One of the limiting factors to estimate accurately the biomass stocks of urban forests is the availability of allometric models developed from urban trees measurements. In addition, the traditional methods (destructive) to develop biomass equations are rarely applied in cities. The aim of this study was to develop a non-destructive method based on fractal analysis for trees of Fraxinus uhdei present in the green areas of Chapultepec Park in Mexico City. Diameter at breast height (DBH), total height and the height of the whorls of 46 randomly-selected trees were measured. In each tree, three different-order branches were collected to measure their total length and that of their links, the diameter before and after each branching point, the insertion angle, the number of branches, twigs and leaves, and fresh and dry weight. The felling of seven individuals at the site was taken advantage of to fit a taper function for the trunk and determine its biomass. Acceptable estimates with good accuracy were obtained for F. uhdei trees with a DBH of less than 23 cm. It is feasible to develop biomass models from measuring the branches and the trunk of young F. uhdei trees through the implementation of structural indices based on fractal geometry and without the need to fell healthy trees.  相似文献

Abstract

This transect study in 41–178 year-old stands of Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta DOUGL. ex. LOUD.) in the southern boreal forest of British Columbia, Canada, analyses how site conditions modify the coarse root–shoot dynamics of trees. The allometric relationship between diameter growth of coarse roots and trunk is scrutinised for long-term site dependence, and short-term reactions to periodic climate conditions. Along a gradient from poor to rich sites, we analysed 54 trees. The sampling scheme provided two increment cores each from the three main roots and the shoot at breast height per tree. From the year-ring series, we calculated diameter time series for each shoot and each root. With these data, we show (1) that the trees’ coarse root diameter and shoot diameter are linearly related in a double-logarithmic coordinate system, thus representing constant allometry on the long run. Statistical analysis of these long-term trajectories reveals that (2) the relative allocation to coarse roots versus shoot is much higher on poor sites compared to rich sites. A closer look at the short-term reaction to stress events in the period from 1995 to 2000, where several dry years occurred, underpins that (3) a lack of water supply triggers biomass allocation in favour of coarse roots at the expense of shoot growth most pronouncedly on poor sites. Implications of this morphological plasticity for allometric theory, method development, tree and stand dynamics and carbon storage assessment are discussed.  相似文献

Enrofloxacin is a concentration-dependent antimicrobial used in bacterial infections in poultry. During a few months of a turkey's life, pharmacokinetics of drugs undergoes substantial changes which may compromise their efficacy due to variability in internal exposure (measured by area under the concentration–time curve, AUC). The aim of this study was to describe the effects of age on the pharmacokinetics of a single intravenous (i.v.) and oral administration of enrofloxacin at a dose of 10 mg/kg to turkeys. It was found that during a 2.5-month-long period of growth from 1.4 to 14.6 kg, the AUC after i.v. administration increased almost threefold due to a significant decrease in the body clearance (from a mean of 0.76–0.28 L hr−1 kg−1). Over the same period, the mean elimination half-life was prolonged from 2.65 to 7.03 hr. Oral administration resulted in a similar trend in pharmacokinetic parameters. For both routes, formation of the major metabolite, ciprofloxacin, was marginal. Protein binding was not age-dependent and never exceeded 50%. Body clearance, volume of distribution and elimination half-life were subjected to an allometric analysis and a novel, nonlinear dosage protocol has been proposed to improve the internal exposure to the drug in different age groups of turkeys.  相似文献

A suite of regional allometric aboveground biomass functions were derived for Betula pubescens and Betula pendula for Norwegian conditions. The data consisted of 67 trees sampled throughout Norway. A total of 14 component functions were developed for total aboveground, total stem, stemwood, stem bark, live crown, live branch, leaf, and dead branch biomass using combinations of diameter at breast height and height as predictor variables. Application of the derived functions to existing local southern Norwegian mountain birch and regional Swedish biomass datasets indicated an overall good predictive ability of the developed functions. However, the functions produced slight underestimates, suggesting that the respective birch populations had differing biomass allocation patterns. When the developed functions were applied to Norwegian National Forest Inventory data, they produced slightly higher biomass stock and stock change estimates than what is obtained using existing Swedish functions. The higher estimates were evident in the north, central, and western part of Norway, while estimates were similar in southeastern Norway where growing conditions are most similar to Swedish conditions. The analysis indicates that the derived functions are the best available for regional birch biomass stock and stock change estimation in Norway.  相似文献

Summary

In this report the immunotoxk effects of dialkyltin compounds are reviewed. In rats they induce lymphocyte depletion in the thymus and the thymus dependent areas of the peripheral lymphoid organs, without signs of a generalized toxicity. As a consequence of their selective lymphocytotoxic action they cause immunosuppression, especially of the cell mediated immunity. Various mechanisms are discussed that may he involved in the selective effect on the thymus, indirectly through changes in endocrine control or the reticular epithelial cells, and directly on the intrathymic rapidly dividing cells. It is .suggested that the immunotoxicity of dialkyltin compounds is related to their affinity for dithiol groups, resulting in a disturbance of cell energetics as well as in cell proliferation.  相似文献

Tree biomass plays an important role in sustainable management and in estimating forest carbon stocks. The objective of this study was to select the best model for measuring stem biomass of Acacia auriculiformis in the study area. Data from five hillocks and 120 individual trees from each hillock were used in this study. Twelve different forms of linear, power and exponential equations were compared in this study to select the best model. Two models (VI and XI) were selected based on R 2, adjusted R 2, the Akaike information criterion, F-statistics and the five assumptions of linear regression. Model VI was discarded based on the Durbin-Watson value of autocorrelation of the residuals, then the ARIMA (2, 0, 1) model was used to remove the autocorrelation from the model and the final bias-corrected model XI was derived. The model was validated with a test data set having the same range of DBH and stem height of the training data set on the basis of linear regression, Morisita's similarity index, and t-test for mean difference between predicted and expected biomass. A comparison between the best logarithmic and non-linear allometric model shows that the non-linear model produces systematic biases and overestimates stem biomass for larger trees. The overall results showed that the bias-corrected logarithmic model XI can be used efficiently for estimating stem biomass of A. auriculiformis in the northeastern region of Bangladesh.  相似文献

Interrelationships between ontogeny, allometric mass, and carbon (C): nitrogen (N): phosphorus (P) ratios were quantified in Cuphea, a semi-domesticated indeterminate and phenotypically plastic potential oilseed crop. Relative growth rate and net assimilation rate were estimated as functions of growth stages, phenotypic traits and C:N:P ratios. Ontogenically, N:P ratios in reproductive and metabolic tissues were least variable and were mainly affected by allometric leaf mass and relative growth rate. Reproductive mass is best predicted by allometric stem mass and C:N ratio in structural and metabolic tissues; whereas, net assimilation rate is best predicted by allometric total branch length and relative growth rate. The conservative N:P ratios found in reproductive and metabolic tissues are important in determining reproductive allocation in Cuphea. Large antagonistic effects of C:N on N:P ratios found in different plant tissues suggest that maximum reproductive allocation can be attained by manipulating N:P ratio during ontogeny. A greater investment of resources in reproduction may be possible for this semi-domesticated crop if nutrient and mass allocation to supporting stems and roots can be altered for the benefit of reproductive biomass.  相似文献

Variation in body size has important implications for physical performance and fitness. For insects, adult size and morphology are determined by larval growth and metamorphosis. Female blue orchard bees, Osmia lignaria, (Say) provision a finite quantity of food to their offspring. In this study, we asked how provision-dependent variation in size changes adult morphology. We performed a diet manipulation in which some larvae were starved in the final instar and some were given unlimited food. We examined the consequences on adult morphology in two ways. First, allometric relationships between major body regions (head, thorax, abdomen) and total body mass were measured to determine relative growth of these structures. Second, morphometrics that are critical for flight (wing area, wing loading, and extra flight power index) were quantified. Head and thorax mass had hyperallometric relationships with body size, indicating these parts become disproportionately large in adults when larvae are given copious provisions. However, abdominal mass and wing area increased hypoallometrically with body size. Thus, large adults had disproportionately lighter abdomens and smaller wing areas than smaller adults. Though both males and females followed these general patterns, allometric patterns were affected by sex. For flight metrics, small adults had reduced wing loading and an increased extra flight power index. These results suggest that diet quantity alters development in ways that affect the morphometric trait relationships in adult O. lignaria and may lead to functional differences in performance.  相似文献

Estimation of individual tree seedling biomass isrequired in a variety of forest management andresearch applications such as assessment of netprimary productivity and carbon sequestrationpotential of forest stands, understory forest fuelinventories, and development of silviculturalguidelines to promote the growth of desired treespecies. Photo imagery is a promising non-destructivemethod for estimating the aboveground biomass of treeseedlings. This method was tested using naturallyregenerated white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench)Voss) seedlings growing in the understory of a mixedconifer shelterwood in central Ontario. In the fall of1997, 45 seedlings were sampled from plots exposed toone of three mechanical release treatments (earlyspring release, mid summer release, and no release(control)) in 1994. Each seedling was photographed inthe field to measure the vertical projected area(silhouette area) of the aboveground portion of theseedling. Seedlings were harvested, basal diameter andtotal height measured, and biomass (dry mass) offoliage, branches, main stem and total abovegroundplant tissue determined. Regression analysis revealeda strong relationship between both silhouette area andbasal diameter, and seedling biomass. Coefficients ofdetermination for regression equations usingsilhouette area were equal to 0.892, 0.918, 0.926, and0.937 for the main stem, branches, foliage, and totalaboveground biomass, respectively. Respectivecoefficients of determination for regression equationsusing basal diameter were 0.960, 0.945, 0.953, and0.977. Silhouette area-based equations for totalaboveground and foliar biomass differed significantly(P < 0.005) among release treatments. Nosignificant differences among treatments were observedbetween silhouette area-based equations for biomass ofbranches and main stem (P > 0.05), or betweenbasal diameter-biomass (allometric) equations for allcomponents (P > 0.1). The method was thentested by validating the biomass equations using anindependent data set from 35 white spruce seedlingsfrom the same site and cohort, but exposed todifferent treatments and microenvironmentalconditions. For each seedling, biomass components werepredicted using silhouette area-based and allometricequations, and a relative error of predictioncalculated. The mean relative error for silhouettearea-based predictions varied among biomass componentsfrom –20.25% to –3.21%, with standard deviation ofthe error ranging from 23.04% to 33.44%. The meanrelative error for allometric equations ranged from–2.46% to –21.75%, with standard deviations of23.34% to 32.61%. These results suggest that: (1)photo imagery can be used as an alternative to moretraditional allometric methods of biomass estimation,and (2) general (developed for a broad range ofgrowing conditions) equations derived by either methodare preferable to those specifically calibrated for agiven growing environment.  相似文献

Constant and oscillating egg incubation temperatures on embryonic development and early larval morphology were studied in longfin yellowtail (Seriola rivoliana Valenciennes). We investigated the effects of constant temperatures from 16 to 32°C on embryo development and larval morphology at hatch, and whether oscillating temperature during embryogenesis could lead to larval morphological variations. After hatching, larval morphology and development during yolk sac (YS) utilization were examined in larvae at constant temperatures and larvae at 25°C that had oscillating temperature during egg incubation. Hatching rates were > 75%, only decreasing to ~ 50% at 30°C. At constant temperatures, the largest larvae occurred at 22 and 24°C. The oscillating temperature did not affect the timing of embryo development but resulted in larger and smaller larvae with a smaller and bigger YS, respectively, with a similar hatching time. Therefore, a growth response occurred in embryos during a window of development before hatching, depending on the adaptive response to temperature (spawn‐specific). After hatching, most of the YS was absorbed within 24 hr in all treatments, and the growth of the larval head was a priority with an optimal development at 26°C. There was compensatory growth in smaller larvae resulting in similar sizes after YS utilization, but larvae showed variations in body structure that could be important in further aquaculture research.  相似文献
