In 1977 a silvopastoral system was started in a 8.5 há farm with the typical soil characteristics of the coastal ranges of Southern Chile, planted with Radiata pine (Pinus radiata D.Don) 2/0, with a 2.5 × 7 m spacing. The sheep management system began in June 1979.The stocking rate varied from 6 to 8 sheep per há, the ewe breeds were Romney, Suffolk × Romney, with Suffolk or Romney rams. During the 1979–1982 period ratational grazing in four paddocks with native pasture and subterranean was used. Starting from June 1982 pasture area had increased to 12 há.Forage was not conserved. Overnight, sheep were kept loose on a slatted floor sheep house.D.M./há availability, sheep and lamb weight, reproduction and growth of lambs, show that the system is feasible and practical. The 1980 production was 214 kg of live weight/há; 248kg/há in 1981; 171 for 1982, and 207 for 1983. During these years the mean wool production was between 3.5 to 4 kg per sheep.The economic results f the system are attractive as to improve farmers' income, also preventing erosion, allowing a means to promote development of an important area in Southern Chile.The research project is still in progress. 相似文献

Over the last few decades, important advances have been made in understanding of host–parasitoid relations and their applications to biological pest control. Not only has the number of agent species increased, but new manipulation techniques for natural enemies have also been empirically introduced, particularly in greenhouse crops. This makes biocontrol more complex, requiring a new mathematical modeling approach appropriate for the optimization of the release of agents. The present paper aimed at filling this gap by the development of a temperature- and stage-dependent dynamic mathematical model of the host–parasitoid system with an improved functional response. The model is appropriate not only for simulation analysis of the efficiency of biocontrol agents, but also for the application of optimal control methodology for the optimal timing of agent releases, and for the consideration of economic implications. Based on both laboratory and greenhouse trials, the model was validated and fitted to the data of Chelonus oculator (F.) (Hym.: Braconidae) as a biological control agent against the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua Hübner (Lep.: Noctuidae). The germination of Casuarina equisetifolia Forst seed lots is low (40–50%) even when freshly collected. This study aimed at upgrading the germination performance by
removing non-germinable seeds using petroleum flotation technique. Seeds collected from 19 individual trees in seedling seed
orchards in India were assessed using X-ray to determine the proportion of different seed lot fractions. The feasibility of
petroleum ether as a separation medium was tested. Morphological characters of floating and sunken seeds were further studied
using image analysis technique to examine their effects on the separation efficiency. The X-ray analysis revealed a large
quantity of shrivelled, empty and insect-damaged seeds, altogether accounting 50%, which were the causes of low percentage
germination of un-graded seed lots (48%). Petroleum flotation resulted in 90% germination in the sunken fraction and 4% in
the floating fraction. The separation was distinct for most seed lots, except few seed lots that had relatively low germination
in the sunken fractions and more than 10% germination in the floating fractions. As a whole, petroleum flotation appears to
be a feasible technique to upgrade the germination of C. equisetifolia seed lots, and its efficacy is influenced by wing surface area, seed density and wing quotient of filled and empty seeds. 相似文献

The effect of orientation, location, year, and pruning treatment on mean acorn mass in two open woodland experimental locations (Huelva, South-Western Spain) of Holm Oak (Quercus ilex L. subsp. ballota [Desf.] Samp.) was analyzed during 2001–2006. Data were analyzed by using a mixed linear model, where the covariates were tree size parameters (circumference at 80 cm height, crown size), topographic position (wet index and flow length), intraspecific competition, total acorn crops per tree (weight and number), and climatic parameters. Average estimated acorn mass was 3.17 g acorn?1 in the Calañas location and 4.12 g acorn?1 in the San Bartolomé location, with significant differences between locations, among individual trees and across years. Acorns from the south sides of trees were significantly heavier than those at other positions. The effect of pruning treatment and the interactions location × treatment and treatment × year were not significant. Our study provides no evidence that pruning affects acorn mass. None of the analyzed covariates related to tree size, topographic position and intraspecific competition explained the difference among trees, suggesting that heritable factors play an important role. Specific climatic parameters during September, the most important month for acorn growth, may explain the effects of year and location × year on acorn mass. Summary The behaviour of a small group of wood fibers of Sitka spruce during tensile loading is investigated. The load-extension curves for both early and late wood fibers consist of three distinct segments. The first segment is almost a straight line, at some stage of loading a yield point is observed. Beyond this point the specimen becomes less stiff and undergoes a large, mainly irreversible deformation. As the load is increased further, the curve exhibits the third segment showed by a significant change in slope. These curves look different from those obtained on thick specimens. In this respect, the behaviour of a thin wood specimen subjected to cyclic type tensile loading along its longitudinal direction is also illustrated. Based on wood microstructure, a model is presented to interpret the evolution of the Young's modulus of a wood fiber during tensile loading. The model considers wood as an assembly of cylindrical fibers pasted together in a longitudinal direction. We have assumed the cell wall to comprise only an S2 layer made of a composite material consisting of a lignin and hemicellulose matrix reinforced by helical microfibrils along the fiber. Furthermore, it is assumed that the microfibril angle a in the S2 layer is not uniform along the fiber axis and matrix degradation occurs in the zones where the microfibril angles are bigger. Seeds of Juniperus procera collected from five provenances across its geographic range in Ethiopia were subjected to cold-moist stratification at 5°C
or 10°C for 6–12 weeks. The effect of aqueous smoke solution in overcoming the light requirement for germination, and the
potential of visible (VIS) and near infrared reflectance (NIR) spectroscopy for sorting sound and insect-damaged seeds were
also investigated. Highly significant differences in germination were detected among provenances (P < 0.0001) and stratification periods (P < 0.0001), but not between temperature regimes (P=0.111). Seeds from the south and southeast distribution ranges had higher percentage germination after 6 weeks of stratification
than seeds collected from north, northwest and central ranges of distribution. The smoke treatment did not affect germination
regardless of whether the seeds were exposed to light. Exposure to light increased germination capacity three fold. Sound
and damaged seeds were distinguished with 90% accuracy using VIS + NIR spectroscopy. It can be concluded that dormancy in
juniper seeds varies with provenances, and cold stratification for 6 weeks alleviates dormancy in some seed lots. Tentatively,
smoke treatment seems ineffective in overcoming photo-dormancy in juniper seeds. VIS + NIR spectroscopy has demonstrated a
great potential for sorting damaged seeds, thereby upgrading seed lot purity. 相似文献

Three-year-old saplings of Pinus sylvestris L. were labeled with 13CO2 prior to inoculating the trunk with Ophiostoma brunneo ciliatum, a blue-staining fungus usually associated to Ips sexdentatus. During incubation, half the trees were submitted to a severe drought that decreased photosynthesis and natural 13C content in non-labeled saplings. A large 13C-excess was obtained in wood and phloem, especially in the fractions of soluble proteins, starch and soluble sugars of labeled saplings. Drought increased 13C-excess, due to reduced photosynthesis and smaller dilution of 13C by the addition of newly assimilated 12C. The induced-reaction zones in inoculated saplings displayed large total C (58 g 100 g?1) because of the accumulation of secondary metabolites. They also showed much larger 13C-excess than any other compartment: the contribution of stored C to the reaction zones was much higher than that of currently assimilated C. Moreover, drought lowered the contribution of the latter, as shown by the increase of 13C in the reaction zones. We conclude that stored C was readily mobilized for the construction of reaction tissues, and that the contribution of currently assimilated C was only minor. 相似文献

Market-oriented production of gardening crops and cassava (Manihot utilissima) in the dry season is an increasingly frequent practice in Ségou, Mali. Traditionally, these crops are protected from roaming
livestock with the help of dead fences. In order to provide a sustainable alternative to dead fences, the International Centre
for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF) began promoting the use of live fences, living trees planted closely together around
a field plot. This study was conducted with the first farmers to use these live fences. These farmers expressed satisfaction
with the protection offered by the trees and their ability to provide a variety of medicinal, economic, and food products.
The form of land tenure, the social status of farmers within their families, and the availability of labour seem to be important
factors in the decision to test the live fence. This raises questions about the accessibility of this technique and its possible
contribution to the social and economic differentiation of its users.
