A survey of growers in the Treasure Valley of western Idaho/eastern Oregon indicated that Russet Burbank potato tends to produce better quality tubers under sprinkler irrigation than with furrow irrigation. Irrigation plot studies were carried out over 3 years on 2 sites to determine if these differences were a result of commonly-used management practices or inherent in the irrigation method. With good water management, irrigation method did not affect yields, but sprinkler irrigation produced tubers with slightly better visual quality and much lower incidence of sugar ends. The reasons for better quality with sprinkler-irrigation were projected to include: 1) less water stress since sprinklers can more uniformly apply the small, frequent irrigations that potato requires; 2) better nitrogen management since furrow applications often leach nitrogen from the root zone; and 3) lower soil temperatures due to sprinkler water evaporative cooling. 相似文献

Soft tissue phase scintigrams were acquired from 7 normal horses before and over a 17-day period after palmar digital, abaxial sesamoid, low palmar and high palmar nerve blocks. Bone phase scintigrams were acquired from 4 additional horses prior to performing similar regional anesthesia and over a 14-day period postanesthesia. Images were evaluated subjectively and quantitatively for increased activity in nerve block regions. On soft tissue phase scintigrams, palmar digital and abaxial sesamoid blocks resulted in increases in activity which were relatively mild, of short duration, and subjectively had little or no effect on image interpretation. Low palmar and high palmar blocks resulted in obvious focal accumulation of activity during the soft tissue phase. Such increases in activity were usually greatest at 1 day postanesthesia and persisted up to 17 days postanesthesia. On bone phase scintigrams, abnormal accumulation of activity was not evident. 相似文献

SummaryCut scapes of the four gerbera cvs Campitano, Dino, Sangria and Testarossa were preharvest sprayed and postharvest dipped or injected with 0 (control), 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5% CaCl2. Vase life and bending incidence were determined during storage at 258C. Scape calcium content was determined at the end of vase life. Significant extension of vase life and decrease in bending incidence was observed in blooms of `Campitano', `Dino' and `Testarossa' gerberas injected with 1.0% CaCl2, followed by dipping in 1.0% CaCl2 postharvest compared with the control. `Sangria' gerbera scapes preharvest sprayed with 1.0–1.5% CaCl2 had the longest flower longevity and the lowest bending incidence. Scape calcium concentration of `Campitano', `Sangria' and `Testarossa' increased by 250, 130 and 370%, respectively, compared with the control; calcium treatments resulted in a 3–4 d increase in vase life and a 3-5 d delay in bending incidence relative to the control; treatments with 1.5% CaCl2 considerably increased scape calcium content but did not contribute any additional increase in the vase life of the flowers. Although postharvest dipping with 1.0% CaCl2 had moderate results compared with the other treatments it can be considered as a promising postharvest treatment to extend vase life of cut gerberas due to the ease of application. 相似文献

The prevalence of Cryptosporidium, Giardia and Eimeria, in healthy, asymptomatic, post-weaned and mature cattle was investigated on three Maryland farms. One farm, a dairy research facility, had 150 multiparous Holstein milking cows; 24 were examined and Cryptosporidium andersoni was detected in three (12.5%) but neither Giardia nor Eimeria was detected. The second farm, a commercial dairy, had 57 multiparous Holstein milking cows and an equal number of heifers. Of 19 cows examined, C. parvum, Giardia duodenalis, and Eimeria bovis and/or E. ellipsoidalis were detected in two (10.5%), two (10.5%) and one (5.26%) cow, respectively. Of 23 heifers examined, C. parvum, Giardia, and E. bovis and E. ellipsoidalis, was detected in two (8.7%), four (17.4%), and five (21.7%), heifers, respectively. The third farm, a beef cattle breeding and genetics research facility, had 180 7- to 9-month old purebred black Angus. Of 118 examined for C. parvum and Giardia, 34 (28.8%) and 44 (37.3%) were positive, respectively, of 97 examined for E. bovis and/or E. ellipsoidalis 32 (33.0%) were positive. These findings, based on a method with a minimum detection level of 100 oocysts of C. parvum/g of feces, which underestimates the number of infected cattle, clearly demonstrate the presence of low level, asymptomatic infections in post-weaned and adult cattle in the United States and indicate the potential role of such cattle as reservoirs of infectious parasites. 相似文献

A dog was presented for the en bloc resection of a previously irradiated mandibular ossifying epulis. A central hemimandibulectomy was performed, and the mandibular defect was stabilized by the use of a free cortical ulnar autograft and rigid internal fixation. The dog had normal mastication and left forelimb function two weeks after surgery. Radiographic evaluation of the surgical site at three and 10 months after surgery showed normal bony healing. 相似文献

Feces and duodenal scrapings were collected from 22 coyotes (Canis latrans) killed in managed hunts in northeastern Pennsylvania. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods were used to detect Giardia and Cryptosporidium spp. PCR-amplified fragments of Giardia and Cryptosporidium spp. SSU-rRNA genes were subjected to DNA sequence analysis for species/genotype determination. Seven coyotes (32%) were positive for G. duodenalis: three assemblage C, three assemblage D, and one assemblage B. Six coyotes (27%) were positive for Cryptosporidium spp. One isolate shared 99.7% homology with C. muris, whereas five others (23%) shared 100% homology with C. canis, coyote genotype. This is the first report on multiple genotypes of Giardia spp. in coyotes and on the prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. genotypes in coyotes. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To identify and characterize motilin receptors in equine duodenum, jejunum, cecum, and large colon and to determine whether erythromycin lactobionate competes with porcine motilin for binding to these receptors. SAMPLE POPULATION: Specimens of various segments of the intestinal tracts of 4 adult horses euthanatized for reasons unrelated to gastrointestinal tract disease. PROCEDURE: Cellular membranes were prepared from smooth muscle tissues of the duodenum, jejunum, pelvic flexure, and cecum. Affinity and distribution of motilin binding on membrane preparations were determined by use of 125I-labeled synthetic porcine motilin. Displacement studies were used to investigate competition between 125I-labeled synthetic porcine motilin and erythromycin lactobionate for binding to motilin receptors in various segments of bowel. RESULTS: Affinity of 125I-labeled synthetic porcine motilin for the equine motilin receptor was estimated to be 6.1nM. A significantly higher number of motilin receptors was found in the duodenum than in the pelvic flexure and cecum. The jejunum had a significantly higher number of motilin receptors than the cecum. Erythromycin lactobionate displacement of 125I-labeled porcine motilin from the equine motilin receptor did not differ significantly among various segments of bowel. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Motilin receptors were found in the duodenum, jejunum, pelvic flexure, and cecum of horses. The highest number of motilin receptors was in the duodenum, and it decreased in more distal segments of bowel. Erythromycin lactobionate competed with motilin binding in the equine gastrointestinal tract. This suggests that 1 of the prokinetic actions of erythromycin in horses is likely to be secondary to binding on motilin receptors. 相似文献

To determine whether pituitary concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) or hypothalamic content of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) change before puberty, 40 prepubertal gilts averaging 7 mo of age were slaughtered before or on the second, third or fourth day after relocation and boar exposure. Some gilts responded to relocation and boar exposure as indicated by swollen vulvae, turgid uteri and enlarged ovarian follicles at the time of slaughter. Pituitary concentrations of LH and FSH and hypothalamic content of GnRH were similar between gilts that responded to relocation and boar exposure and gilts that did not respond. In addition, boar exposure and relocation had no effect on pituitary concentrations of LH and FSH or on hypothalamic content of GnRH. To determine whether pituitary responsiveness to GnRH changes before puberty, a third experiment was conducted in which 72 gilts were injected with 400 micrograms of GnRH either before or on the second, third or fourth day after relocation and boar exposure. In gilts that subsequently responded (i.e., ovulated) as a result of relocation and boar exposure, pituitary responsiveness to GnRH was reduced as compared with gilts that failed to ovulate after relocation and boar exposure. Peak concentrations of serum LH after GnRH injection were 4.6 +/- 1.3 vs 9.8 +/- .8 ng/ml for responders vs nonresponders. Peak serum FSH after GnRH injection was also lower for responders than for nonresponders (29.5 +/- 4.2 vs 41.2 +/- 2.4 ng/ml).
