Telemetry research on elusive wildlife: A synthesis of studies on giant pandas

Telemetry studies that track animals through space and time can lead to advances in scientific understanding that are vital in conservation efforts. For example, telemetry studies of the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) have shed light on many aspects of panda biology, but small sample sizes in each separate study make it difficult to draw broad conclusions. To overcome this problem we conducted the first synthesis of all 5 panda telemetry studies conducted to date. Using these data we investigated patterns in 6 main topics: home range, space–use interactions, core areas, movement patterns, seasonal migration and natal dispersal. We found that panda home range sizes do not vary between 2 main mountain ranges (Qionglai and Qinling), as was previously believed. Our results also suggest that female pandas increase their movement in the mating season: a behavior typically attributed only to males. We found and summarized telemetry and genetic evidence for female natal dispersal in the giant panda. Our synthesis highlights the need for additional research relating panda behavior to human disturbance factors, and can aid future studies on giant pandas as well as other species.     

定制家居柔性化生产线控制系统信息交互模型

探讨板式定制家居柔性化生产线控制系统数据信息交互方法,以期为解决中小企业由于生产线中各工段所用控制系统的类型不同、总线不同而导致数据信息前后传递不畅、动作不协调的问题提供科学依据。分析定制家居柔性化生产线组成和工艺流程,建立控制系统模型;提出基于Modbus TCP/IP协议和类对象的思想构建数据信息交互模型,抽象出5个公共类:伺服电机类、变频电机类、加工工件类、指令输入类、状态输出类和7个私有类:龙门分拣机器人类、RGV运料小车类、开料裁板锯类、立体缓存机器人类、U型封边线类、打孔机器人类、终点缓存区类;为每个工段主机分配Modbus寄存器的起始、终止地址和数据缓冲区长度从而将数据交互方法实例化。研究结果表明所建数据信息交互模型可实现生产线不同工段间的信息流转和几种主流PLC之间的数据交互,达到5Hz的数据采样与交互频率且正确率达到了100%;易于实现扩展和移植,满足板式定制家居柔性化生产线的工艺需求,为板式定制家居柔性化生产线提供数据交互范式和接口技术。     

邵阳市双龙紫薇主题公园营建技术

湖南省内首个由民营企业投资建设的公益性城市主题公园面积68hm2,利用邵阳市区一处紫色页岩荒山建成,历时10年,投资2亿元,采用破岩换土等高标准工程造林技术,以紫薇双龙大型植物园艺造景为主体,采取乔、灌、草、水景等立体建园模式。园内紫薇造景龙单条全长868m、宽3.75m、高2.80m,龙头长20.65m、高7.70m,造型所用紫薇总株数1909株。目前正申请世界上最长、最大的植物园艺造型作品吉尼斯世界纪录。     

Spring home ranges of white bass in irrigation reservoirs of the Republican River Basin, Nebraska

Abstract –  Fishery biologists have documented small home ranges, relative to available habitat, for many littoral freshwater fishes. Home ranges for pelagic species, such as white bass Morone chrysops , are generally not well described, yet are thought to be large. We studied white bass movement using acoustic telemetry in two irrigation reservoirs of the Republican River basin in south-western Nebraska. Acoustic transmitters were implanted in fall of the previous year and tracking occurred a minimum of once per week throughout spring (mid-March to May) 2007 and 2008. Linear home ranges were calculated from observed locations of individual fish. Twelve of the twenty-seven tagged fish with at least five locations exhibited localised home ranges throughout the spring whereas the remaining fish exhibited home ranges extending across large portions of each reservoir. Home range size was not correlated with fish size or condition.

Site fidelity,diel and seasonal activities of yellow‐phase Japanese eels (Anguilla japonica) in a freshwater habitat as inferred from acoustic telemetry

Japanese eels (Anguilla japonica) perform large‐scale oceanic migrations between their spawning ground and growth habitats in continental waters during life history. However, between these migrations, they spend most of time in growth habitats such as rivers. To investigate the diel and seasonal activities, homing behaviour and home range of yellow‐phase Japanese eels in the lower reach of the Tone River, we tracked them throughout a year using a fine‐scale positioning system (VPS) based on acoustic telemetry. The tracked eels were generally nocturnal, but not exclusively. They were mainly mobile from spring to autumn, with little or no activity observed during winter. A transport‐release experiment showed that most eels returned to their original capture area within 13 days after release. The eels had very small home ranges (mean ± SD = 0.085 ± 0.068 km²), core areas (0.014 ± 0.014 km²) and linear home ranges (744 ± 268 m). They also tended to be distributed on one particular side of the river (right or left bank) and in one particular shore type (revetment or vegetation), rarely moving from one to the other. This study provides evidence for nocturnal, dormancy, homing behaviours, limited habitat use and small home range size in Japanese eels. The eels clearly showed strong fidelity to a “familiar” site, which contrasts with the long distances travelled during upstream and downstream migration phases in the river, and during spawning migrations in the ocean.
