- In Panama, shark fisheries were initially developed in the 1980s and progressively increased in production in the 1990s mainly due to the high demand for shark fins and meat from the international Asian market. Since then, and despite the exploitation rate (average 3,514 t year–1) and endangered status of some species, shark fisheries have seldom been studied, and official statistics are general or incomplete and not suitable for the development of appropriate conservation and management strategies.
- To understand the dynamics of shark fisheries in Panama, field surveys were conducted between 2007 and 2009 at several landing ports of small‐scale and industrial fisheries, at fish processing plants and on‐board fishing vessels in Pacific Panama, where most of the fishing vessels of the country operate.
- In general, it was found that the artisanal and industrial fisheries of the Pacific coast of Panama regularly exploit at least 18 species of sharks, which are also being exploited by neighbouring countries in the eastern Pacific, suggesting the importance of coordinated conservation initiatives across the multiple jurisdictions. A large number of the individuals caught were immature, implying a certain level of impact on recruitment rates. This pattern was particularly evident in species such as Sphyrna lewini, for which immature individuals represented at least 99% and 63% of the total catch by small‐scale and industrial fisheries, respectively. Catch per unit of effort analyses showed that Carcharhinus and Sphyrna species were the most exploited (representing ~80% of the catches) by industrial fisheries in Panama between 2006 and 2009, suggesting that fishery management should provide special attention to these groups.
- It is expected that the information presented here provides a baseline to develop new regulations, including the implementation of annual quotas and fishing seasons and the protection of nursery areas, for the long‐term sustainability and conservation of sharks in Panama.

Both unheated (US) and heated (HS) fish silage were evaluated as sole dietary protein sources in an artificial diet for the culture of juvenile abalone Haliotis fulgens . The fish silage was heated to reduce the level of hydrolysis and thereby increase the availability of nutrients. After 140 d of culture, growth rates of abalone fed the US- and HS-containing diets were 16.4 and 19.8 μm/d and were not significantly different despite greater leaching of protein and carbohydrate in the US-containing diet. Growth rates achieved with the US- and HS-containing diets were significantly lower than that achieved by feeding a commercially available diet used as a reference diet. Abalone that were fed the US- and HS-containing diets were then switched to a diet in which two-thirds of the total amount of silage was replaced with fishmeal. At the termination of the experiment, day 217, the abalone originally fed the US and HS diets had composite growth rates of 24.3 and 23.5 μm/d, while abalone that continued to be fed the commercial diet had a growth rate of 18.6 μm/d. Stability of the dry matter of the diets was not related to the level of protein leaching. Fish meal out performs fish silage as a dietary protein source for abalone. The excitatory amino acid domoic acid is the causative agent of amnesic shellfish poisoning in humans. The in vitro effects of domoic acid on rat neonatal brain microglia were compared with E. coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a known activator of microglia mediator release over a 4 to 24 hour observation period. LPS [3 ng/mL] but not domoic acid [1 mM] stimulated a statistically significant increase in TNF-alpha mRNA and protein generation. Furthermore, both LPS and domoic acid did not significantly affect TGF-beta1 gene expression and protein release. Finally, an in vitro exposure of microglia to LPS resulted in statistically significant MMP-9 expression and release, thus extending and confirming our previous observations. However, in contrast, no statistically significant increase in MMP-9 expression and release was observed after domoic acid treatment. Taken together our observations do not support the hypothesis that a short term (4 to 24 hours) in vitro exposure to domoic acid, at a concentration toxic to neuronal cells, activates rat neonatal microglia and the concomitant release of the pro-inflammatory mediators tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and matrix metalloproteinases-9 (MMP-9), as well as the anti-inflammatory cytokine transforming growth factor beta1 (TGF-beta1). 相似文献

Three synthetic peptides (SBm4912, SBm7462 and SBm19733), derived from the Bm86 glycoprotein from Boophilus microplus gut, were constructed and used to immunize cattle from a tick-free area. The immunized animals received three subcutaneous doses of the peptides, with saponin as adjuvant, at 30-day intervals. The immune response was evaluated by IgG elicited against the peptides by the detection of anti-Bm86 specific antibodies in situ and by Western blotting analysis. After tick challenge, reduction in the number, weight and oviposition capacity of engorged females was observed in the tick population that had fed on immunized animals. The results pointed a high efficacy (81.05%) for the SBm7462 synthetic peptide in relation to the others (p<0.01), demonstrating the efficiency of the immune response elicited by synthetic peptides to control the cattle tick B. microplus. 相似文献

Hematologic and serum biochemical values were determined in blood samples from 217 donkeys (Equus asinus). Donkeys were classified on the basis of size, sex, age, and whether they were domestic or feral. Parametric (mean +/- 2 SD) and nonparametric (2.5th to 97.5th percentile) reference ranges were calculated for each analyte. For all donkeys, 26 of 46 analytes significantly departed from gaussian distribution. Serum lactate dehydrogenase activity in miniature donkeys was higher than that in other donkeys. Differential leukocyte counts in feral donkeys differed from those in other types in ways that suggested that the former had smaller parasite loads or experienced greater stress. Erythrocyte, lymphocyte, and platelet counts and fibrinogen, glucose, inorganic phosphorus, and potassium concentrations decreased with age. Eosinophil counts, mean corpuscular volume, and plasma protein, serum protein, and serum globulin concentrations increased with age. Female donkeys had significantly (P less than 0.05) higher mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration and leukocyte and neutrophil counts than did male donkeys. Mean corpuscular hemoglobin increased with age, and females had higher values than did males of all age groups. This article proposesan easy to implement cluster-based method for identifying groups of nonhom ogeneous means. The method overcomes the common problem of the classical multiple-comparison methods that lead to the construction of groups that often have substantial overlap. In addition, it solves the problem of other cluster-based methods that do not have a known level of significance and are not easy to apply. The new procedure is compared by simulation with a set of classical multiple-comparison methods and a cluster-based one. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of humic acids (HA) on intestinal viscosity, leaky gut and ammonia excretion in a 24 hr feed restriction (FR) model to induce intestinal permeability in chickens. One‐day‐old male Cobb‐Vantress broilers were randomly allocated to one of two groups (n = 25 chickens), with or without 0.2% of isolated HA from worm‐compost, and placed in brooder batteries. Chicks had ad libitum access to water and feed for 14 days. Intestinal permeability was induced by 24 hr FR starting at 14 days. At 15 days of age, chickens in both groups were given an appropriate dose of fluorescein isothiocyanate dextran (FITC‐d) by oral gavage. Intestine and liver samples were also collected to evaluate viscosity and bacterial translocation (BT), respectively. An increase (p < .05) in intestinal viscosity was observed in the experimental group consuming 0.2% of HA and was confirmed in a published in vitro digestion model that simulates the chemical and physical conditions of the crop, proventriculus and intestine of chickens. Furthermore, the treated group also showed a significant reduction in FITC‐d, liver BT and ammonia in the manure. These results suggest that HA have a positive impact in intestinal integrity in chickens. 相似文献

Microbial communities are affected by diet and play a role in the successful transition from milk to a solid diet. The response of microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract of Holstein bull calves to the uptake of milk with solid feed (control treatment; CT), or milk without solid feed (milk‐only treatment; MT) during the first 3 weeks of life was investigated. Samples were collected from the rumen (fluid and tissue), abomasum (fluid), cecum (fluid and tissue) and feces at 7, 14 and 20 days of age. Calf weight was higher on days 14 and 20 in the MT than the CT. In the rumen at 14 days, the fibrolytic bacteria Fibrobacter succinogenes and Prevotella ruminicola increased in the CT and Ruminococcus flavefaciens increased in the MT. This suggests that R. flavefaciens is not strictly fibrolytic and that it might use milk as a substrate or other microbial species might supply a substrate. Diet affected methanogens, but this may have been due to an indirect effect via an association with Geobacter spp. or other syntrophic partners. The treatments also affected microorganisms in the abomasum, cecum and feces. Our results contribute to an understanding of diet, microbes in the gastrointestinal tract and weaning. 相似文献

field conditions and other factors that might influence the success of the on-going rabies control programmes in an endemic
area of the disease, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia. All 240 study animals, selected using area-stratified random sampling,
were investigated in April 2007. Test prevalences were adjusted for the imperfect test characteristics using the Rogan–Gladen
estimator (deterministic and stochastic functions) and Bayesian inference. Ninety-four of the tested 240 vaccinated dogs were
classified as test-positive for rabies-specific antibodies. With regard to adjusted overall antibody seroprevalence, Bayesian
true prevalence estimates (41%, 95% CI: 37–46%) were lower than both of the Rogan–Gladen estimates. The effect of various

We have observed a renal toxicity consistent with an obstructive protein cast nephropathy in cynomolgus macaques but not in other species treated with different therapeutic candidates having a common carboxylic acid moiety, suggesting a species-specific sensitivity. Here, we present renal toxicity findings consistent with a protein cast nephropathy in a 2-week safety study in cynomolgus monkeys. Light microscopic changes consisted of intratubular cast formation, tubular dilatation, interstitial inflammation, and expansion of the medullary interstitium. Tubular cast material was identified as Tamm-Horsfall protein (THP) and, on ultrastructure, crystalloid material was present in vacuoles of tubular epithelium. It is hypothesized that microcrystal formation in the urinary tubular spaces induces aggregation of THP protein and cast formation in monkeys. Drug-induced obstructive nephropathy is not identified as a major problem in humans; thus, the clinical relevance of the above findings in monkeys is not clear. 相似文献
