The continued expansion of intensive aquaculture activities requires that substitutes for fish meal‐based protein be identified. In this study, we evaluated partial (50 and 75%) replacement of fish meal in red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus, diets with soy protein concentrate (S) and barley protein concentrate (B). Growth, feed efficiency, survival, tolerance to low temperature, and tolerance to handling in warm, hypersaline water were evaluated. Only the diet with a 50% replacement of fish meal with S yielded results comparable to fish fed a nonsubstituted fish meal diet. However, the low‐temperature studies were complicated by differences in mean fish weight among the groups. The results of this study indicate S may be partially substituted for fish meal in red drum diets.  相似文献

The results of gross and histopathological study of a near-term male hamster exencephalic lateral cephalothoracopagus are presented. There was minimal duplication of the internal organs to the point of division at the abdomen. The appendicular skeleton was relatively unaffected by the severe malformations of the axial skeleton. The studies suggested that the lateral relationship of the skull to the spinal columns was a consequence of the presence of two embryonic neural tubes; the chordomesodermal systems of the right and left twins apparently contributed the tissues for the right and left cephalic neural folds, respectively. Anomalies of the vertebral bodies and neural arches were not related to failure of closure of the neural tube as there was no evidence for rachischisis in either body half. Rather, the anomalous axial skeletal elements were apparently the result of competing fields of development by two chordomesodermal systems. The twins were recovered from a dam maintained on a diet consisting of 80% cassava, a cyanide-containing staple consumed by humans in tropical countries. Because the numbers of resorbed implantation sites and malformed litermates were low and the failure to produce conjoined twins in other litters recovered from dams given cassava diets, it appears unlikely that the malformation was related to the composition of the diet.  相似文献

Antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity to viral-infected cells, chicken red blood cells, and tumor cells was tested using different effector cell populations: polymorphonuclear cells, mononuclear cells, and mononuclear cells separated into adherent and nonadherent populations by Sephadex G-10. Polymorphonuclear cells were the most efficient mediators of antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity against most targets, although a combination of G-10 adherent and polymorphonuclear cells was more efficient in killing infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus-infected cells than either single cell population. Removal of G-10 adherent cells from the mononuclear cell population removed all antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity from that population, indicating the lack of a typical K cell in bovine peripheral blood.  相似文献

Cachectin/tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF), a protein produced by macrophages upon stimulation, has been implicated as an important mediator of inflammatory processes and of clinical manifestations in chronic infectious diseases. In order to study further the potential role of TNF in infectious diseases, a homologous system was employed in which recombinant Escherichia coli (E. coli) derived bovine TNF (rBoTNF) was injected in cattle, either as a single bolus or in a repetitive treatment-regime. No clinical signs were observed, although changes occurred in hematologic and immunologic parameters when less than 0.5 mg of TNF/100 kg body weight was administered twice daily for 18 days. Prolonged treatment with 0.05-0.5 mg/100 kg induced histologic but no gross changes in the kidneys and liver. When doses were increased above 0.5 mg/100 kg, depression, anorexia, cachexia, and diarrhea appeared rapidly. Pathologic changes were apparent in various tissues including liver, kidneys, and lymphoid organs; body fat depots were depleted. Most of these changes appeared to be reversible; return to normal tissue-morphology occurred within 3 weeks of withdrawal of rBoTNF. The clinical and pathologic changes induced by prolonged rBoTNF administration resembled those observed in some chronic parasitic and viral infections of cattle in which macrophage-activation characteristically occur. Our finding may be relevant to the elucidation of the pathogenesis of these and other chronic infections.  相似文献

Standard linear adjustment of weaning weight to a constant age has been shown to introduce bias in the adjusted weight due to nonlinear growth from birth to weaning of beef calves. Ten years of field records from the five strains of Beefbooster Cattle Alberta Ltd. seed stock herds were used to investigate the use of correction factors to adjust standard 180-d weight (WT180) for this bias. Statistical analyses were performed within strain and followed three steps: 1) the full data set was split into an estimation set (ES) and a validation set (VS), 2) WT180 from the ES was used to develop estimates of correction factors using a model including herd (H), year (YR), age of dam (DA), sex of calf (S), all two and three-way interactions, and any significant linear and quadratic covariates of calf age at weaning deviated from 180 d (DEVCA) and interactions between DEVCA and DA, S or DA x S, and 3) significant DEVCA coefficients were used to correct WT180 from the VS, then WT180 and the corrected weight (WTCOR) from the VS were analyzed with the same model as in Step 2 and significance of DEVCA terms were compared. Two types of data splitting were used. Adjusted R2 was calculated to describe the proportion of total variation of DEVCA terms explained for WT180 from the ES. The DEVCA terms explained .08 to 1.54% of the total variation for the five strains. Linear and quadratic correction factors were both positive and negative. In humans, homocysteine (Hcy) is employed to monitor renal, cardiovascular, and other diseases and their complications. The aim of the current study was to define the analytical performances of an enzymatic method not yet validated in dogs for measuring homocysteine, and to assess the possible clinical usefulness of Hcy measurement. Using conventional approaches, the analytical performances were investigated by assessing, imprecision, inaccuracy, and interference of hemoglobin, triglycerides, and bilirubin. The possible clinical usefulness of Hcy determination was assessed by comparing the results of healthy dogs (n = 8) with those of dogs with heart disease (n = 10), inflammation (n = 6), gastrointestinal disorders (n = 7), neoplasia (n = 8), renal failure (n = 4), trauma (n = 7), and other miscellaneous diseases (n = 6). Preliminary evaluation of this enzymatic method showed it to be precise at Hcy levels close to or higher than the values in dogs with renal or cardiac disorders that had the highest Hcy levels. By contrast, at low Hcy levels, which were recorded basically in control dogs, the method suffers from high imprecision. The sample of choice is serum. The use of icteric samples should be avoided, while hemoglobin and lipids have only a minor effect on Hcy measurement. In conclusion, the enzymatic method employed in the current study provides useful information in dogs and could be used to monitor cardiac and renal disorders, in which Hcy concentrations are elevated.  相似文献
