Despite being a major domain of global food supply, rice?Cwheat cropping system is questioned for its contribution to carbon flux. Enhancing the organic carbon pool in this system is therefore necessary to reduce environmental degradation and maintain agricultural productivity. A field experiment (November 2002?CMarch 2006) evaluated the effects of soil management practices such as tillage, crop residue, and timing of nitrogen (N) application on soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration in the lowland of Chitwan Valley of Nepal. Rice (Oryza sativa L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were grown in rotation adding 12?Mg?ha?1?y?1 of field-dried residue. Mung-bean (Vigna radiata L.) was grown as a cover crop between the wheat and the rice. Timing of N application based on leaf color chart method was compared with recommended method of N application. At the end of the experiment SOC sequestration was quantified for five depths within 50?cm of soil profile. The difference in SOC sequestration between methods of N application was not apparent. However, soils sequestered significantly higher amount of SOC in the whole profile (0?C50?cm soil depth) with more pronounced effect seen at 0?C15?cm soil depth under no-tillage as compared with the SOC under conventional tillage. Crop residues added to no-tillage soils outperformed other treatment interactions. It is concluded that a rice?Cwheat system would serve as a greater sink of organic carbon with residue application under no-tillage system than with or without residue application when compared to the conventional tillage system in this condition. 相似文献

Cultivation of the same varieties of mungbean and blackgram across different seasons and locations is constrained by their photo‐ and thermo‐sensitive behaviour. Developing insensitive genotypes, which can fit well across all seasons, requires robust donors which would provide genes imparting this trait. This study was undertaken to identify such donors in the Vigna species. Forty‐eight accessions belonging to 13 Vigna species and eight released cultivars were evaluated under natural field conditions. Among these, two accessions, viz. V. umbellata (IC251442) and V. glabrescens (IC251372) were found photo‐ and thermo‐insensitive as these were able to flower and set pods at temperatures as high as 43.9°C and as low as 2.7°C. Pollen viability studies indicated viable pollen (>75% at 2.7°C and >85% at 41.9°C) and normal pollen tube growth at both the extremes of temperature. The identified V. glabrescens accession has long, constricted pods and dark green, mottled seeds while V. umbellata has smooth, curved pods and shining, oval, large seeds. Empirical relationships between remotely sensed vegetation indices and canopy density information, such as leaf area index
or ground cover (GC), are commonly used to derive spatial information in many precision farming operations. In this study,
we modified an existing methodology that does not depend on empirical relationships and extended it to derive crop GC from
high resolution aerial imagery. Using this procedure, GC is calculated for every pixel in the aerial imagery by dividing the
perpendicular vegetation index (PVI) of each pixel by the PVI of full canopy. The study was conducted during the summer growing
seasons of 2007 and 2008, and involves airborne and ground truth data from 13 agricultural fields in the Southern High Plains
of the USA. The results show that the method described in this study can be used to estimate crop GC from high-resolution

NMR and UV spectroscopy and molecular modeling methods were applied to probe the interaction of the two imidazolinones, imazethapyr (5-ethyl-2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)nicotinic acid) and its structural isomer CL 303,135 (5-ethyl-3-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl)picolinic acid), with metal ions. Both the imidazolinones inhibit the enzyme acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS) in vitro. However, while imazethapyr is a herbicide that is used widely in agriculture, CL303,135 does not exhibit herbicidal activity. Imazethapyr and CL303,135 exhibited considerable differences in their interactions with metals. In the metal complex of imazethapyr, the carboxyl moiety binds strongly and the pyridine nitrogen binds weakly with metals. In the case of CL303,135, both the pyridine nitrogen and the carboxyl group that are positioned ortho to each other participated strongly in the binding and were found to act together as a strong bidentate ligand to a metal ion. Both of the imidazolinones form predominantly 2:1 complexes with multivalent metal ions. However, imazethapyr binds two orders-of-magnitude more weakly (1·0×109 M -2) with metal ions compared to CL303,135 (1·7×1011 M -2). The interactions of the model compounds, nicotinic acid and picolinic acid, with metals were examined similarly. It was concluded that the strong affinity of CL303,135 for metals compared to imazethapyr may affect its absorption from soil into plants, or its translocation in plants, thereby explaining the differences in herbicidal activity of imazethapyr and CL303,135. © 1997 SCI. 相似文献

Genetic engineering can enhance abiotic stress tolerance of plants, thereby increasing productivity. The present study investigates allergenicity of osmotin protein used for developing transgenic crops. Bioinformatic analysis of osmotin was performed using SDAP and Farrp allergen databases. Osmotin was cloned in pET22b+ vector, purified to homogeneity, and analyzed for digestibility, heat stability, and IgE binding using atopic patients' sera. Osmotin showed 40-92% and 48-75% homology with allergens in SDAP and Farrp databases, respectively. These cross-reactive allergens were from apple, tomato, peach, capsicum, kiwi fruit, and cypress. Osmotin was resistant to pepsin digestion and heat treatment at 90 °C for 1 h. Osmotin protein showed dose-dependent inhibition with pooled patients' sera. It showed significant IgE binding with 22 of 117 patients' sera who were sensitized to tomato and apple, thus indicating cross-reactivity among tomato, apple, and osmotin allergens. In conclusion, osmotin was identified as a potential allergen and showed cross-reactivity with tomato and apple allergens. 相似文献
