Abstract. Soil fertility is defined as the ability of a soil to provide the conditions required for plant growth. It is a result of the physical, chemical and biological processes that act together to provide nutrients, water, aeration and stability to the plant, as well as freedom from any substances that may inhibit growth. Within this definition, it is useful to distinguish between those components of fertility which change relatively slowly, perhaps over the course of a rotation, or in some cases, decades, and the more immediate contribution from materials such as fertilizers and manures. The term 'inherent fertility' is used to describe these more stable characteristics, while recognising that they are, to a large extent, products of soil management. We conclude that, although nutrient management in organically managed soils is fundamentally different to soils managed conventionally, the underlying processes supporting soil fertility are not. The same nutrient cycling processes operate in organically farmed soils as those that are farmed conventionally although their relative importance and rates may differ. Nutrient pools in organically farmed soils are also essentially the same as in conventionally managed soils but, in the absence of regular fertilizer inputs, nutrient reserves in less-available pools will be of greater significance.  相似文献

Yeast-derived haze-protective mannoprotein material (HPM) offers protection to white wines from commercially unacceptable turbidities. HPM extraction methods have been evaluated using three winemaking strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Digestion with Zymolyase of cells pretreated with DTE and EDTA gave the greatest yields of active material. Heat treatment of cells with SDS also released active material but the quantities were low. Treatment of the cells in an autoclave or with a French pressure device was less effective. A detailed study was conducted on the strain Maurivin PDM. SDS was not necessary to extract HPM from PDM; boiling the cells for 5 min in Tris buffer was sufficient. HPM could also be extracted with EDTA during the pretreatment of the cells prior to Zymolyase digestion. The data suggest that HPM was noncovalently linked to other cell wall components and loosely associated with the cell wall. An immunological investigation showed that a specific mannoprotein with haze-protective activity, HPF1, was located primarily on the outermost and innermost layers of the cell wall.  相似文献

Nineteen Holstein-Friesian bull calves were inoculated with 2.4 × 106 sporocysts of Eimeria zuernii by stomach tube. The calves were divided into three groups 10 days after infection. The first group (seven calves) was treated with monensin (1 mg/kg body weight daily) from the 10th–20th day after infection; the second group (six calves) with amprolium (10 mg/kg body weight daily) for the same period of time and the third group (six calves) acted as infected controls. Both drugs were effective in preventing clinical signs, in reducing rates of weight gain and in suppressing oocyst production. The calves were reinfected with E. zuernii 35 days after the initial infection. The calves of all three groups were resistant to the second infection with E. zuernii as measured by rates of weight gain, fecal oocyst output and lack of clinical signs.  相似文献

A total of 36 calves were used in three experiments to test the efficacy of a potassium thiocyanate extract of Pasteurella haemolytica in protecting against experimental pneumonia. In each of experiments A and B, 12 calves were divided into three equal groups. The first group was vaccinated with an aerosol of a potassium thiocyanate extract twice, two weeks apart; the second group was vaccinated subcutaneously once only with the same extract. The third group of calves in both experiments remained as unvaccinated controls. In experiment C, six calves were vaccinated intramuscularly and six were left as controls. Approximately one month after vaccination all calves were challenged with an aerosol of bovine herpesvirus 1 (isolate 108) followed in 4 d by an aerosol of P. haemolytica type A1 (the same strain from which the potassium thiocyanate extract had been made). Varying degrees of protection against subsequent development of experimental pneumonic pasteurellosis in cattle were seen in vaccinated calves as compared to control calves in these experiments. The results indicate that protection of cattle against pneumonic pasteurellosis may prove possible with a sub-cellular extract of P. haemolytica.  相似文献

Lowland heath is an internationally important habitat type that has greatly declined in abundance throughout Western Europe. In recent years this has led to a growing interest in the restoration of heathland on agricultural land. This generally requires the use of chemical treatments to return soil chemical conditions to those appropriate for the support of heathland ecosystems. However, the potential for negative impacts on the environment due to the potential of these treatments to increase the availability of trace metals via raised soil acidity requires investigation. A large-scale field study investigated the effect of two chemical treatments used in heathland restoration, elemental sulphur and ferrous sulphate, on soil acidity and whether it is possible to predict the effect of the treatments on availability of two potentially toxic cations (Al and Cd) in the soil along with their subsequent accumulation in the shoots of the grass Agrostis capillaris. Results showed that both treatments decreased soil pH, but that only elemental sulphur produced a pH similar to heathland soil. The availability of Al, measured by extraction with 1 M ammonium nitrate, could not be predicted by soil pH, depth in the soil and total Al concentration in the soil. By contrast, availability of Cd could be predicted from these three variables. Concentrations of both Al and Cd in the shoots of A. capillaris showed no significant relationship with the extractable concentration in the soil. Results are discussed in light of the possible environmental impacts of the chemical restoration techniques.  相似文献

Abstract. In organic farming systems, fertilizing materials can be used when potassium (K) deficiency is shown, but such systems are dominantly nitrogen (N) limited and this is likely to affect crop utilization of K. The supply of K to grass/clover from a range of mineral and organically based K fertilizers and its interaction with N supply were studied in a greenhouse experiment. Sequential plant cuts were taken for yield and nutrient content determinations in crop and soil. Crop yields were limited by N: where N supply was increased either through the mineralization of N from organic materials (rapemeal, farmyard manure) or inorganic fertilizer, plant yields increased significantly. Grass/clover responded better to additional K where sufficient N was available. However, yield responses to K were generally small, even in the presence of adequate N. Of the different fertilizers, kali and MSL-K increased yields above those of the control by less than 5%, sylvinite, DKSI and farmyard manure by 10–20%, and rapemeal and potassium sulphate by more than 25%. In all treatments, K offtakes in the grass/clover were considerably greater than fertilizer K inputs. The grass/clover showed an increased uptake of Na where insufficient K was available. However, the Mg content of the grass/clover was not adversely affected by K fertilizer application. Organic farmers need to consider the soil K status, the rotational nutrient budget, the supply of all nutrients in fertilizing materials and nutrient interactions to achieve effective K management in organic farming systems.  相似文献
