Contributions to the knowledge of conifer aphid fauna in Turkey and their zoogeographical distribution

The Aphidoidea (Homoptera) has 29 species which attack coniferous trees in Turkey. The family Aphididae has 25 (Aphidinae, 1; Lachninae, 22; Mindarinae, 2) species and the Adelgidae, 4. The tribe Cinarini in Lachninae has alone 22 species most of which are important. Especially Cinara cedri Mimeur on Cedrus libani and C. pilicornis (Hartig) on Picea spp. are harmful species. Schizolachnus pineti (Fabricius) is also very important. An Eastern Palearctic species in the tribe Macrosiphini in Aphidinae, Elatobium momii (Shinji), is numerous on Abies bornmülleriana in Bursa-Uluda forests. Pineus orientalis (Dreyfus) in the family of Adelgidae (Chermesidae) is the most destructive in our Picea orientalis forests in Artvin area (Eastern Black-Sea Section). 21 species out of 29 aphids on coniferous trees are of European origin; only 4 are Mediterranean, 2 Caucasus and Turkistan, one Eastern Palearctic and one of Cosmopolitan origin.     

Comparison of Activated Sludge Technologies by Particle Size Analysis

This paper analyses the influence of activated sludge technologies on the Particle Size Distribution (PSD) of urban wastewater treatment plants operating under real conditions. The activated sludge treatment systems selected for the analysis are the most widely used in wastewater treatment installations: (a) double step activated sludge, (b) medium load activated sludge, (c) prolonged aeration, and (d) membrane bioreactors The main quality parameters (suspended solids, turbidity, and COD) and PSD in the influent and effluent of each different activated sludge treatment were analyzed during 1?year. The PSD was fitted using the power law ( $ n\left( {{d_{\text{P}}}} \right) = \frac{{\partial {\text{N}}\left( {{d_{\text{p}}}} \right)}}{{\partial {d_{\text{p}}}}} = A \cdot d_{\text{p}}^{{ - b \cdot {\text{Log}}\left( {{d_{\text{p}}}} \right)}} $ ) obtaining coefficients A and b to define the particle distribution. Mathematical correlations between this coefficients and the rest of parameters studied were found $ \left( {\matrix{ {{\text{SS}} = {0}{.0126} \cdot {A^{{{0}{.781}}}},} &{{\text{Turbidity}} = 15.5814 + 1.164 \cdot {{10}^3} \cdot A{,}} &{{\text{COD}} = \frac{{1}}{{{0}{.0133} + \cdot \frac{{{49}{.85}}}{\text{A}}}}} \\ }<!end array> } \right) $ . The relation with the average particle size by mass was also found, ( $ {d_{\text{pma}}} = - 11.6502 + \frac{{50.4265}}{b} $ ). Moreover, a relation between PSD and the particle elimination efficiency of the secondary treatment was study, ( $ \eta = 0.1434 - \frac{{0.5602}}{{{A_{\text{rel}}}}} + \frac{{0.7490}}{{{b_{\text{rel}}}}} $ ). Finally, the particulate matter nature was assessed by SEM-EDX. It can be concluded that membrane bioreactor is the technology that produces the best water quality effluent due to physic process of particle separation by ultrafiltration membrane technology.     

Estimation of roaming dog populations in Timor Leste

The continued spread of rabies through the eastern islands of Indonesia poses a risk of rabies introduction to Timor Leste. To prepare for such an incursion and to undertake surveillance activities, the size and distribution of the roaming dog population needs to be estimated. We present the results of the first such surveys ever undertaken in Timor Leste.     

The <Emphasis Type="Italic">Betula</Emphasis> aphids of Turkey

To date, about 400 aphid species have been recorded in Turkey (see References). However, this is the first paper which 3 aphid species determined in 3 genera on Betula spp. in Turkey. These species, namely Calaphis flava Mordvilko, Callipterinella calliptera (Hartig) and Euceraphis punctipennis (Zetterstedt) all belong to the family: Aphididae, subfamily: Myzocallinae, tribe: Calaphini and none of the species has previously been recorded in aphid fauna lists on Betula spp. in Turkey. Their synonyms, morphological characteristics and biological data, supported by literature, were also considered.     

Scale insects of the conifer trees in Turkey and their zoogeographical distribution

In Turkey, 25 species of Coccoidea (Homoptera) are recorded on Conifera tree species. The family Diaspididae has 15, Coccidae 6, Pseudococcidae 3, and Margarodidae 1 species. Specifically, Dynaspidiotus spp. are recorded on Abies, Cedrus, Picea, and Pinus; Leucaspis spp. on Pinus spp.; Carulaspis spp. on Biota, Cupressus, Juniperus, and Thuja; Lepidosaphes spp. on Abies, Biota, Juniperus, and Picea; Coccus spp. on Abies, Cedrus, and Pinus; and Planococcus spp. on Cupressus, Juniperus, and Pinus species. Acanthomytilus cedricola is recorded only on Cedrus spp.; Physokermes piceae on Abies and Picea species; and Marchalina hellenica only on Pinus species. Two species are Native, five are Cosmopolitan, 15 are Palaearctic, and 3 are of Mediterranean origin.

Scale insect pests on ornamental plants in urban habitats in Turkey

Ornamental plants play an increasingly important role in urban habitats in Turkey. Scale insects are a serious pest group that attack ornamental plants. In this study, a total of 67 species of Coccoidea belonging to 7 families, which are harmful to ornamental plants, are given in Tables 1, 2, and 3. These tables are based on the authors data and on bibliographic sources. The most numerous families are Diaspididae (31), Coccidae (23), Pseudococcidae (7), Eriococcidae (3), and the Margarodidae, Kermesidae and Astereolecaniidae (1). Twenty-one of these species are harmful to flowering fruit and deciduous trees, 5 species are harmful to conifers, while 15 species are important orchard pests. Their hosts and distributions are also taken into consideration.
