Radar observations of comet Hyakutake (C/1996 B2) made at the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex in California have detected echoes from the nucleus and from large grains in the inner coma. The nucleus of this bright comet was estimated to be only 2 to 3 kilometers in diameter. Models of the coma echo indicate backscatter from porous, centimeter-size grains ejected anisotropically at velocities of tens of meters per second. The radar observations suggest that a comet's activity may be a poor indicator of its size and provide evidence that large grains constitute an important component of the mass loss from a typical active comet.  相似文献

A 3-year-old Gypsy Vanner stallion was presented for evaluation of intermittent recumbency, muscle fasciculations, weakness, low head carriage, shifting of weight between the hindlimbs and an elevated tail head. History, physical examination and serum alpha tocopherol concentrations were suggestive of vitamin E deficiency and equine motor neuron disease (EMND). Sacrocaudalis dorsalis medialis muscle biopsy identified myositis secondary to sarcocystosis. Treatment with alpha tocopherol, ponazuril and sulfadiazine/pyrimethamine resulted in significant improvement in muscle weakness and body condition with resolution of sarcocystosis and inflammation on repeat muscle biopsy. This case illustrates the importance of muscle biopsy in horses with neuromuscular disease as concurrent diseases may be present that require specific treatment for a positive outcome.  相似文献

Polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM), identified in 1992 in a subset of horses with exertional rhabdomyolysis, is a glycogenosis characterized by amylase-resistant polysaccharide in a small number of skeletal muscle fibers along with 1.5 to 4 times normal muscle glycogen. Extensive biochemical and physiological analyses failed to identify defects in glycogenolysis and glycolysis. In 2008, a genome-wide association analysis detected a locus on equine chromosome 10 that was strongly associated with the PSSM in Quarter Horses. Glycogen synthase 1 (GYS1), which encodes the skeletal muscle isoform of glycogen synthase (GS), was a strong candidate gene for PSSM based on its location on equine chromosome 10. Sequencing of the GYS1 gene in PSSM and control Quarter Horses identified only one single base-pair change that resulted in an amino acid substitution in the GS enzyme. Mean GS activity was higher in PSSM than control muscle homogenates in both the presence and absence of the allosteric activator glucose 6-phosphate, suggesting that the GS enzyme in horses with PSSM is constitutively active. High-grain diets increase serum insulin concentrations which further act to stimulate GS activity. An restriction fragment length polymorphism assay for the GYS1 mutation showed that 10% of the Quarter Horse breed and a minimum of 20 other breeds have the GYS1 mutation. Muscle biopsies obtained after 20 minutes of aerobic exercise revealed much higher inosine monophosphate concentrations and lower adenosine monophosphate in whole muscle and single fibers from PSSM as compared with control horse muscle. Thus, the GYS1 mutation responsible for PSSM seems to cause an energy imbalance exacerbated by high-grain diets, which results in adenine nucleotide degradation in individual muscle fibers of horses with PSSM during submaximal exercise.  相似文献

Eight standardbred horses trotted on a treadmill for 55 mins at a sub-maximal speed of 5m/sec and subsequently performed an exercise test consisting of 2 min intervals at increasing speed. Heart (HR) and respiratory (Rf) rates and venous blood samples were obtained before, during and for 5 mins after exercise. Gluteus medius muscle biopsies and rectal temperatures were taken before and after exercise. The mean HR was 132/min and the mean Rf was 156/min during the 5m/sec trotting. With 5m/sec exercise, plasma free fatty acids (FFA), glucose, creatinine and cortisol concentrations increased markedly. Blood lactate increased slightly and plasma potassium increased initially and then decreased with a lengthened duration of trotting. Within 5 mins post exercise plasma FFA, glucose and cortisol concentrations continued to rise, whereas creatinine and lactate levels declined slightly and potassium concentrations declined rapidly to below resting values. The mean intramuscular (im) glycogen utilisation was 86 mmol/kg, no significant changes occurred in creatine phosphate (CP), adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and glucose-6-phosphate (G-6-P) concentrations and muscle lactate decreased significantly. During the second exercise test mean HR was 215/min and Rf 126/min at top speed. No significant change was seen in plasma glucose whereas cortisol levels rose to a lesser extent, and creatinine lactate, ammonia and potassium concentrations to a greater extent, compared to 5 m/sec trotting. Post exercise, these parameters continued to increase except for creatinine which declined slightly and potassium which decreased rapidly. The mean im glycogen utilisation was 144 mmol/kg, ATP concentrations were unaltered, CP declined, lactate and G-6-P increased during exercise.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A field grazing trial was undertaken to monitor the health and production of crossbred sheep grazing pasture where Echium plantagineum constituted a considerable proportion of the available forage. The trial, conducted for 19 months over successive grazing seasons, demonstrated a significant difference in production, with sheep on the E. plantagineum pasture being lighter and growing less wool compared with sheep on Echium-free pasture. No mortalities involving pyrrolizidine alkaloid poisoning were recorded in sheep grazing E. plantagineum, although there was histological evidence of moderately severe liver damage associated with high liver copper concentrations in at least one sheep following the grazing of large quantities of the plant.  相似文献

To evaluate a novel elemental zinc bolus compared with a registered positive control zinc oxide bolus and assess serum zinc concentrations following concomitant treatment with a capsule containing copper oxide needles. Forty Romney-cross ewes were randomly allocated in a 2 × 2 factorial design study. On Day 0, 20 ewes received novel boluses containing elemental zinc (Investigational Veterinary Product, IVP) while 20 received a zinc oxide bolus (control; CP). Half the animals in each zinc treatment group (n = 10) were treated with a copper oxide needle capsule [Copasure® - Ewe]. Weekly, from Day −7 to 56, all ewes were assessed for signs of photosensitization, and for 10 ewes from each zinc treatment groups, samples were collected for analysis of serum GGT activity, serum zinc concentrations, faecal zinc concentrations and on Days −7 and 56, liver copper concentrations. Multivariable random-effects models assessed the effects of zinc treatment, copper treatment, treatment interactions and time on all analytes. Regression models examined associations between serum and faecal zinc concentrations and GGT activity. Low spore numbers indicated low Pithomyces chartarum challenge. Serum zinc levels were significantly higher in the IVP than in the CP group [p < 0.0001] and varied by time [p < 0.001] and positively associated with faecal zinc concentration [p < 0.001]. Copper treatment did not affect serum zinc [p = 0.82] or faecal zinc [p = 0.92] concentrations. Liver copper concentrations did not differ between zinc treatment groups on Day −7 [p = 0.6] or Day 56 [p = 0.95]. Only the CP/no copper group had no increase in liver copper concentrations.  相似文献
