This study investigated otolith shape, elemental chemistry of otolith cores (first 1-3 months of life), and stable isotope ratios (δ18O and δ13C) of whole otoliths as indicators of stock structure among three important southern Australian blue grenadier Macruronus novaezelandiae fishery regions; west Tasmania - WTAS, east Bass Strait - EBS, and Great Australian Bight - GAB. Comparisons were confined to two dominant cohorts of age 4+ and 13+ years, spawned in winter 2002 and 1993 respectively. Otolith shape varied significantly between the WTAS and GAB regions for the age 4+ cohort only. Cu:Ca of otolith cores was significantly higher for both cohorts from WTAS than EBS and GAB, and Ba:Ca of otolith cores higher for WTAS and EBS than the GAB region. Stable isotopic signatures showed greater variation among regions for the age 13+ cohort. In particular, otoliths of age 13+ fish from WTAS displayed significantly higher δ18O (indicative of lower temperature history) than age 4+ fish from all regions, and the same age fish from the GAB and EBS regions. δ18O of blue grenadier otoliths accurately predicted water temperature at their main capture depths of 400-600 m. Chemistry of otolith cores combined with whole otolith isotope ratios discriminated GAB and EBS samples from those collected on the known WTAS spawning ground with moderate to high (64-86%) accuracy. The results provide support for the hypotheses that the GAB fishery is based on a separate stock for management purposes, and that the EBS fishery is likely replenished both from local spawning and the major WTAS spawning region. 相似文献
The growth of niche markets in rural industries has been one response to the restructuring of established agricultural industries
in developed countries. In some cases entry into niche markets is part of a diversification of activities from other areas
of farm-based production or services. In other cases, operators have sought to diversify from niche market production into
other areas, such as on-site selling and agritourism. This paper outlines the findings of an exploratory qualitative study
of the factors that olive farmers in Western Australia take into account when considering diversification, with a special
focus on diversification into servicing visitors in the form of on-site selling and agritourism. Face-to-face and telephone
interviews were conducted among 23 small olive growing operations located in the main olive growing region of Western Australia.
Decision-making is shown to involve an assessment of risk, which is shaped by their appraisal of economic conditions, market
opportunities, access to resources (including labor), and lifestyle factors. The argument is made that a fuller understanding
of diversification is gained by studying both those who seek to diversify and those who do not, in contrast to most previous
research that has only focussed on those who diversify. Also argued is that diversification is best seen as a continuum of
adjustment strategies, which is guided by a combination of economic need, risk assessment (based largely on resource access),
market potential, and lifestyle factors. 相似文献
Triticale (× Triticosecale Whittmack) and Triticum timopheevii have undergone little selection relative to other grains for quality characters, including starch amylose content. Using starch swelling power (SSP) in water and spectrophotometric analysis of the iodine binding ratio, 247 lines of triticale and 20 lines of T. timopheevii were screened for amylose content. Following this, the expression of the starch-forming protein granule-bound starch synthase (GBSS) in triticale was investigated by SDS-PAGE in the eight highest and eight lowest SSP lines. A strong correlation (R2 = 0.8174) was found between iodine binding and SSP. The SSP of T. timopheevii lines ranged from 13.7 to 16.7, indicating an approximate range of amylose content from 28.1 to 33.8%: a small range within typical results from commercial wheat cultivars. The SSP of triticale ranged from 12.5 to 23.6 suggesting amylose content ranged from 12.8 to 35.1%: a much wider range reflecting the contribution of both the wheat and rye genomes. It appeared that expression of GBSS-4A was down-regulated in low amylose lines. Therefore there is significant potential to select for amylose content in triticale to increase quality in both the animal and human feed markets. 相似文献
A rapid, straightforward starch dissolution method was developed to facilitate analysis of starch by size-exclusion chromatrography (SEC). Soft wheat starch was dispersed in 6 M urea and 1 M KOH and subjected to heating for 35, 45, or 60 s in a microwave oven as a potential means of starch dissolution. An increase in microwave heating time enhanced starch solubility but resulted in a steady decrease in amylopectin peak area and a consequent, artifactual increase in the amylose peak area due to molecular degradation. However, microwave heating for 35 s afforded a reasonable separation of starch fractions by SEC while minimizing molecular degradation of starch in comparison to a traditional starch dissolution procedure. This procedure provides a fast (<30 min), simple, and reproducible starch dissolution method for preparation of starches for SEC analysis and represents the first successful report of direct dissolution of granular starch via microwave heating. 相似文献
For many years, the San Joaquin River (SJR) has had low dissolved oxygen conditions intermittently during the late summer and early fall. The low dissolved oxygen conditions are impacting critical fish habitat and the SJR is being regulated under a state of California remediation plan that includes the development of a total maximum daily load (TMDL) allocation for oxygen demanding substances. In support of the development of a scientific TMDL allocation, studies are being conducted to characterize water quality in the many tributaries of the SJR. This study identified the sources of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in two western tributaries of the SJR, Mud Slough and Salt Slough, and measured the loads of BOD, algae, and ammonia entering the SJR from wetland and agricultural sources.
Mud and Salt Sloughs drain the Grassland Watershed. The watershed contains seasonal wetlands, irrigated farmland, and other agricultural lands. This drainage is under close regulatory scrutiny, because it produces a majority of the selenium and boron entering the SJR. In this study, wetland and irrigated agricultural drainage were sampled separately and a comparison was made to determine differences in water quality. In addition, water entering the study area was compared to water exiting the study area to determine the effect of water use in the region on water quality.
This study demonstrated that BOD loads from the Grassland Watershed to the SJR were proportional to flow during June–October, the most critical time for dissolved oxygen deficits in the lower SJR. This indicates that Mud and Salt Sloughs are not producing more BOD than other tributaries in the region that are not under close regulatory scrutiny. The BOD concentration of wetland drainage is higher than that of agricultural drainage, but the higher agricultural drainage flows result in a higher mass loading of BOD. Wetland flooding and irrigation of crops both had a negative impact on water quality. Algal growth was identified as the major source of BOD in agricultural drainage and locations where BOD control could potentially be implemented were identified. 相似文献
Heat stress (HS) exacerbates the body weight loss of lactating sows and reduces litter weight gain. Selenium (Se), vitamin E (VE), chromium (Cr) and betaine have been shown to ameliorate symptoms of HS, and yeast nucleotides and mannan oligosaccharides have been reported to improve lactational performance and immune response in pigs. Therefore, a combination of these nutrients may improve lactational performance of sows in summer. The effects of two nutritionally enhanced diets on lactational performance of sows in summer were investigated in two experiments. In experiment 1, we compared the effects of a nutritionally fortified diet (0.4 ppm Se, 95 IU/kg VE, 0.4 ppm Cr and 0.2% betaine; named as SVCB diet) with the NRC 2012 standard diet (0.15 ppm Se, 44 IU/kg VE) on lactational performance of sows in summer. Results showed that the SVCB diet reduced body weight loss (P = 0.039) and tended to reduce backfat loss (P = 0.075) of sows without affecting feed intake, while litter weight gain was not influenced. In experiment 2, we further enhanced the nutrients in the SVCB diet (0.8 ppm Se, 1% yeast nucleotides, and 0.1% mannan oligosaccharides; named as SNM diet). Results showed that the SNM diet did not improve feed intake of sows, farrowing performance, or litter weight gain compared with the SVCB diet, but increased body weight loss of the third parity sows (P = 0.037). Overall, a combined supplementation of Se, VE, Cr, and betaine above the NRC recommended levels can reduce mobilisation of body reserve of lactating sows in summer. 相似文献
Many plant–animal interactions can be challenging to directly observe, due to species being small, cryptic and/or nocturnal. Previous research on seed predation and dispersal by rodents in the Fynbos Biome of South Africa has relied on indirect evidence, as methods for directly monitoring rodent–seed interactions were not available. The aims of the study were to determine which resident small mammals scatter-hoard nuts and the geographic, seasonal and taxonomic extent of scatter-hoarding in the Fynbos Biome. We used camera traps focused on seed stations at eight sites in the Fynbos Biome to determine the responses of small mammals to tagged nut-like fruits (nuts) of seven endemic plant species belonging to the Proteaceae (n = 3), Rosaceae (n = 2), Restionaceae (n = 1) and Cupressaceae (n = 1), as well as commercial sunflower seeds. We found Acomys subspinosus and Gerbilliscus paeba scatter-hoarded nuts, which they typically carried and buried individually. Rhabdomys pumilio and Micaelamys namaquensis only consumed nuts. Leucadendron pubescens and L. loranthifolium are added to the list of known plant species that are scatter-hoarded by rodents. Nuts of Cliffortia cuneata and C. phillipsii, and the critically endangered Widdringtonia cedarbergensis, were consumed but not dispersed by small mammals, whereas nuts of Ceratocaryum argenteum were neither consumed nor scatter-hoarded by rodents (within its native range). Gerbilliscus paeba and A. subspinosus scatter-hoarded nuts aseasonally, outside of seed-fall periods. Scatter-hoarding was widespread throughout the Fynbos Biome, although it was highly localised across and within sampled sites. The absence of scatter-hoarding rodents at sites with rodent-dispersed plants remains an important aspect for future investigation. 相似文献
