Myrosinase is a cytosolic plant enzyme present in daikon ( Raphanus sativus, Japanese white radish) roots that hydrolyzes 4-methylthio-3-butenyl glucosinolate (MTBGLS) into the natural pungent agent 4-methylthio-3-butenyl isothiocyanate (MTBITC), which possesses antimicrobial, antimutagenic, and anticarcinogenic properties. The concentration of MTBGLS, myrosinase activity, and production of MTBITC in seven daikon varieties (one conventional and six heirlooms) were determined to rank the activity of the glucosinolate-myrosinase system and identify critical factors influencing the production of MTBITC. The six heirloom varieties produced 2.0-11.5 times higher levels of MTBITC as compared to the conventional variety, Aokubi, which is consumed by the present Japanese population. The myrosinase was located exclusively in the outer epidermal layer in Aokubi, and MTBGLS was widely distributed throughout the root tissue. Although the skin is a potentially rich source of myrosinase in Aokubi, the skin is usually peeled off in the current practice of preparing daikon for cooking. New practices are therefore proposed for the preparation of daikon tubers that eliminate the peeling of the skin to avoid removing the enzyme needed to convert MTBGLS to the health-beneficial MTBITC. It is also concluded that the consumption of heirloom daikon varieties in addition to changes in food preparation will optimize the health benefits of daikon.  相似文献

Rice-fish culture, which means the simultaneous culture of rice and fish, is one of the best options to increase food production from limited land and is practiced in many countries in the world. Although many researchers and farmers believe that the rice yield is increased by fish farming in paddy fields, this hypothesis has never been fully tested. Here, we report ecological processes leading to higher rice yields in the rice-fish culture using crucian carp (Carassius complex), which have adapted to the paddy field ecosystem in Japan. We compare the rice-fish and rice-only plots in the experimental paddy field for biota, water quality, and rice yield. Coverage of duckweed and densities of zooplankton and benthic invertebrates in the rice-fish plots were lower than those in the rice-only plots, indicating that fish utilized them as food. NO3–N concentration in the rice-fish plots was higher than that in the rice-only plots, indicating that the increase in NO3–N concentration results from excretion of unutilized food nutrients by the fish. Consequently, rice yield in the rice-fish plots was 20% higher than that in the rice-only plots. The fertilizing effect of the fish excrement probably increased rice yield.  相似文献

Abstract – Social and foraging modes in fish often vary between individuals with different body sizes and between populations under different ecological conditions. We studied social and foraging behaviour of algae‐grazing fish Plecoglossus altivelis ryukyuensis (Ryukyu‐ayu) inhabiting Japanese subtropical island streams. Ryukyu‐ayu exhibited four behavioural modes: territorial, schooling, solitary and floating. Their body sizes differed among these modes. Territorial fish predominantly foraged on benthic algae, whereas schooling and solitary individuals frequently consumed drifting materials as well. Schooling fish were smaller than territorial fish, but, unlike some other algae‐grazing fish species, did not use schooling to gain access to food within territories. Territorial fish attacked smaller conspecifics but exhibited lateral display towards larger fish and schooling fish while occasionally attacking grazing gobies. Larger fish maintained larger feeding territories and occupied territories for longer periods than smaller fish did. This suggests that, in Ryukyu‐ayu, intra‐ and interspecific food competitions and relative body size can influence diverse behavioural modes and duration of territory occupation. We also found that Ryukyu‐ayu foraged more often and had larger feeding territories than ayu P. a. altivelis inhabiting temperate streams. We conclude that foraging strategies of Ryukyu‐ayu may have adapted to subtropical island streams, where algal productivity is much lower than that in temperate regions.  相似文献

Use of the tibial mechanical joint orientation angles is now the standard of care for evaluating tibial deformities, although they have not been used to evaluate dogs with cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) rupture. The objective of this study was to compare the tibial mechanical joint orientation angles and tibial plateau angle (TPA) between dogs with bilateral CrCL rupture (BR) and unilateral CrCL rupture with (UR-SR) and without subsequent contralateral CrCL rupture (UR-w/o-SR) as risk factors for subsequent contralateral CrCL rupture. Twenty dogs (21.7%) were classified as BR, 38 (41.3%) were classified as UR-SR, and 34 (37.0%) were classified as UR-w/o-SR. The tibial mechanical joint orientation angles and TPA, in the range studied (< 35°), were not statistically different for dogs with BR, UR-SR, and UR-w/o-SR, and were not significant risk factors for subsequent contralateral CrCL rupture.  相似文献

This study identified risk factors for complication following tibial tuberosity transposition by retrospective examination of cases that used various surgical techniques. Records and radiographs of 113 dogs with 137 stifles undergoing tibial tuberosity transposition for medial patellar luxation were reviewed. Patient-specific factors, surgical factors, and complication information were recorded. Owners were contacted as necessary to attain a minimum of 30 days follow-up. Of 137 stifles, 59 (43%) had complications, with 24 (18%) identified as major complications. Factors significantly associated with reduced risk of complication included increased age [odds ratio (OR) 0.8] and concurrent cranial cruciate ligament rupture (OR 0.3). Factors significantly associated with increased risk of complication included large breed compared to toy breed (OR 5.5), increased weight (OR 1.3), and use of a screw for tibial tuberosity fixation (OR infinity). While significant, these associations do not imply causality and prospective study is necessary to determine the ideal fixation method for individual patients.  相似文献

Carbon fibers have excellent physicochemical and electrical properties. Vapor-grown carbon fibers are a type of carbon fibers that have a multi-walled carbon tube structure with a high aspect ratio. The representative vapor-grown carbon fiber, VGCFTM-H, is extremely strong and stable and has superior thermal and electrical conductivity. Because some high-aspect-ratio multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been reported to have toxic and carcinogenic effects in the lungs of rodents, we performed a 13-week lung toxicity study using VGCFTM-H in comparison with one of MWCNTs, MWNT-7, in rats. Male and female F344 rats were intratracheally administered VGCFTM-H at doses of 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 mg/kg bw or MWNT-7 at doses of 0.4 and 0.8 mg/kg bw once a week for 8 weeks and then up to week 13 without treatment. The lung burden was equivalent in the VGCFTM-H and MWNT-7 groups; however, the lung weight had increased and the inflammatory and biochemical parameters in the broncho-alveolar lavage fluid and histopathological parameters, including inflammatory cell infiltration, alveolar type II cells proliferation, alveolar fibrosis, pleural fibrosis, lung mesothelium proliferation, and diaphragm fibrosis, were milder in the VGCFTM-H group than in the MWNT-7 group. In addition, the proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA)-positive index in the visceral and pleural mesothelium was significantly higher in the MWNT-7 group than in the controls, but not in the VGCFTM-H group. Thus, the results of this study indicate that the lung and pleural toxicities of VGCFTM-H were less than those of MWNT-7.  相似文献

Efforts to find the magnetic monopole in real space have been made in cosmic rays and in particle accelerators, but there has not yet been any firm evidence for its existence because of its very heavy mass, approximately 10(16) giga-electron volts. We show that the magnetic monopole can appear in the crystal momentum space of solids in the accessible low-energy region (approximately 0.1 to 1 electron volts) in the context of the anomalous Hall effect. We report experimental results together with first-principles calculations on the ferromagnetic crystal SrRuO3 that provide evidence for the magnetic monopole in the crystal momentum space.  相似文献
