Semitendinosus muscle transfer flap for external anal sphincter incompetence in a dog

A 5-year-old sexually intact female Yorkshire Terrier was referred with a history of fecal incontinence of at least 2 years and chronic intermittent colitis. The external anal sphincter to the left of the anus was intact; the external anal sphincter was not detectable to the right of the anus. To repair the defect, the semitendinosus muscle was isolated and severed 2 cm proximal to its insertion on the tibia. Care was taken to preserve the integrity of the vasculature and nerve supply in the proximal third of the muscle body. The body of the muscle was passed around the ventral and right aspects of the rectum; the cut end was secured with simple interrupted sutures dorsal to the levator ani and coccygeus muscles to simulate the external anal sphincter. After surgery, the dog could defecate normally. Absence of a portion of the external anal sphincter may be congenital or the result of anorectal trauma, rectal prolapse, severe perineal disease, or surgical resection. The use of a semitendinosus muscle flap for treatment of fecal incontinence secondary to sphincter incompetence in dogs may be a viable alternative to euthanasia.     

Associations between age or sex and prevalence of gastric ulceration in Standardbred racehorses in training

OBJECTIVE: To determine associations between age, sex, or medical treatment and prevalence and severity of gastric ulceration in Standardbred racehorses in training. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. ANIMALS: 224 Standardbred racehorses in training. PROCEDURE: Gastroscopy was performed on each horse, and mucosal ulceration was graded from 0 (normal mucosa, no lesions) to 3 (extensive, often coalescing, lesions with areas of deep ulceration). Associations between age, sex, or treatment and prevalence and severity of ulcers were evaluated. RESULTS: Prevalence of gastric ulceration was 87%. Although there was little association between age and prevalence of ulcers, there was an association between age and severity of ulcers. Most 2-year-old horses (57.7%) had an ulcer score of 0 or 1. In all other age groups, most (58% to 82.61%) of horses had an ulcer score of 2 or 3. Although overall prevalence of ulceration was comparable among sex groups, the relative risk for gastric ulceration increased with age in castrated males, whereas it decreased in females and sexually intact males. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Gastric ulceration is common in Standardbred horses in race training. Severity is higher in horses > or = 3 years of age than in 2-year-old horses. Relative risk for ulceration increases with age in castrated males.     

Tacrolimus-FK506 induced immunosuppression in gnotobiotic piglets

Tacrolimus (FK506), an inhibitor of calcineurin, is an immunosuppressive agent used in clinical trials of transplant patients. Although FK506 targets Ca(2+)-mediated T-cell signaling, phenotype(s) of the specific target cells and the corresponding cytokine pathways are not well known. In this study, the impact of FK506 on number and characteristic of T-cells in selected lymphoid tissues of gnotobiotic (GB) piglets was determined. FK506-treated GB piglets were compared with untreated GB and conventional piglets. The T-helper, cytotoxic, natural killer, double-positive, and activated T-cell populations were analyzed in suspensions of mononuclear cells isolated from thymus, mesenteric lymph nodes and peripheral blood. In vitro secretion of interleukin-8 and interferon-gamma in concanavalin A-stimulated lymphoid cell-cultures was measured by ELISA. Daily intramuscular treatment of GB piglets with 1mg/kg of FK506 from birth for 4 weeks resulted in lowered (P<0.05) in vitro secretion of interferon-gamma and interleukin-8. Moreover, depletions of MNC in systemic and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissues were observed in piglets treated with FK506. The depletions of mononuclear cells and low levels of interferon-gamma and interleukin-8 in piglets treated with FK506 were accompanied by lower proportion of CD3+, CD2+CD4+ and CD2+CD8+ T-cell phenotypes in peripheral blood but not in thymus and mesenteric lymph nodes. These results indicate that FK506-treatment causes immunosuppression in GB piglet, and this effect could be exploited further to study opportunistic pathogens in pig model.     

RADIOGRAPHIC ANATOMY OF THE CRIBRIFORM PLATE (LAMINA CRIBROSA)

The radiographic appearance of the cribriform plate was investigated in 16 canine cadaver heads. The cribriform plate appeared as a "V"-shaped multilinear bone-opaque stripe in the caudal nasal region in projections perpendicular to the hard palate in 6 dogs with a skull index between 50.00 and 54.00. In 9 dogs with a skull index between 55.40 and 74.40, the cribriform plate had a more "C"-shaped and sharp appearance. In vertically oblique projections with an obliquity greater than 20 degrees, the cribriform plate lost its sharp outline and finally (40 degrees) disappeared. In lateral projections the cribriform plate appeared as a "C"-shaped interrupted bone-opaque stripe in all 16 dogs. In more brachycephalic dogs frontal bone structures superimposed on the cribriform plate on ventrodorsal and dorsoventral views and accentuated the radiographic appearance of the plate. Vertically oblique views separated both structures to produce two lines.     

A riverscape perspective on habitat associations among riverine bird assemblages in the Lake Champlain Basin,USA

The riverscape perspective recognizes the heterogeneous habitat types within the stream corridor as a single, integrated ecological unit operating across spatial scales. Although there is ample evidence that the riverscape notion is appropriate in understanding the physical phenomena of stream corridors, significantly less attention has focused on its ecological ramifications. To this end, we surveyed riverscape habitat variables and bird community characteristics in the Champlain Valley of Vermont, USA. From the data collected, we used information theoretic methodology (AIC_c) to model relationships between bird community attributes and key habitat variables across the riverscape. Our models with the greatest support suggest that riverine bird communities respond to a suite of characteristics; representing a variety of riverscape habitats at the in-stream, floodplain, and riparian levels. Channel slope, drainage area, percent conifers, and in-stream habitat condition were among the most influential variables. We found that piscivores are potentially important indicators of riverscape condition, responding to a host of variables across the riverscape. Our results endorse a holistic approach to assessing and managing the mosaic of patches in the riverscape and suggest that a riverscape approach has significant conservation potential.     

The aetiology of spinal deformity in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L.: influence of genetic factors on the frequency and severity in freshwater stages

A radiographic study was carried out on 2-year groups of pre-smolt parr to detect the comparative frequency of vertebral change in a range of defined pedigreed families of high growth rate of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., reared under identical conditions. The observed frequency of deformity was related to the observed deformity level in the seawater parental generation, and to a potentially uncontrolled environmental determinant, i.e. stripping date. High and low parental deformity groups of families were found to produce offspring that had very similar levels of radiographically detectable spinal deformities in the pre-smolt parr, suggesting no genetic link. With regard to stripping date, the overall incidence was nearly half that seen in the preceding year (8.7% cf 16.6%). However, a non-significant trend to fewer radiographic spinal deformities was seen in the later stripping period.     

The acute phase reaction detected in dogs by concanavalin A binding

Using a kinetic turbidimetric assay based on the binding of serum glycoprotein to concanavalin A the acute phase reaction has been detected in dogs. Raised levels of glycoprotein were found in dogs which had undergone surgery, had been treated with bacterial endotoxin and had various inflammatory conditions.
