Seven (three male and four female) 4-7-yr old captive servals (Felis serval) weighing 13.7 +/- 2.3 kg were used to evaluate the cardiopulmonary and anesthetic effects of combined intramuscular injections of medetomidine (47.4 +/- 10.3 microg/kg), ketamine (1.0 +/- 0.2 mg/kg), and butorphanol (0.2 +/- 0.03 mg/kg). Inductions were smooth and rapid (11.7 +/- 4.3 min) and resulted in good muscle relaxation. Significant decreases in heart rate (85 +/- 12 beats/min) at 10 min after injection and respiratory rate (27 +/- 10 breaths/min) at 5 min after injection continued throughout the immobilization period. Rectal temperature and arterial blood pressure did not change significantly. The PaO2 decreased significantly, and PaCO2 increased significantly during immobilization but remained within clinically acceptable limits. Hypoxemia (PaO2 < 60 mm Hg) was not noted, and arterial blood oxygen saturation (SaO2) was greater than 90% at all times. Relative arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) values, indicated by pulse oximetry, were lower than SaO2 values. All animals could be safely handled while sedated. Administration of atipamezole (236.8 +/- 51.2 microg/kg half i.v. and half s.c.), an alpha2 antagonist, resulted in rapid (4.1 +/- 3 min to standing) and smooth recoveries.  相似文献

Non‐pregnant, non‐lactating ewes grazed adjacent monocultures of white clover and perennial ryegrass with three sward surface height (SSH) combinations [6 cm white clover: 6 cm perennial ryegrass (c6g6), 3 cm white clover: 6 cm perennial ryegrass (c3g6), 3 cm white clover: 9 cm perennial ryegrass (c3g9)] at two stocking densities (21·3 or 29·8 ewes ha–1). Immediately prior to the experiment, all ewes grazed a c6g6 sward. Grazing time on each plant species was recorded during daylight over two 48 h‐test periods. Subsequently, herbage intake rates for each species at each SSH were measured allowing intakes of each species to be calculated. For the first 24 h of both test periods (D1), ewes on treatment c3g6 spent less time grazing white clover than those on treatment c6g6 (228 vs. 362 min) and more time grazing perennial ryegrass (360 vs. 182 min). Total grazing time on treatment c3g6 was more than on treatment c6g6 (587 vs. 544 min) but the difference was not significant. Perennial ryegrass intake was higher (895 vs. 452 g), and white clover intake (814 vs. 1687 g), total intake (1719 vs. 2140 g) and proportion of white clover in the diet (0·460 vs. 0·794) were lower for treatment c3g6 than treatment c6g6. There were no significant differences in total grazing time, grazing time on either species, proportion of grazing time on white clover or proportion of white clover in the diet between treatment c3g6 and treatment c3g9. However, the higher intake rate of perennial ryegrass in treatment c3g9 led to higher perennial ryegrass and total intakes. For the second 24 h of both test periods (D2), ewes on treatment c3g6 again spent more time grazing perennial ryegrass than on treatment c6g6 (270 vs. 161 min) but time spent grazing white clover was similar (318 vs. 308 min). Total grazing time was significantly higher on treatment c3g6 than on treatment c6g6 (588 vs. 469 min) but proportion of grazing time on white clover was similar (0·554 vs. 0·668). Perennial ryegrass intake was significantly higher for treatment c3g6 than for treatment c6g6 (672 vs. 402 g) while white clover intake was significantly lower (1140 vs. 1435 g) but total intake was similar (1812 vs. 1836 g). The proportion of white clover in the diet was significantly lower for treatment c3g6 (0.628 vs. 0.785) than for treatment c6g6. The only significant differences between treatments c3g6 and c3g9 were in perennial ryegrass intake (672 vs. 906 g) and in total intake (1812 vs. 2287 g). Intake of perennial ryegrass on treatment c3g9 was also significantly greater than on treatment c6g6 (906 vs. 402 g) and total intake was higher (2287 vs. 1836 g). At the higher stocking density, time spent grazing perennial ryegrass and perennial ryegrass intake were significantly lower on D1 and D2 while total grazing time was also significantly lower and proportion of time grazing white clover and proportion of white clover in the diet were significantly higher at the higher stocking rate on D2. The results indicate that behaviour changed over the 48 h observation period for treatments c3g6 and c3g9 but behaviour remained relatively constant for animals on treatment c6g6. Ewes traded off dietary preference against total intake by altering grazing times on perennial ryegrass and white clover to achieve maximum net benefit.  相似文献

Twenty-one dogs with atopy were entered into a blinded, placebo-controlled study lasting eight weeks. They were randomly divided into three groups and were all given supplementary oils orally once daily. The dogs in groups A and B were given borage seed oil and fish oil in combination (Viacutan; Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica) to provide 176 mg/kg or 88 mg/kg borage seed oil respectively. The dogs in group C were given 204 mg/kg olive oil as a placebo. They were all re-examined after four and eight weeks and scored for pruritus, erythema, oedema, alopecia and self-excoriation. After eight weeks the scores for erythema and self-excoriation, and the total score for the dogs in group A, and the total score for the dogs in group B were significantly reduced (P < 0.05). The dogs in group C showed no significant improvement.  相似文献

The use of the penicillins in veterinary dermatology is discussed. An outline is provided of the main penicillins used in the veterinary field. These include benzyl penicillin, penicillin V, ampicillin, amoxycillin, co-amoxiclav and oxacillin. An increase in β-lactamase production among strains of Staphylococcus intermedius , the principal canine pathogen in pyoderma, has been seen in recent years. Thus only those penicillins with resistance to β-lactamase (co-amoxiclav or isoxazolyl penicillins) are likely to be of value in treating canine pyoderma. However, feline, porcine and equine staphylococcal dermatoses, and other veterinary dermatoses such as the actinomycoses, dermatophilosis and erysipelothrix, usually respond well to most penicillins, whether or not they resist β-lactamase.  相似文献

Summary Plants of early potato cultivars were sampled at successive harvests during tuber development and individual tubers were analysed for α-solanine and α-chaconine using high-performance liquid chromatography. Mean tuber total glycoalkaloid concentration (α-solanine plus α-chaconine) per plant decreased with time and statistically significant differences between cultivars were observed in the patterns of decline during tuber growth. The mean tuber ratio of α-chaconine to α-solanine increased during tuber development and was also affected by genotype. Total glycoalkaloid concentration for individual tubers of marketable sizes (up to 50 g fresh weight) exceeded the safety limit of 20 mg per 100 g fresh weight for cultivars Home Guard and British Queen but not for Rocket. These differences were attributable to differences in both rates and patterns of glycoalkaloid accumulation during tuber development, although in all cultivars results were consistent with glycoalkaloid accumulation occurring in the expanding peripheral cell layers of tubers for a considerable period after tuber initiation.  相似文献

We studied the effects of a biochar made from fast pyrolysis of switchgrass on four soil enzymes (β-glucosidase, β-N-acetylglucosaminidase, lipase, and leucine aminopeptidase) to determine if biochar would consistently modify soil biological activities. Thus, we conducted a series of enzyme assays on biochar-amended soils. Inconsistent results from enzyme assays of char-amended soils suggested that biochar had variable effects on soil enzyme activities, thus we conducted a second experiment to determine if biochar reacts predictably with either enzyme or substrate in in vitro reactions. Both colorimetric and fluorescent assays were used for β-glucosidase and β-N-acetylglucosaminidase. Seven days after biochar was added to microcosms of 3 different soils, fluorescence-based assays revealed some increased enzyme activities (up to 7-fold for one measure of β-glucosidase in a shrub-steppe soil) and some decreased activities (one-fifth of the unamended control for lipase measured in the same shrub-steppe soil), compared to non-amended soil. In an effort understand the varied effects, purified enzymes or substrates were briefly exposed to biochar and then assayed. In contrast to the soil assays, except for β-N-acetylglucosaminidase, the exposure of substrate to biochar reduced the apparent activity of the enzymes, suggesting that sorption reactions between substrate and biochar impeded enzyme function. Our findings indicate that fluorometric assays are more robust to, or account for, this sorption better than the colorimetric assays used herein. The activity of purified β-N-acetylglucosaminidase increased 50-75% following biochar exposure, suggesting a chemical enhancement of enzyme function. In some cases, biochar stimulates soil enzyme activities, to a much greater degree than soil assays would indicate, given that substrate reactivity can be impeded by biochar exposure. We conclude that the effects of biochar on enzyme activities in soils are highly variable; these effects are likely associated with reactions between biochar and the target substrate.  相似文献

  • 1. Under the EC Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC), several rivers in the UK have been designated Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) because they support important populations of fish species. Several factors need to be considered when establishing survey protocols to assess the conservation status of fish species in these rivers.
  • 2. It is important to understand the biology and habitat requirements of fish species and to design appropriate monitoring surveys that adequately assess the status of the fish populations. This information can, in turn, provide the basis for establishing sustainable conservation targets for specific stocks, a process known as condition assessment.
  • 3. Favourable condition of fish species in SAC rivers is assessed using three criteria. The first relates to density of fish in various life stages against pre‐set targets, assuming that an appropriate number of sites is surveyed to account for natural spatial and temporal variations in fish populations. The second is evaluation of the demographic structure to demonstrate continued recruitment success. Third, by mapping the distribution of the target species in individual rivers and where favourable condition is only achieved where there has been no reduction in the distribution range river between surveys.
  • 4. The framework described was developed from limited survey data. As more monitoring and assessment data become available, the threshold criteria for favourable condition for each species should be improved, and uncertainty in the procedures reduced.

  • 1. More extensive physical management of rivers in response to increasing flood risk, and action to improve the ecological quality of rivers represent two major, and potentially conflicting, challenges.
  • 2. Improved understanding of the interactions between flood defence works and habitat structure must be achieved in order to satisfy both of these demands in the context of flood risk management and habitat improvement.
  • 3. This paper examines the ‘extensive’ and ‘intensive’ use of data derived from a standardized method of assessing habitat character to explore the effects of flood risk maintenance works on river habitat quality.
  • 4. Analysis of the UK River Habitat Survey (RHS) data set reveals some broad trends towards reduced habitat heterogeneity associated with recent flood defence works such as dredging and weed‐cutting.
  • 5. These observations correspond with published localized experimental work and suggest that the RHS database can be a useful resource for identifying relationships at relatively broad scales.
  • 6. Applying the RHS methodology at finer spatial scales for sites experiencing continuing maintenance reveals contrasting results and highlights some key methodological issues; these include the availability and selection of high quality benchmark conditions, the legacy of past management, lag times associated with maintenance and recovery, and recording of marginal habitat features.
  • 7. Small modifications to the RHS method could enable calculation of more detailed habitat indices while maintaining comparability with the national dataset.
  • 8. If the issues identified in this paper can be addressed or accounted for, RHS could be an important tool for assessing the relationship between flood defence management and new statutory obligations for ecological improvement.
