Virology: The efficacy of a new single post‐exposure treatment of rabies in mice without vaccination

Summary

Local application of rabies immune serum and isoprinosine, an immunomodulator with antiviral activity was effective in mice infected with a sylvatic rabies virus. In this way, a single medical or veterinary treatment is only required, which is particularly important for developing but also for developed countries.

The importance of using a post‐exposure potency test to monitor rabies vaccines is emphasized. The same principle could be applied to other emerging viral infections of humans (for example, human immunodeficiency virus infection) and animals, for which no effective vaccines are available at this moment.

A strategic alliance model for economic organisation of small-scale forestry in Australia

Small-scale plantation forestry is likely to have a number of discrete agents contributing endowments to the production function. In this paper it is argued that the traditional methods of economic organisation used in plantation forestry may not be appropriate for achieving the objectives of the venture partners so alternative methods may be required. A strategic alliance model for small-scale plantation ventures in north Queensland is developed, which has multi-nodal features and which incorporate vertical and horizontal alliances. The core alliance is vertical and involves seven potential primary factors of production necessary for a successful forestry venture (namely land, labour, capital, silviculture skills, marketing skills, harvesting and processing skills and government). The strategic alliance model also incorporates horizontal alliances because each partner may participate in a network with other like partners within their field, therefore representing economies of size or scale alliances. The proposed model recognises the importance of minimising transaction costs, building trust, promoting sound corporate governance and ensuring continuing information exchanges between partners are being the factors behind successful alliances.

Strategic Decision for Random Inventory System Based on Mente Carlo''s Simulation Technology

Numerical simulation for random inventory system applying Mente Carlo's simulation technology is carried on,moreover system decision is made and optimal solution is arrived after research on relevant sensitive parameter.These results of research confirm that the way of making decision is practicable.Two important conclusions are proved by the data from an example inventory system.One of them is that optimal inventory strategic permit a restrictive short-of-stock policy in the case of paying for decrease because of short-of-stock;the other is that it embodies the ideas of zero-inventory technology and Just-In-Time(JIT).     

Analysis and Strategic Decision of Extinguishments System at the Initial Stage of Fire in Commercial Buildings

The best chance to extinguish the fire in commercial buildings is at the initial stage of a fire.For the problems during extinguishments at the initial stage of fire,a fire extinguishment system model at initial stage of fire in commercial buildings is designed.The fire data come from the fire cases in Chinese commercial buildings.The expected value and Variance of probability of basic events are calculated by using Bayesian statistical analysis method,which has overcome the difficulty from inefficient fire datum and obtaining repeated fire experience.Then the failure probability of extinguishments system at initial stage of fire is concluded from fault tree analysis and the error propagation analysis of fault tree is made.A systematic strategic decision has been made finally.

A spatial decision support system for long‐term forest management planning by means of linear programming and a geographical information system

The increased concern for environmental values increases the complexity of long‐term forest management planning. Environmental issues have to be dealt with over space and time. By creating links between existing aspatial long‐term forest management models and geographical information systems (GIS), environmental issues can be treated within the forest management planning process. In this article, a spatial decision support system (SDSS) developed by incorporating a forest management planning model into a GIS is presented. A case study is employed to illustrate the usefulness of the SDSS using real data. In order to preserve the water bodies in a forest area, the allowable treatments in areas falling within certain distances of lakes, streams, and swamps were restricted. Treatment schedules were simulated for all stands, and linear programming was utilized to maximize the net present value (NPV) subject to a non‐declining felling path. The NPV was reduced by 6.9% due to the treatment restrictions, and the annual harvest flow was reduced by about 10%. Various thematic maps of future time periods may be produced for subjective evaluation of the results.
