The efficiency of one- and two-dimensional NMR experiments in characterizing the content of the constituents of both herbal drugs and herbal drug preparations is demonstrated for kava-kava. These experiments directly detect active constituents represented by kavalactones in both a finely powdered herbal drug and a commercial extract. In addition, NMR spectroscopy can detect all other compounds present in the extract. As previously evidenced, NMR experiments can represent a generally applicable technique for rapid screening and are a complement to the classical analytical techniques such as high-performance thin-layer chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography, capillary gas chromatography, and electrophoresis. These experiments can be considered a very simple and fast analytical method to obtain a fingerprint of the herbal drugs and their preparations, and to quantify the content of the active principles of the extract. 相似文献

Allicin, an active ingredient of garlic, possesses a range of antimicrobial properties. Unfortunately, certain properties of the compound, such as chemical instability and low miscibility with water, have hampered its practical use in the past. Here, we show that it is possible to use a binary system consisting of the plant enzyme alliinase and its substrate alliin to generate allicin, and hence antifungal activity, in situ. During application, the two inactive components generate compounds that inhibit growth and infection-related development of the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe grisea. It is therefore possible to "trigger" biological activity in a controlled, yet effective manner. Apart from circumventing many of the drawbacks of allicin, this binary system has additional important advantages, such as low toxicity of its individual components and selective activation. Importantly, alliinase is also able to use different substrates, therefore paving the way to a range of novel, binary antimicrobial systems with custom-made chemical and biochemical properties. 相似文献

ABSTRACT The use of applied phosphorus (P) and the uptake of nutrients from the soil by plants can be improved when the fertilizer is combined with the application of humic substances (HS). However, these beneficial effects are inconsistent and can depend on the type of soil. This study was performed to evaluate the effects of the application of HS (0, 1.25, and 7.50 mL pot–1), as Humic HF®, and fertilizer-P (10, 50, 100, and 200 mg P dm–3), as triple superphosphate, on root morphological characteristics, dry matter accumulation, nutrient uptake, and tuber yield of potatoes grown in sandy and clayey soils. Only under low P supply in the sandy soil did the supply of HS, at the rate of 1.25 mL pot–1, increase the plant growth, yield of tubers, and uptake of macronutrients by the plants, without affecting the efficiency of the P fertilization. In the clayey soil, which had a higher organic matter content, the application of HS did not affect plant growth, tuber yield or nutrient uptake. In both soils, P fertilization increased plant growth, tuber yield, and nutrient uptake. The combined application of HS and P increased the root length of potatoes in sandy soil. 相似文献

Suspensions of embryonic chick neuronal cells adhered to monolayers of glial cells, but few neurons bound to control monolayers of fibroblastic cells from meninges or skin. Neuronal cell-glial cell adhesion was inhibited by prior incubation of the neurons with Fab' fragments of antibodies to neuronal membranes. In contrast, antibodies to the neural cell adhesion molecule (N-CAM) did not inhibit the binding. These results suggest that a specific adhesive mechanism between neurons and glial cells exists and that it is mediated by CAM's that differ from those so far identified. 相似文献

Atmospheric nitrogen oxides (NOx =NO+ NO2) play a pivotal role in the cycling of reactive nitrogen (ultimately deposited as nitrate) and the oxidative capacity of the atmosphere. Combined measurements of nitrogen and oxygen stable isotope ratios of nitrate collected in the Arctic atmosphere were used to infer the origin and fate of NOx and nitrate on a seasonal basis. In spring, photochemically driven emissions of reactive nitrogen from the snowpack into the atmosphere make local oxidation of NOx by bromine oxide the major contributor to the nitrate budget. The comprehensive isotopic composition of nitrate provides strong constraints on the relative importance of the key atmospheric oxidants in the present atmosphere, with the potential for extension into the past using ice cores. 相似文献

Phosphorus (P) and zinc (Zn) are important determinants of plant productivity, particularly in the tropical grasslands of Brazil. Nutrient deficiency is one of the most important factors limiting plant productivity, decreasing photosynthesis efficiency and plant development. The present study investigates in Brachiaria brizantha (Hochst. ex A. Rich.) Stapf. cv. ‘Marandu’: 1) the gas exchange measurements; 2) the total leaf area development; and 3) the dry matter production due to P and Zn nutrition. Plants of B. brizantha cv. ‘Marandu’ were grown in nutrient solution under five rates of P (0.1, 0.6, 1.1, 1.6, and 2.1 mmol L?1) and five rates of Zn (0.00, 0.75, 1.5, 2.25, and 3.00 μmol L?1), in a fractioned factorial. Plants were harvested two times. Phosphorus supply increased carbon dioxide (CO2) assimilation and stomatal conductance, and decreased intercellular CO2. The interaction P rates x Zn rates were significant for the total leaf area variables and shoot dry matter in the second growth period. An indirect sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) has been used for vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) typing using sets of monovalent and polyvalent rabbit/guinea pig antisera for identification of VSV types New Jersey (VNJ) and Indiana (VIND). The VIND polyvalent antiserum (VIND-P) detects any strain of the 3 subtypes of the VIND type (VIND-1, VIND-2, and VIND-3) with the same strong reactivity. It is also possible to subtype the VIND strains using VIND-P rabbit antiserum as capture antibody and monovalent VIND-1, VIND-2, or VIND-3 guinea pig antisera as detector. The ELISA proposed has about 10 times more sensitivity and provides 10% more positive results than does the complement fixation 50% (CF50) test when epithelial samples are tested. 相似文献

Use of domestic reference values in the flow cytometry analysis is known to improve its accuracy by integrating local variations as gender, race and age. Up to date application of flow cytometry in veterinary medicine has been limited to describe the percentual values just for peripheral lymphocytes subsets of blood. We now report establishment of reference values for a wide range of proportional and absolute numbers of peripheral blood leukocytes, including T cells subsets, B cells, monocytes and eosinophils, applicable to the healthy population of Beagles in Brazil and other regions with similar demographic characteristics. Normal reference values were also established to estimate the gender-related differences. This information will provide clinical aid in the evaluation of immunologic status as well as standard values for experimental animals of dogs from Brazil and other similar regions. 相似文献
