There is continued incentive for the development of alternative feed resources for use in swine production. The availability of distillery by-products may be expected to increase as the use of corn and cereal grains for ethanol production expands. The acceptability of distillery by-products, milling by-products, forages and other fibrous feeds as energy sources for swine depends on such factors as cell wall content of the plant, degree of microbial fermentation in the large intestine, and extent of absorption and utilization of the volatile fatty acids produced. Physiological effects of dietary fiber, including effects on gastric emptying, rate of transit of digesta, gut motility, digestive secretions, and absorption and utilization of breakdown products need quantification. Limited evidence suggests that there are genetic differences in the response of pigs to dietary fiber and in their ability to utilize it as an energy source. Recombinant DNA technology offers the possibility of cloning cellulase genes from microorganisms for application in swine feeding programs. The extent to which biotechnology will be applied in swine feeding will depend ultimately on the economic incentive for developmental effort and on unknown biological limitations of the pig and its gastrointestinal microbial ecosystem.  相似文献

Samples of digesta from the ruminal upper strata (RUS) and feces (F) were taken from four ruminally cannulated steers fed Coastal bermudagrass hay (78% NDF) in the long form to evaluate the effects of feeding level and time postfeeding on particle breakdown. The experimental design was a 4 x 4 Latin square with 18-d periods. Treatments based on previous intakes were set at 50, 70, 90 and 110% (3.1, 4.4, 5.5 and 6.7 kg/d, respectively) of feed consumed per animal and fed at 12-h intervals. Samples were taken at 2, 6 and 12h postfeeding and wet-sieved. Dry matter weight distribution of total recovered particles was used to partition RUS and F digesta among percentages of large (greater than 4.0 mm), medium (greater than 4.0 and less than or equal to 1.0 mm), small (less than 1.0 and greater than or eual to .125 mm) and fine (less than .125 and greater than or equal to .0027 mm) particles. With increasing feeding level, the percentage of medium RUS particles increased linearly (P less than .02), whereas the percentage of fine RUS particles decreased linearly (P less than .01). Increased time postfeeding resulted in a linear decrease in the percentage of large RUS particles (P less than .01), a linear increase in the percentage of small RUS particles (P less than .01) and in a quadratic increase in the percentage of fine RUS particles (P less than .01). Percentage of medium RUS particles remained unchanged. Increasing feeding level resulted in linear increases in mean RUS (P less than .01) and F (P less than .02) particle sizes. Percentages of RUS and F material passing through a 1.0-mm sieve averaged 52.8 and 88.8%, respectively. Animal-to-animal variation in proportions of RUS and mixed reticuloruminal particles was not entirely removed by rumination and was still reflected in the percentages of F particles. Factors such as particle entrapment in the fiber mat, reticular sedimentation, changes in specific gravity, swelling and hydration capacity, reticuloruminal motility and amount of digesta exiting per contraction appear to be more important than particle size reduction in the regulation of the passage of digesta from the reticulorumen.  相似文献

A 2 X 2 factorial arrangement with two genotypes of pigs (genetically obese and lean) and two dietary treatments (basal, a 16% protein corn-soybean meal standard grower diet, and basal +220 ppm thyroprotein as iodinated casein) was used. The 28 gilts were housed individually and fed ad libitum from 121 d of age until slaughtered at 99 kg body weight. Compared with lean pigs, genetically obese pigs had significantly lower average daily gain and gain/feed, greater backfat thickness, smaller loin eye area, shorter carcass length and lower circulating plasma triiodothyronine (T3) concentration. However, both total plasma and free thyroxine (T4) concentrations were similar comparing obese and lean pigs. Supplementation with thyroprotein increased circulating plasma concentration of both total and free T4 and produced interactions with genotype in affecting daily gain and gain/feed of pigs. Thyroprotein reduced both daily gain and gain/feed in obese pigs, but increased daily gain and gain/feed in lean pigs. It is suggested, similar to the case with obese mice, that heat production of our genetically obese pigs may be more sensitive to thyroprotein administration compared with similar treatment of lean animals.  相似文献

In an experiment to determine the effects of mastication and microbial contamination on in situ forage disappearance, samples of masticated (M) or nonmasticated alfalfa hay (AH), orchardgrass hay (OGH) and bermudagrass hay (BGH) were incubated in the rumen of two steers for 6, 12, 24, 48 and 96 h. Using diaminopimelic acid as a marker, microbial DM and CP contamination ranged from 10.3 to 22.3% and 46.3 to 95.3% of residual DM and CP, respectively. Percentage contamination was influenced by both time of incubation and forage treatment (P less than .001). Corrected DM and CP disappearances (DMD and CPD) were higher than apparent disappearances (P less than .001). Maximal NDF and ADF disappearances (NDFD and ADFD) obtained at 96 h were 58.2, 52.4; 62.7, 62.3 and 56.7, 52.6% for AH, OGH and BGH, respectively. Lag times (h) for corrected DMD and CPD were shorter (at least P less than .05) than for apparent disappearances, except for corrected CPD of AH. There were no differences (P greater than .10) in lag time of NDFD or ADFD among forages. Rates of disappearance (%/h) of corrected DMD and CPD were faster (at least P less than .01) than for apparent disappearances. The total quantity of microbial CP (mg CP/g DM) associated with residues varied with time depending on forage type (P less than .001). There was a significant relationship between the quantity of microbial CP contamination and the extent of disappearance. Masticated forages followed trends similar to those of nonmasticated forages, but the effect of mastication was not consistent. Results support the need for microbial correction of in situ forage residues.  相似文献

Effects of diluting the energy content of a corn-soybean meal diet with either alfalfa meal or corn cobs on nutrient digestibility and rate of passage of feed residues and particle markers were measured in crossbred (Yorkshire X Landrace X Chester White X Large White) barrows with a mean body weight of about 80 kg. The excretion pattern in the feces of Cr-mordanted diet and of rare earths initially bound individually to the mixed diet or to the corn or soybean meal suggested a model having a single age-dependent compartment with time delay. The compartmental turnover rate parameter (lambda 1) estimated by this model did not differ for the rare earths individually used to mark the corn-soybean meal diet (Yb), the corn (La) or the soybean meal (Sm). In contrast, lambda 1 for Cr was smaller (P less than .001) than that of the mean for the three rare earths. The residence time due to displacement flow (tau) did not differ among markers. These results were interpreted to indicate that the high specific gravity of Cr-mordanted feed slowed flow due to mixing but not due to displacement. Correlations between lambda 1 and tau were less than .71. These results suggested that the flow of rare earths initially bound to feed ingredients provides a reasonable estimate of the flow of their undigested residues through the gastrointestinal tracts of nonruminant animals. Inclusion of the fibrous feeds reduced digestibility of dry matter, cell contents, crude protein and acid detergent lignin and increased digestibility of cell walls, cellulose and acid detergent fiber. Digestibilities of cellulose and acid detergent fiber were greater with alfalfa than with corn cobs as the fiber source. Differences in digestibility of crude protein and acid detergent fiber existed due to litter in one replicate of the experiment. Variation in digestibility was not significantly related to variation in lambda 1 or tau within or among treatments and litters. This suggests that variations in lambda 1 and tau were not important causes of the observed variation in digestibility.  相似文献

Eight Toggenburg wether goats were fed either Coastal bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) or orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata)-alfalfa (Medicago sativa) hay (57:43%) in a reversal design. Four markers were used to study the movement of different digesta fractions: erbium for large particles greater than 1,700 microns; ytterbium for medium particles less than 1,700 microns and greater than 500 microns; chromium for small particles less than 500 microns and greater than 32 microns; and cobalt to follow liquid passage. Fecal samples were collected every 4 h for 6 d. The excretion curves obtained for every marker in each animal were used for model selection. One-compartment gamma age-dependent models (gamma 2, 3 and 4 age-dependent), two-compartment (gamma 2 and gamma 3 age-dependent, age-independent) models and a biexponential model were fitted to the data. Residual sums of squares and the Davidson and MacKinnon test were used to select the most appropriate models. These procedures indicated that the models best describing the movement of different digesta fractions through the gastrointestinal tract of goats, in this experiment, were the biexponential model for liquids, gamma 2 two-compartment model for small and medium particles and gamma 3 two-compartment model for large particles. To accurately describe the behavior of different components of digesta in the digestive tract, different mathematical models are required. In general, models that describe the movement of large particles have higher orders of age-dependency than models that describe the passage of liquids or small particles.  相似文献

Data on ewe body weights and on lamb birth and weaning weights and survival rates were recorded on a total of 557 multiparous Rambouillet, Hampshire X Suffolk and Synthetic I (composite of Finnish Landrace, Rambouillet and Polled Dorset) ewes in two experiments started after the first trimester of gestation. In Exp. 1, a 2 X 2 factorial arrangement of treatments included all combinations of low (.24% in gestation and .48% in lactation), or high (.80%) dietary Ca and low (20 ppm) or high (74 ppm) dietary Zn. No effect of dietary Ca or Zn level and no Ca X Zn interaction with respect to number of lambs born or weaned, birth weight, weaning weight or survival rate of the lambs or body weight of the ewes was shown. Mean number of lambs born was 1.63 +/- .71 with a survival rate of 85.0 +/- .3% and a weaning weight (59 d) of 19.4 +/- 4.4 kg. Experiment 2 was a repeat of Exp. 1 except that two intramuscular injections of vitamins A, D and E (d 65 and 93 of experiment) were given to one-half of the ewes in each diet group. There was no effect of dietary Ca or Zn level or of vitamin administration on ewe body weight changes, number of lambs born (1.89 +/- .55), survival rate (86.6 +/- .3%), lamb birth weight 4.6 +/- 1.5 kg) or lamb weaning weight (23.2 +/- 7.2 kg).
