OBJECTIVE :To evaluate the effect of pre- and intraoperatively administered magnesium sulphate (MgSO(4)) on the induction dose of thiopental and of halothane for maintenance of anaesthesia in dogs undergoing ovariohysterectomy (OHE). STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study. ANIMALS: Forty-six healthy, ASA physical status 1 dogs, scheduled for elective OHE. METHODS: The dogs were randomly assigned to receive a bolus of 50 mg kg(-1) MgSO(4) intravenously (IV), just before induction of anaesthesia, followed by a constant rate infusion (CRI) of 12 mg kg(-1) hour(-1) MgSO(4) intraoperatively (group Mg, n = 27) or a placebo bolus and CRI of 0.9% sodium chloride (NaCl) (group C, n = 19), approximately 30 minutes after premedication with acepromazine (0.05 mg kg(-1), intramuscularly, IM) and carprofen (4 mg kg(-1), subcutaneously, SC). Anaesthesia was induced with thiopental administered to effect and maintained with halothane in oxygen. End-tidal halothane (ET(hal)) was adjusted to achieve adequate depth of anaesthesia. Blood samples were obtained pre- and postoperatively for measurement of total serum magnesium concentration. RESULTS: The mean dose of thiopental was statistically lower (p < 0.0005) and the mean standardized ET(hal) concentration and end-tidal carbon dioxide partial pressure (Pe'CO(2)) areas under the curve were statistically smaller (p < 0.0005 and 0.014 respectively) in group Mg. Postoperatively the mean total serum magnesium concentration was statistically higher than the preoperative value (p < 0.0005) in group Mg, but not in group C. Nausea, associated with the MgSO(4) bolus injection, was observed in six dogs in group Mg, two of which vomited prior to induction of anaesthesia. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Magnesium sulphate administration reduced the induction dose of thiopental and ET(hal) concentration for maintenance of anaesthesia in dogs undergoing OHE. Observed side effects were nausea and vomiting.  相似文献

Our objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of skin-stretching devices for closing defects on the extremities of dogs. Antebrachial skin defects were created on the limbs of 24 dogs randomly divided into three groups. Skin stretchers included staples and sutures passing through them (group A), sutures and hypodermic needles (group B), and Pavletic device (group C). Wounds on the left were further undermined in all groups. Tension and blood perfusion were assessed. After removing the stretchers on day 3, the defects were sutured and wound healing was clinically scored. Histological variables evaluated were cellular infiltration, edema, collagen orientation, and thickness of epidermis. Significant differences in tension were found among groups (p < 0.0005) and between measurement times for undermined (p = 0.001) or non-undermined (p < 0.0005) wounds. In contrast, blood perfusion values did not differ significantly. Clinical scores for group B seemed to be better than those for groups A and C, but differences were not significant. Primary wound closure using the Pavletic device was not feasible. No significant differences in histological variables were found between groups. Skin stretching with staples or hypodermic needles resulted in successful wound management with minor side effects on skin histology and circulation.  相似文献

The effectiveness of in vitro thermotherapy (explants at 35–37°C for 20 days) in obtaining propagating material of apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) cultivar Bebecou that is free of Plum pox virus (PPV) was compared to a conventional heat treatment technique (potted plants at 30–35°C for 8 weeks). An improved protocol for in vitro thermotherapy was combined with shoot tip culture. The protocol is 5.8 times more effective than conventional thermotherapy while taking half the time and is likely to have a high commercial impact for nurseries.  相似文献

The most important tobacco producing areas in Greece were surveyed for virus presence, from 1997 to 2000. Tobacco seedlings or plants showing virus-like symptoms were randomly collected from seedbeds or fields, respectively, and tested by ELISA, and/or mechanical inoculation onto indicator plants. Potato virus Y (PVY), Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) and Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) were detected in all sampling areas, with TMV mainly found in oriental varieties. Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) consisted a serious endemic virus in Northern Greece (Thrace, Central and Eastern Macedonia), whereas Alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV) was mainly found in regions, where alfalfa was cultivated in the vicinity of tobacco crops. Eggplant mottled dwarf virus (EMDV) was detected in several areas but always in very low incidence (<0.01%). Surveys were also conducted to assess the potential reservoir hosts of PVY, CMV and AMV among weeds collected from highly infected tobacco fields from 1998 to 2000. Among 3450 samples tested for PVY, plants from 17 species in 10 families were found infected. For CMV, 2891 weed samples were tested and 19 species in 12 families were positive. Assays for AMV infection were made on 961 samples and 12 species in 9 families were identified as hosts of this virus.  相似文献

The objectives of the work described in this paper were: (i) to study the outcome of challenging ewes with Mannheimia haemolytica, at different sites of their teats, (ii) to compare the effects of two different isolates of the organism and (iii) to describe the features of the resulting lesions. Thirty-two ewes were used in the study and allocated into one of two groups (A or B, n = 16); they were challenged with one of two isolates of M. haemolytica, respectively, strain ES26L of known pathogenicity or strain VSM08L from the teat duct of a healthy ewe. Each group was further divided into four equal subgroups: the ewes in the A1/B1 subgroups were intramammarily challenged; one teat of the ewes in the A2/B2 subgroups was immersed into a broth-culture of the organisms; one teat of the ewes in the A3/B3 subgroups was inoculated 2 mm-deep, whilst one teat of the ewes in the A4/B4 subgroups was inoculated 6 mm-deep. The animals were monitored clinically, bacteriologically and cytologically before and after challenge; one animal in each subgroup was euthanised 2, 4, 7 and 11 days after challenge. All ewes in the A1/B1 subgroups developed clinical mastitis, whilst of the other animals, only one ewe in each of the A4/B4 subgroups did. Neither of the two strains used was associated with more positive bacteriological or CMT results; the A2/B2 subgroups were associated with less positive results than the A3/B3 and A4/B4 subgroups. In some ewes of the A2/B2 subgroups, mild leucocytic infiltration in the teat was evident; in the ewes of the A3/B3 subgroups, leucocytic infiltration (neutrophils, lymphocytes, plasma cells) was seen, as well as a lymphoid hyperplasia at the border between the teat duct and teat cistern; in ewes of the A4/B4 subgroups, intense subepithelial leucocytic infiltration was the salient feature. No differences were found in the severity of lesions between the two strains used or the three treatments carried out. Although strain VSM08L had been isolated from the teat duct of a healthy ewe, it caused mastitis when inoculated intramammarily; although strain ES26L is of known pathogenicity for the mammary gland, it did not cause clinical mastitis when deposited 2 mm-deep into the teat. These findings point to a protective role of the teat of ewes, which appear to limit bacterial penetration from the teat duct or cistern to the mammary gland. The lymphoid tissue, at the border between the teat duct--teat cistern, may play a significant protective role.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   The seasonal intrinsic variability of the North Aegean Sea Mediterranean horse mackerel Trachurus mediterraneus population has been studied from monthly samples taken from the Greek purse-seine fishery over a 4-year period (2001–2005). The length and weight frequency distributions differed significantly by season, the highest mean lengths and weights attained in spring and the lowest in autumn. Length-weight relationships were determined on a monthly and annual basis, and monthly variations on the allometry coefficient were found. The differences between the coefficient obtained for annual data and the coefficients for each month were not significant in 50% of the cases. The b -values obtained both in this study and some of the previously reported in the Mediterranean Sea and other Greek waters were compared, showing basic similarities and minor spatial variation. The seasonal cycle in Mediterranean horse mackerel condition appears to be related to the reproductive cycle of the fish. Values of muscle yield ranged between 23.33% and 33.07% (mean value 28.48 ± 2.49%), but variations within seasons were not significant.  相似文献
