Background

Wastewater from sewage treatment plants contains high levels of nutrients, which can be used for plant nutrition. Classical wastewater treatment plants use complex microbial consortia of autotrophic and heterotrophic microorganisms for biological wastewater treatment. Certain autotrophic microalgae (e.g., species of the genera Chlorella, Scenedesmus, and Pediastrum) accumulate nutrients from wastewater very effectively.

Aims

We investigated the potential of microalgae biomass obtained from a prototype wastewater treatment plant as a source of nutrients for crops, focusing on nitrogen.

Methods

We provided wheat plants with different levels of algae biomass equivalent to 60, 120, and 180 kg N per hectare or with mineral fertilizer (N, P, and K) equivalent to the amounts contained in the algal biomass. Physiological and phenotypic traits were measured during growth, including vegetation indices, photosynthetic performance, growth, and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). In addition, the adundances of Bacteria, Archaea and fungi and genes of ammonium oxidizing Bacteria and Archaea were determined in the rhizosphere of differently fertilized plants.

Results

Microalgal application at fertilizer levels of 120 and 180 kg N ha–1 showed significantly improved physiological performance, growth, yield and nutrient uptake compared to the unfertilized control. Nevertheless, their yields and NUE were lower than with the application of equal amounts of mineral fertilization, while the adundance of rhizosphere microbes and ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms were not significantly affected.

Conclusions

Microalgae from wastewater treatments form a suitable source of organic fertilizer for wheat plants with only moderate reductions in N use efficiency compared to mineral fertilizer.  相似文献

Background – There is a high mortality rate in patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) or sepsis. Therefore, an early diagnosis and prognostic assessment is important for optimal therapeutic intervention. The objective of the study was to evaluate if baseline values and changes in serum C-reactive protein (CRP) might predict survival in dogs with SIRS and sepsis.
Design – Prospective study; July 2004 to July 2005.
Setting – Small Animal Clinic, Berlin, Clinic of Small Animal Medicine, Munich.
Animals – Sixty-one dogs.
Measurements and Main Results – For the CRP analysis blood was drawn on day 0, 1, and 2; CRP was measured using a commercial ELISA test kit. Thirteen dogs suffered from nonseptic SIRS and 48 dogs from sepsis. The 14-day survival rate was 61% (69% nonseptic SIRS, 58% sepsis). Serum CRP was higher in sick dogs compared with controls ( P <0.001). Over the 3-day period surviving dogs ( n =31) displayed a significantly greater decrease in CRP than nonsurvivors ( n =10) ( P =0.001). No correlation was found between the initial CRP concentrations and the survival rate. The changes in CRP corresponded to the survival rate ( P =0.01).
Conclusion – There was no significant relationship between the survival rate in dogs with nonseptic SIRS or sepsis and the initial serum CRP concentrations. There was a correlation between decreasing CRP concentrations and recovery from disease. However, the changes in CRP concentrations over a 3-day period correctly predicted survival in 94% of dogs and death in 30% of the dogs (false positive rate 22%).  相似文献

In the search for novel bioactive compounds from sponge-derived microorganisms, we have recently identified two structurally and biosynthetically unprecedented fungal metabolites, the novel-type alkaloids sorbicillactone A and sorbicillactone B. Sorbicillactone A is active against leukemia cells without showing notable cytotoxicity. Therefore, we have developed an efficient process for its biotechnological production and isolation on a large scale supplying sufficient material for the ongoing preclinical investigations and structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies.  相似文献

Nmim content in the soil, N-fertilization and N uptake of winter wheat in the international organic nitrogen long-term fertilization experiment (IOSDV) Berlin-Dahlem During the 9th and 10th year of the long-term IOSDV field experiment micro plots were put in three treatments. Labelled15 N (160 resp. 110 kg/ha N as ammonium sulfate) was fertilized to winter wheat subdivided into three portions. Nmin in soil was determined five times during the season, plant biomass was harvested at different growth stages and N uptake was calculated. Using the15 N-technique permitted a discrimination between fertilizer-N and soil-N. Preferential uptake of fertilizer-N by the wheat crop but also immobilisation in soil were observed until June. Subsequently the immobilized N was remineralized and assimilated by wheat. But the native Nmin of soil was minimaly utilized during the initial growth of wheat. Therefore the absolute amount of soluble N temporarily increased caused by a mineralisation of the organic matter.  相似文献

Phytoestrogens are putatively able to enhance the biosynthesis of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), but have also been shown to affect fish growth dose dependently. The aim of the present study was to identify a concentration for the phytoestrogen genistein and the phytoestrogen metabolite equol that further increases the endogenous biosynthesis of EPA and DHA without impairing fish growth. Juvenile rainbow trout (87.2 ± 0.3 g) were fed seven diets on a fixed ratio for 8 weeks. A vegetable oil‐based diet served as a control diet and was supplemented with equol (EQ) and genistein (G), respectively, at 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3% of feed dry matter (1, 2 and 3). Growth and nutrient composition of whole body homogenates were not affected by dietary treatments. EPA and DHA levels in liver, fillet and whole body samples were not significantly increased by EQ and G diets. Fish fed EQ diets showed dose dependently increased liver weights and C18:0 liver levels, indicating estrogen‐like effects at increased dietary dosages. In conclusion, the utilization of equol and genistein in plant oil‐based diets in order to enhance the biosynthesis of EPA and DHA seems not reasonable in rainbow trout.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate hydrolysis lignin (H‐lignin), derived from wood biomass, as a multifunctional component of aquafeeds. Atlantic salmon (28.8 ± 1.1 g) were fed diets for 16 weeks, which included two H‐lignin types (HL1 and HL2) at 15, 30 or 50 g/kg (wt/wt) or a control diet (no added H‐lignin). HL1 was extracted with water such that no soluble sugar and oligosaccharides remain, while HL2 contains a higher fraction of water‐soluble sugars and oligosaccharides. Pellet durability and density were measured. After 16 weeks, salmon were measured for weight and length, and whole carcass, hindgut and digesta contents were sampled. Pellet durability increased from the control to 30 g/kg H‐lignin but decreased at 50 g/kg. Salmon fed diets with HL1 at 15 and 30 g/kg showed higher weight gain and lower feed conversion ratio compared with salmon fed the control diet and 50 g/kg HL1. There were no significant differences in whole‐body composition or intestinal morphology. Microbial characterization (16S) revealed lower abundance of Proteobacteria, higher abundance of Mycoplasmataceae and increasing Lactobacillaceae abundance with higher HL1 inclusion. This study demonstrates that HL1 (at 15 and 30 g/kg) shows potential as a functional feed additive for salmon.  相似文献

Background: Iohexol is a nonradioactive marker that has been used successfully to test intestinal permeability in humans with inflammatory bowel disease. There is evidence in dogs that iohexol shares a similar permeability pathway as 51chromium‐EDTA, the gold standard marker. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine an optimal oral iohexol dosage for an intestinal permeability serum test (IPST) and to use the test to estimate intestinal permeability in healthy dogs. Methods: Eight clinically healthy dogs free of gastrointestinal, liver, and pancreatic disease were used in the study. Dosages of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 mL/kg of Omnipaque‐350 (iohexol) were administered to 2 dogs at weekly intervals. Iohexol concentration was determined in serum samples obtained hourly for 6 hours after administration by high‐performance liquid chromatography. Using the optimal dosage, iohexol was administered to 8 dogs twice, 6–36 days (mean 10 days) apart, and coefficients of variation (CVs) for iohexol concentration were calculated. Results: A dosage of 2.0 mL/kg was chosen as optimal for the IPST, based on ease of iohexol detection in serum, intestinal contrast, and clinical effects of iohexol. Following administration of this dose to healthy dogs, mean (±SD) serum iohexol concentrations were 8.74±4.38, 11.89±5.67, 12.40±5.47, 9.23±5.54, 7.61±5.13, and 5.27±2.67 μg/mL at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 hours after iohexol administration, respectively. CVs between the 2 test days were 28–45%. Conclusions: Using the iohexol dosage established in this study, the iohexol IPST was easy to perform as a marker for intestinal permeability in dogs. Further studies to establish reference intervals and evaluate the diagnostic value of the iohexol IPST in dogs with gastrointestinal disease are warranted.  相似文献
