Experiments were conducted to study the effect of heat stress on uterine tissue carbonic anhydrase levels and their isozyme patterns in relation to production of no- and thin-shelled eggs. Birds exposed to naturally occurring heat stress had lower enzyme levels in their uteri than birds kept in an air-conditioned pen. 4 isozyme bands of carbonic anhydrase were visible in uterine tissue homogenate from both groups of birds. Isozymes were suppressed in heat-stressed birds, as was evident from staining intensities of the bands. This provided evidence to the effect that heat stress not only decreased the total quantity of carbonic anhydrase in the uteri of the hens but also suppressed its isozyme fractions, leading to greater production of no-shell and thin-shelled eggs.  相似文献

One thousand twenty steers and heifers were used in six feeding trials to examine the influence of laidlomycin propionate on feedlot performance and to determine the most efficacious dietary concentrations of that ionophore. Cattle were fed diets ranging in energy content from 1.08 to 1.49 Mcal NEg/kg of DM. Laidlomycin propionate improved rate of gain and feed conversion in both steers and heifers. Improvements in performance were not evident when laidlomycin propionate was fed at only 3 mg/kg. However, both average daily gain and feed conversion were improved by laidlomycin propionate within the range of 6 to 12 mg/kg of DM (P less than .001). Feed consumption was not substantially affected by inclusion of laidlomycin propionate in the diet. Improvements in ADG and feed conversion were greater on lower-energy diets than on higher-energy diets, but both these performance characteristics were improved regardless of the type of diet fed. Average daily gain was maximized with laidlomycin propionate at 6 mg/kg, whereas improvements in feed conversion were sustained through 12 mg/kg. Carcasses of cattle fed diets containing 6 to 12 mg/kg of laidlomycin propionate weighed 7.3 kg more (P less than .001) than carcasses of cattle fed the control diets. Yield grade and quality grade were not affected by laidlomycin propionate (P greater than .05).  相似文献

Effects of an 18 min exercise test, on three separate occasions during a one year jump-training programme, was studied in seven horses. Determinations were carried out on venous blood for packed cell volume, haemoglobin, total protein, lactate and pyruvate, glucose, free fatty acids, insulin, glucagon, blood gases, bicarbonate, pH, aldolase, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine amino-transferase. Exercise caused a slight increase in lactate and pyruvate, total protein, aldolase, alanine aminotransferase, pO2, bicarbonate and pH. Glucose, free fatty acids and pCO2 levels decreased. Training caused no significant difference in these changes. However, during the year, increases in lactate and decreases in pH (resting levels) were observed.  相似文献

Two trials, involving 469 steer and heifer calves, were conducted to evaluate the practices of implanting or reimplanting suckling fall-born calves with progesterone-estradiol benzoate (PE) implants (100 mg of progesterone, 10 mg of estradiol benzoate). Calves having an average initial weight of 67 kg were randomly allocated within sex and location to remain either nonimplanted or to receive a PE implant in the late fall, in the spring just before green grass, or in both fall and spring. All animals grazed good- to excellent-quality native Bluestem range. Nonimplanted calves in Trial 1 gained .57 kg/d during the winter months and PE implants improved growth rate by 7% to .61 kg/d (P less than .05). Growth rate of calves on dry winter range in Trial 2 was only .20 kg/d, and was not affected by PE implants. Average daily gain of nonimplanted calves during the spring and summer months was .96 and .87 kg/d for trials 1 and 2, respectively. Performance of implanted calves during that period was improved an average of 4.3 to 10% (P less than .05) by PE implants in both trials regardless of when the calves were implanted. Growth rate of calves over the entire 8-mo trials was .66 kg/d for nonimplanted calves and was improved (P less than .01) to .70, .70 and .71 kg/d for calves on the two single-implant and reimplant schedules, respectively. Implanted calves gained an average of 10.4 kg more than nonimplanted calves during the study.  相似文献

Two digestion and metabolism experiments were conducted to determine effects of monensin in low-protein diets. Monensin supplementation (27 mg/kg of diet dry matter) of steers (303 kg) fed 8.7% crude protein increased (P less than .01) apparent N digestibility and N retention and decreased (P less than .01) percentage of N apparently absorbed lost in urine. Apparent digestibilities of dry matter, gross energy and acid detergent lignin were increased (P less than .05). Digestibilities of neutral detergent and acid detergent fibers were not affected by monensin. In growing wether goats (15 kg) fed 8.5% crude protein, monensin (23 mg/kg of diet dry matter) improved (P less than .01) apparent N digestibility and apparent N absorption. However, urinary N excretion also increased (P less than .05), resulting in no difference in N retention. Monensin did not affect digestibilities of dry matter or gross energy. Efficiency of feed conversion and average daily gain were improved with monensin supplementation of growing goats fed a low-protein, high-roughage diet. Monensin resulted in typical shift of acetate-to-propionate ratio in both experiments. Results suggest that improved N utilization may account for some benefits of feeding monensin.  相似文献

Infection of six guinea pigs with up to 100 third-stage larvae of Elaphostrongylus cervi produced clinical signs of severe weight loss and ataxia or death in five. These signs occurred approximately eighty days after the larvae had been given per os. Single female E. cervi sub-adults were recovered from four affected animals and both a male and female E. cervi from one animal. Individual worms were found at the base of the brain against the internal surface of the dura mater.
