OBJECTIVE: To determine concentrations of 2 acute-phase proteins (serum amyloid A [SAA] and lipopolysaccharide-binding protein [LBP]) in serum samples obtained from horses with colic and identify relationships among these acute-phase proteins and clinical data. ANIMALS: 765 horses with naturally developing gastrointestinal tract diseases characterized by colic (ie, clinical signs indicative of abdominal pain) and 79 healthy control horses; all horses were examined at 2 university teaching hospitals. PROCEDURE: Serum concentrations of SAA and LBP were determined by immunoturbidometric and dot-blot assays, respectively. RESULTS: SAA and LBP concentrations were determined for 718 and 765 horses with colic, respectively. Concentrations of SAA were significantly higher in nonsurvivors than in survivors, and horses with enteritis or colitis and conditions characterized by chronic inflammation (eg, abdominal abscesses, peritonitis, or rectal tears) had SAA concentrations significantly greater than those for horses with other conditions. Serum concentrations of LBP did not correlate with outcome, disease process, or portion of the gastrointestinal tract affected. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Circulating concentrations of SAA were significantly higher at admission in horses with colic attributable to conditions having a primary inflammatory cause (eg, enteritis, colitis, peritonitis, or abdominal abscesses) and were higher in horses that failed to survive the episode of colic, compared with concentrations in horses that survived. Serum concentrations of LBP did not correlate with survival. Analysis of these findings suggests that evaluation of SAA concentrations may be of use in identifying horses with colic attributable to diseases that have inflammation as a primary component of pathogenesis.  相似文献

A selective broth enrichment technique was used to study the distribution of Rhodococcus equi in soil and grazing animals. Rhodococcus equi was isolated from 54% of soils examined and from the gut contents, rectal faeces and dung of all grazing herbivorous species examined. Rhodococcus equi was not isolated from the faeces or dung of penned animals which did not have access to grazing. The isolation rate from dung was much higher than from other samples and this was found to be due to the ability of R. equi to multiply more readily in dung. Delayed hypersensitivity tests were carried out on horses, sheep and cattle, but only horses reacted significantly. The physiological characteristics of R. equi and the nature of its distribution in the environment suggested that R. equi is a soil organism.  相似文献

The amount of energy derived from fat in foods is a requirement of U.S. nutrition labeling legislation and a significant factor in diet development by health professionals. Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has been used to predict total utilizable energy in cereal foods for nutrition labeling purposes, and in the current study, was investigated as a method for evaluation of the amount of energy derived from fat. Using NIR reflectance spectra (1104-2494 nm) of ground cereal samples and reference values obtained by calorimetry and by calculation, modified PLS regression models were developed for the prediction of percent energy from fat and energy from fat/g. The models were able to predict the percent of utilizable energy derived from fat with SECV and R(2) of 1.86-1.89% of kcal (n = 51, range 0-43.0) and 0.98, respectively, and SEP and r(2) of 1.74% of kcal (n = 55, range 0-38.0) and 0.98, respectively, when used to predict independent validation samples. Results indicate that NIR spectroscopy provides useful methods for predicting the energy derived from fat in food products.  相似文献

Nutritional intervention early in the course of critical illness in humans and animals can have a significant impact on morbidity and mortality. Enteral delivery of nutrients is less technically demanding, more physiologic, and less expensive than parenteral nutrition. Furthermore, as complete bowel rest during critical illness can be associated with detrimental intestinal structural and functional changes ultimately resulting in bacterial translocation from the gut, direct delivery of nutrients to the gastrointestinal tract is preferred in patients with sufficient gastrointestinal function to allow digestion and absorption of nutrients. Once the decision to "feed the gut" has been established, there are several routes of enteral nutrient delivery available. A sound knowledge of gastrointestinal function, anticipated duration of enteral support, and co-moribund conditions will help the clinician tailor a plan of nutrient delivery that optimally meets each patient's needs. This article will review available routes of nutrient delivery to the gastrointestinal tract, and discuss indications and contraindications for each.  相似文献

A total of 227 field samples from naturally exposed foals aged between 3 weeks and 6 months were used in an evaluation of a peptide-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for diagnosis of Rhodococcus equi infection. A biotinylated peptide derived from the virulence-associated protein A (VapA) of R. equi, a horse pathogen, was synthesized and designated as PN11-14. The peptide corresponds to the N-terminal B-cell epitope TSLNLQKDEPNGRASDTAGQ of the VapA protein. Based upon a serum immunoglobulin (Ig)G titre of 512 as a positive cut-off value for the R. equi infection, the ELISA provided the overall sensitivity of 47.62%, specificity of 69.67% and an accuracy of 59.47% with a positive predictive value of 57.47% for true R. equi pneumonia. The assay was improved by detecting VapA-specific IgGb antibodies against N-terminal B-cell epitope of the VapA protein rather than IgG antibodies. The VapA-IgGb ELISA showed the overall sensitivity of 70.47%, specificity of 72.13% and accuracy of 71.36% with a positive predictive value of 68.52%. Diagnosis of R. equi disease in 6-week-old foals showed that the VapA-IgGb ELISA provided an increasing trend (P=0.0572) in sensitivity of 82.4% in comparison with the VapA-IgG ELISA which showed the sensitivity of 58.8%. However, differences in specificity of both tests were statistically insignificant (P=0.357) as analysed by the McNemar test. These results indicated that detection of VapA-specific IgGb antibodies may be a better predictor of R. equi disease in foals.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical characteristics and breeds affected with bacterial keratitis and compare patterns of resistance in bacterial isolates over time in dogs. DESIGN: Retrospective cross-sectional study. ANIMALS: 97 dogs with bacterial keratitis. PROCEDURE: Dogs with bacterial keratitis were identified from teaching hospital medical records at the Universities of Tennessee and Florida during the years 1993 to 2003. Data were collected pertaining to breed, Schirmer tear test results, treatments administered at the time of initial examination, bacterial species isolated, and resistance to selected antimicrobials. RESULTS: 66% of the dogs were brachycephalic, 54% had tear production < 15 mm/min, and 29% were receiving a corticosteroid at the time of initial examination. The most common bacteria isolated were Staphylococcus intermedius (29%), beta-hemolytic Streptococcus spp (17%), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (21%). Staphylococcus intermedius isolates had limited resistance to certain antimicrobials. More than 80% of beta-hemolytic Streptococcus spp isolates were resistant to neomycin, polymyxin B, and tobramycin. Isolates of P aeruginosa were susceptible to tobramycin and gentamicin and had limited resistance to ciprofloxacin and enrofloxacin. Among bacterial species isolated, there was no evidence of development of antimicrobial resistance over time. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Data suggested that administration of ciprofloxacin or a combination of a first-generation cephalosporin and tobramycin may be used in the treatment of bacterial keratitis while awaiting results of bacterial culture and susceptibility testing. Evidence suggests that current methods of medical management of bacterial keratitis are not associated with increased antimicrobial resistance.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of ketamine, magnesium sulfate, and their combination on the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of isoflurane (ISO-MAC) in goats. ANIMALS: 8 adult goats. PROCEDURES: Anesthesia was induced with isoflurane delivered via face mask. Goats were intubated and ventilated to maintain normocapnia. After an appropriate equilibration period, baseline MAC (MAC(B)) was determined and the following 4 treatments were administered IV: saline (0.9% NaCl) solution (loading dose [LD], 30 mL/20 min; constant rate infusion [CRI], 60 mL/h), magnesium sulfate (LD, 50 mg/kg; CRI, 10 mg/kg/h), ketamine (LD, 1 mg/kg; CRI, 25 microg/kg/min), and magnesium sulfate (LD, 50 mg/kg; CRI, 10 mg/kg/h) combined with ketamine (LD, 1 mg/kg; CRI, 25 microg/kg/min); then MAC was redetermined. RESULTS: Ketamine significantly decreased ISOMAC by 28.7 +/- 3.7%, and ketamine combined with magnesium sulfate significantly decreased ISOMAC by 21.1 +/- 4.1%. Saline solution or magnesium sulfate alone did not significantly change ISOMAC. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Ketamine and ketamine combined with magnesium sulfate, at doses used in the study, decreased the end-tidal isoflurane concentration needed to maintain anesthesia, verifying the clinical impression that ketamine decreases the end-tidal isoflurane concentration needed to maintain surgical anesthesia. Magnesium, at doses used in the study, did not decrease ISOMAC or augment ketamine's effects on ISOMAC.  相似文献
