 g supplemental fat/cow/d in all dietary groups. Ovulation (Day 0) was synchronized, and 5 d later, follicles>8 mm were ablated by an ultrasound-guided procedure in all cows. Samples of blood (Days 0 to 14), follicular fluid (Day 5 and 15), endometrium (Day 15), as well as urine and feces were collected in a subset of the animals. The fecal concentrations of SDG and enterodiol were higher (P<0.05) in cows fed FLX than in those fed SAT or SUN. Enterodiol increased (P<0.05) in urine samples of cows fed FLX, compared to those of cows fed SUN. However, follicular estradiol concentrations on Day 5 and 15 and endometrial concentrations of estradiol and oxytocin receptors on Day 15 did not differ among the dietary groups. Mean plasma progesterone concentrations were higher (P<0.05) in cows fed FLX and SUN than in those fed SAT. In summary, a diet supplemented with flaxseed increased the concentrations of SDG and enterodiol in feces, as hypothesized, but did not alter intrafollicular concentrations of IGF-I or estradiol, or endometrial populations of oxytocin or estrogen receptors in lactating dairy cows.  相似文献

The antipyretic efficacy of meloxicam was evaluated in a feline endotoxin model using a replicated change-over design. Twelve adult cats of both sexes were allocated at random to three experimental groups. At 30 min prior to the intravenous (i.v.) endotoxin challenge (0.5 µg/kg body weight(b.w.)), 2 animals in each group received an i.v. injection of 0.1, 0.3 or 0.5 mg meloxicam/kg b.w. and the two remaining animals in each group received physiological saline. In a second phase, 21 days later, the meloxicam/placebo treatment was exchanged within each group. The rectal temperature and scores for general demeanour were determined at 30-min intervals from before dosing to 300 min after the endotoxin challenge. Haematological parameters were analysed before and 60 min after administration of endotoxin. The results indicated a significant dose-dependent antipyretic response to meloxicam after endotoxin challenge. The antipyretic response in the medium- and high-dose meloxicam groups did not differ significantly, but both were significantly different from the low-dosage group. The individual effects of endotoxin on general demeanour were rather variable but meloxicam tended to have a beneficial effect. Endotoxin induced a reduction in the white blood cell count but this was not influenced by meloxicam. It was concluded that the pyretic endotoxin model is very suitable for studying new NSAIDs in cats and that the optimum single dose of meloxicam in this model was 0.3 mg/kg b.w.Abbreviations AUC area under the curve - b.w. body weight - i.v. intravenous - LPS lipopolysaccharide - MCV mean corpuscular volume - NSAID non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug - WBC white blood cell count  相似文献

Nutritional diarrhoea was induced in male Friesian calves by the addition of sucrose to their milk replacer diet in two experiments. In each study the calves were paired on the basis of the severity of the diarrhoea and each of a pair of calves was assigned at random to receive a course of six intramuscular injections (5 ml/50 kg body weight) of either a placebo or Buscopan compositum (morning and evening) over a period of 3 days. In an initial study, which involved 10 pairs of calves, daily faecal and urine output were collected separately for each calf on the day prior to the start of treatment and on each day of the 3 treatment days. The daily output of fresh faeces was reduced as a result of treatment with Buscopan compositum and the overall reduction for the complete 3 day period was 18.7%. This was also reflected in a reduced output of faecal water (18.4%) during the same period. The digestibility of the dry matter component of the diet was significantly increased by 5.8%.In a second experiment, which involved 24 pairs of calves, faecal samples were collected daily, commencing before initiation of treatment, for determination of faecal dry matter content. The pattern of change in the faecal dry matter content during the course of the study differed clearly for the two treatments. Faecal dry matter increased from its lowest level (11.7%), immediately prior to first treatment, to its maximum (21.8%) on the second day of treatment in the Buscopan compositum-treated calves. In the placebo-treated calves, however, the faecal dry matter content increased gradually until the end of the study, at which time it was still 9.8% lower than that of the Buscopan compositum-treated calves on the second day of treatment. The results of these studies show that Buscopan compositum has a useful role to play in the management of nutritionally induced calf scour.  相似文献

The content of zearalenone and its metabolites in urine and tissue samples from pigs fed zearalenone-contaminated oats was established by analytical methods combining solid-phase extraction cleanup of the samples with highly selective liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)/MS detection. Investigation of the urine samples revealed that approximately 60% of zearalenone was transformed in vivo to alpha-zearalenol and its epimer beta-zearalenol in a mean ratio of 3:1. Zeranol and taleranol as further metabolites could only be detected in trace amounts. Zearalanone was identified at considerable concentrations, though only in a couple of samples. In contrast, liver samples contained predominantly alpha-zearalenol, and to a minor extent beta-zearalenol and zearalenone, with a mean ratio of alpha-/beta-zearalenol of 2.5:1, while zeranol, taleranol, or zearalanone could not be identified in any of the investigated samples. The degree of glucoronidation was established for zearalenone as 27% in urine and 62% in liver; for alpha-zearalenol as 88% in urine and 77% in liver; and for beta-zearalenol as 94% in urine and 29% in liver. Analyses of muscle tissue revealed relatively high amounts of nonglucuronidated zeranol and alpha-zearalenol together with traces of taleranol and zearalenone, indicating that the metabolism of zearalenone and its metabolites is not restricted to hepatic and gastrointestinal metabolic pathways.  相似文献

We investigated the implications of early maturation in a central Ontario population of pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus) by comparing the growth trajectory, body condition, lipid to body weight ratio and past growth history of mature and immature females through the 1992 growing season. Pumpkinseeds were sampled from Beloporine Lake from May 28 to July 24 and on November 20, just prior to freeze-up of the lake. Prior growth history and length at age were determined by backcalculation from scale annuli. Nearly all females age 3 and older had matured in 1992, so we focused on age 2 females (22% mature). Females that matured at age 2 were significantly larger at the end of their first year of life than those that did not mature at age 2, although there was no significant difference between groups in the prior year's growth rate. The mature age 2 females were significantly larger than immatures, at the beginning and end of their third growing season, but not during the June 2 - July 19 breeding season. The condition factor of mature females was higher than that of immature females on all but one collection date. However, the mean somatic lipid-to-body weight ratio was higher in immature females on all sample dates and significantly higher over the grwing season. We conclude that the costs of early maturation include lack of length and weight gain during the breeding season, and loss of stored lipid. The latter may be associated with increased overwinter mortality.  相似文献

Maize (Zea mays L.) is grown on 15 million ha in eastern and southern Africa. Several diseases are of common occurrence in the region and regularly result in significant yield losses. A collaborative regional disease nursery (REGNUR) project was initiated in 1998 to identify and increase access to disease resistant germplasm, generate and disseminate information on disease and insect resistance sources, and facilitate the development of resistant cultivars by project partners. A diallel among 12 elite inbred lines was formed with the specific objective of evaluating the combining ability of these inbred lines for grain yield and resistance to seven diseases. The trial was grown at six sites in 2001. Results showed that both general (GCA) and specific combining ability effects were significant for most diseases. On the average, GCA accounted for 69% of resistance to diseases and only 37% of variation for grain yield. Correlations between GCA effects for disease scores were generally non-significant, implying that it is possible to pyramid genes for disease resistance in inbred lines. This underscores the need for screening for resistance to prevailing diseases using artificial inoculation or reliable hot-spots. Based on GCA effects for grain yield and across diseases, P12 and P6 were the best inbred lines. The crosses P4 × P9 (6.7 t ha−1) and P4 × P12 (6.9 t ha−1) were the best hybrids in the earlier maturity group, while P3 × P9 (8.3 t ha−1) and P2 × P8 (7.4 t ha−1) were the best hybrids in the late maturity group.  相似文献
