Methanolic (VPME) and chloroformic (VPCL) extracts, obtained from the aerial parts of Vernonia polyanthes, were investigated for its antiulcerogenic properties. Administration of VPME (250 mg/kg) and VPCL (50 mg/kg) significantly inhibited the gastric mucosa damage (64% and 90%, respectively) caused by absolute ethanol (p.o.). Otherwise, in NSAID-induced gastric damage, their gastroprotective effects have decreased. Since the VPCL extract resulted to be more effective than the VPME we focused our efforts over VPCL action mechanism of action.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted at Kaibo in southern Burkina Faso on an Eutric Cambisol during the 2000 rainy season to assess the interaction of organic amendment quality and soil fauna, affecting soil organic carbon and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) performance. Plots were treated with the pesticides Dursban and Endosulfan to exclude soil fauna or left untreated. Sub-treatments consisted of surface-placed maize straw (C/N ratio = 58), Andropogon straw (C/N ratio = 153), cattle dung (C/N ratio = 40), sheep dung (C/N ratio = 17) or compost (C/N ratio = 10) and the control. Organic amendments were applied at a dose equivalent to the application of 40 kg N ha−1. The presence of soil fauna increased soil total carbon by 32% and grain yield production by 50%. The interaction between high C/N ratio organic amendment, Andropogon straw (SA), and soil fauna reduced soil carbon build-up. We suggest that this is due to a priming effect of SA on soil organic matter in the presence of soil fauna. We also suggest that the interaction between soil fauna and easily decomposable organic amendment led to the smallest decrease in soil carbon build-up. It is concluded that in semi-arid West Africa, in the presence of soil fauna, soil carbon build-up is more affected by the quality of organic amendments than the quantity of carbon inputs. Sorghum grain yield production was significantly reduced in the absence of soil fauna. High C/N ratio organic amendment interacted negatively with soil fauna in its effects on crop performance. We propose that the effect of soil fauna on soil carbon build-up and crop performance can be optimised by using high quality organic matter or supplementing low-quality organic matter with inorganic nitrogen in semi-arid West Africa.  相似文献

The diversity of Oniscidea across a 1000-m altitudinal gradient comprising three distinct environments—the coastal plain, the highland slopes, and the highlands—was described and analysed. We employed 1 h-long exploratory manual sampling at 41 sites. Fourteen species were identified, of 818 individuals collected. Sampling-effort curves stabilised for all three environments; analytical estimates of species richness did not exceed the observed value. Abundance did not vary significantly among environments, and local species richness differed only marginally. However, the Shannon diversity index for local sites indicated highland slopes to be significantly more diverse than the coastal region; the same was true for bootstrap estimates at the regional level. Two species appeared in all three environments, comprising 72.7% of the abundance. The coastal region and highlands had one exclusive species each, and the highland slopes had three. The first two environments are more similar to each other than to the slopes, although they are not contiguous. The altitudinal gradient of diversity was hump-shaped, because the highland slopes were most diverse. The reasons for this pattern are not biogeographical; that is, the highland slopes are not a contact zone between the highlands and the coast. A complete explanation depends upon better understanding of the effect of soil type and terrain slope on the diversity of terrestrial isopods.  相似文献

Group A rotavirus (RV-A) with short electropherotype was identified by ss-PAGE in a neonatal diarrhea outbreak at a Brazilian pig farm where the sows were regularly vaccinated with a commercial vaccine containing OSU (G5P[7]) and Gottfried (G4P[6]) porcine RV-A (PoRV-A) strains. The ss-PAGE positive stool samples (n=20) were characterized as P[6] genotype by multiplex-nested-RT-PCR assay. The nucleotide analysis of the VP4 gene (VP8*) state that the viruses clustered in P[6] lineages that are also shared by RV-A strains identified in human hosts. Nucleotide analysis of the VP7 gene identified different lineages in G4 including a new lineage tentatively designated IX. The immunological pressure induced by commercial vaccine with a rotavirus containing a G4P[6] genotype of porcine origin (Gottfried strain) might have allowed the selection of PoRV-A strains with characteristics found in RV-A strains isolated of human hosts, such as P[6]-Ie and If, and promoted the selection or emergence of RV-A strains with a new lineage of the G4 genotype. The characterization of PoRV-A strains with unusual genotypes described in this study highlight the importance of surveys on the relationship between human and animal rotavirus strains.  相似文献

Moderate consumption of red wine reduces the risk of heart disease and extends lifespan, but the relative contribution of wine polyphenols to these effects is unclear. In this work, the capacity of resveratrol and catechin to protect the eukaryotic microorganism Saccharomyces cerevisiae against oxidative stress caused by different agents, hydrogen peroxide, carbon tetrachloride, and cadmium, was evaluated. Under all stress conditions, both polyphenols increased tolerance, although their protection was more evident under peroxide exposure. By using mutant strains deficient in specific antioxidant defense systems (superoxide dismutases, catalase, or glutathione), it was observed that increased H2O2 tolerance produced by both polyphenols was associated with catalase, as well as the rise in survival rates caused by resveratrol under CCl4. The acquisition of tolerance was correlated with a reduction in lipid peroxidation, indicating that the antioxidant property of resveratrol and catechin involves protection against membrane oxidation.  相似文献
