In this study, the changes in vitamin C, l-ascorbic acid (AA) and l-dehydroascorbic acid (DHA) levels in broccoli flower buds were examined during pre-storage and storage periods, simulating refrigerated transport with wholesale distribution and retail, respectively. Broccoli heads were pre-stored for 4 or 7 days at 0 °C or 4 °C in the dark and then stored for 3 days at 10 °C or 18 °C. During storage the broccoli heads were exposed for 12 h per day to three different levels of visible light (13, 19 or 25 μmol m−2 s−1) or a combination of visible light (19 μmol m−2 s−1) and UV-B irradiation (20 kJ m−2 d−1), or they were stored in the dark. The vitamin C content in broccoli flower buds during storage was significantly affected by pre-storage period and temperature. Higher vitamin C levels in flower buds after storage were observed for broccoli heads pre-stored for 4 days or at 0 °C as compared to those pre-stored for 7 days or at 4 °C. Storage temperature also affected vitamin C in broccoli flower buds, with higher levels observed for broccoli stored at 10 °C than at 18 °C. Hence, vitamin C in broccoli flower buds was demonstrated to decrease together with increasing pre-storage period, pre-storage temperature and storage temperature. AA in broccoli flower buds was influenced mainly by storage temperature and to a minor extent by pre-storage temperature. The DHA level and DHA/AA ratio were stable in flower buds of broccoli pre-stored for 7 days, whereas increasing tendencies for both DHA level and ratio were observed after pre-storage for 4 days. These results indicate a shift in the ascorbate metabolism in broccoli flower buds during storage at low temperatures, with its higher rate observed for broccoli pre-stored for shorter time. Future climate development and its effects on forest ecosystems are not easily predicted or described in terms of standard probability concepts. Nevertheless, forest managers continuously make long-term decisions that will be subject to climate change impacts. The manager's assessment of possible developments and impacts and the related uncertainty will affect the combined decision on timing of final harvest and the choice of species for regeneration. We analyse harvest of a Norway spruce stand with the option to regenerate with Norway spruce or oak. We use simulated variations in biophysical risks to generate a set of alternative outcomes, investigating effects on decision making of three aspects of uncertainty: (i) the perceived time horizon before there will be certainty on outcome, (ii) the spread of impacts across the set of alternative outcomes, and (iii) the subjective probability (belief) assigned to each outcome. Results show that the later a forest manager expects to obtain certainty about climate change or the more skewed their belief distribution, the more will decisions be based on ex ante assessments — suggesting that if forest managers believe that climate change uncertainty will prevail for a longer period of time, they may make sub-optimal decisions ex ante. 相似文献

Bagasse particleboards (BPBs) were made using polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (pMDI) resin as binder and wax emulsion as dimension stabilizer. A factorial experiment was conducted to measure the effects of wax and pMDI resin content on particleboard dimension stability and mechanical properties. The data were compared with respective properties specified in the ANSI A208.1 standard for commercial M3 grade wood-based particleboard.Wax-sizing improved the linear expansion (LE) of the particleboards under both pMDI resin contents used in this research and all LE values were controlled under the critical value of 0.35%. The use of wax significantly reduced 24-h water absorption and thickness swelling compared to the control panels without wax. Wax-sizing at the moderate levels also showed positive influence on long-term water absorption and thickness swelling properties. Wax content levels, however, did not significantly influence water absorption and thickness swelling behavior. Wax-sizing had no evident negative effects on the bending properties of MDI-bonded bagasse particleboards under both resin contents, while it caused slightly negative effect on internal bond strength. Mechanical properties of all boards far exceeded the minimum values specified in ANSI A208.1 standard. The entire properties of the 5% pMDI BPBs were better than those of the 3% pMDI panels as expected. 相似文献

Biological control of plant pathogens on strawberries may be improved by the simultaneous application of different biological control agents (BCAs). Therefore, the compatibility of various BCAs which had previously shown to be effective against powdery mildew (Podosphaera aphanis (Wallr.) U. Braun & S. Takam) under laboratory conditions was examined in vitro. Inhibitory effects between fungal and bacterial BCAs were demonstrated in dual culture tests on two solid nutrient media. Leaf disc assays with single and multiple strain treatments demonstrated either unaffected or significantly improved control of P. aphanis for many multiple strain treatments, even if antagonistic interactions previously occurred in dual culture tests. Highest inhibition of powdery mildew conidiation (80.7% reduction) was achieved with multiple strain treatments with Bacillus subtilis FZB24 and Metarhizium anisopliae (p < 0.001). In this combination, conidiation was 3.7 times lower than in single treatments with B. subtilis indicating synergistic interactions between these BCAs. Combinations of Trichoderma harzianum T58 and B. subtilis FZB24 showed antagonistic interactions in dual culture tests as well as in leaf disc assays. A silvopastoral agroforestry system involving sheep is an important silvicultural issue. We examined the factors that affect
the continuation or discontinuation of sheep vegetation management (SVM) in British Columbia. A questionnaire was used to
conduct interviews with a randomly selected sample of contractors and farmers who were involved in SVM in British Columbia
(BC). Based on a stepwise discriminant analysis, we found that the profitability of SVM, and the practitioners' commitment
(number of ewes owned by the farmer or contractor), experience (number of years the farmer or contractor has practiced SVM
on public lands in BC) and trust or confidence (number of years the farmer or contractor has consistently worked for the landlord)
contributed to the farmer's or contractor's continuation or discontinuation of SVM practice. The factors we defined seemed
to be validated (corroborated) by a complex of determinants voiced by various experts concerning the relationship between
SVM and the forestry economy in BC, the scale of sheep farming in BC, the relative absence of an agricultural infrastructure
to support sheep farming in BC, and the continuity of SVM from year to year. Further investigation into these factors and
others is required to advance our understanding of SVM in British Columbia.

Pre-marked skid trails, directional felling and climber cutting when logging in tropical rainforests may be important ways of reducing damage to the forest, thus creating a healthier stand and improving future yields.This study, carried out in a virgin dipterocarp rainforest in the south of Sabah, Malaysia, compared two types of logging (both with and without pre-cutting climbers): conventional selective logging (CL) and supervised logging (SL). The latter is a selective logging system in which both pre-marked skid trails and directional felling were implemented. The pre-marked skid trails were aligned parallel to each other, spaced 62 m apart. A randomised complete block 2 × 2 factorial design was used in the experiment, consisting of 16 gross treatment plots, each of 5.76 ha with a 1 ha net plot in the centre.Fewer trees tended (0.050 < P ≤ 0.100) to be logged in SL plots than in CL plots (on average 9.4 and 13.0 trees ≥60 cm diameter breast height ha−1). Pre-felling of climbers resulted in four more dipterocarp trees being logged ha−1, compared with no climber cutting: a statistically significant difference (P ≤ 0.050). The basal areas lost of both large trees (≥ 60 cm dbh) and small dipterocarp trees (10–29 cm dbh) tended to differ between the logging systems, with CL leading to greater losses.There were significant differences in the residual stands left by the logging systems, with respect to the number of dipterocarps and their basal area in the diameter class 10–29 cm; ca 30% more stems being found after SL. No significant differences (or tendencies) in these variables were found in the residual stands in other diameter classes, or when trees of all species were considered. 相似文献

The amount of UF resin penetration into fibers, used for the production of medium density fiberboard (MDF), is unknown. To
evaluate the relationship between resin viscosity and resin penetration depth, an experimental procedure involving confocal
laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and a Toluidine Blue O staining system was performed. The results indicate that CLSM in combination
with a Toluidine Blue O staining system is a good way to characterize UF resin penetration into wood fibers. The main penetration
direction is toward the fiber lumen. For wet fibers, whose moisture content is about 88%, the effect of resin viscosity with
a range of 80 cps – 340 cps on penetration is very similar, with all adhesives reaching or almost reaching the fiber lumen
after 60 min at room temperature. For MDF industrial samples, the highest depth of penetration of the adhesive was attained
in the second dryer stage. After the second dryer stage, the resin penetration into the fiber did not increase. 相似文献
