The effects of acid deposition, excess N deposition, and elevated CO2 on forest soils and nutrition in North America are reviewed. While there remains the possibility that acid deposition and excess N deposition are contributing to declines in red spruce, sugar maple, and southern pines, clearcut cause and effects are still not evident. Climate is clearly a major factor in red spruce decline in the northeastern U.S., but air pollution may contribute. There is some evidence that soil solution Al may be approaching deleterious levels in southeastern red spruce forests. Lack of proper management may be a major factor in the sugar maple and southern pine declines, but once again, air pollution as a potential contributor cannot be ignored. Nutrient budget analyses and discoveries of soils base cation depletion in certain sites suggest that base cation status is declining in forests of the southeastern U.S., but thus far, base cation deficiencies are uncommon. Recent research has revealed that there are more cases of N-saturated forests in North America than was previously suspected. These systems are characterized by high rates of soil N mineralization, high atmospheric N inputs, low uptakes, or some combination of these factors. Soil leaching and Al mobilization in such systems is often dominated by nitrate. However, the geographical extent of these types of systems is limited, and the traditional view that most forest ecosystems are N limited remains valid, especially where forest management is intensive. The limited information available on tree response to CO2. suggests N-deficient plants often grow faster with elevated CO2, whereas P-deficient plants often do not. Research is needed to 1) determine if the differences in response between N- and P-deficient plants is common, 2) the responses of plants deficient in other nutrients to elevated CO2, and 3) the interactions of CO2 increase, nutrient deficiencies, climate change.  相似文献

Soil management practices that result in increased soil carbon (C) sequestration can make a valuable contribution to reducing the increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrations. We studied the effect of poultry manure, cattle slurry, sewage sludge, NH4NO3 or urea on C cycling and sequestration in silage grass production. Soil respiration, net ecosystem exchange (NEE) and methane (CH4) fluxes were measured with chambers, and soil samples were analysed for total C and dissolved organic C (DOC). Treatments were applied over 2 years and measurements were carried out over 3 years to assess possible residual effects. Organic fertilizer applications increased CO2 loss through soil respiration but also enhanced soil C storage compared with mineral fertilizer. Cumulative soil respiration rates were highest in poultry manure treatments with 13.7 t C ha?1 in 2003, corresponding to 1.6 times the control value, but no residual effect was seen. Soil respiration showed an exponential increase with temperature, and a bimodal relationship with soil moisture. The greatest NEE was observed on urea treatments (with a CO2 uptake of ?4.4 g CO2 m?2 h?1). Total C and DOC were significantly greater in manure treatments in the soil surface (0–10 cm). Of the C added in the manures, 27% of that in the sewage pellets, 32% of that in the cattle slurry and 39% of that in the poultry manure remained in the 0–10 cm soil layer at the end of the experiment. Mineral fertilizer treatments had only small C sequestration rates, although uncertainties were high. Expressed as global warming potentials, the benefits of increased C sequestration on poultry manure and sewage pellet treatments were outweighed by the additional losses of N2O, particularly in the wet year 2002. Methane was emitted only for 2–3 days on cattle slurry treatments, but the magnitudes of fluxes were negligible compared with C losses by soil respiration.  相似文献

This analysis uses long time-series of daily mean data from the three BERMS flux sites in central Saskatchewan to explore biases in ERA-40 at a close-by grid-point, and to study the relationships between surface variables and fluxes and cloud cover in the observed and model data sets. On the seasonal timescale the biases in ERA-40 of temperature and humidity are small, but the model has a high bias in evaporation, and except in mid-summer a low bias of reflective cloud, which gives a high bias in the surface downward net shortwave flux. In summer, on days with high observed cloud cover, the model has too little cloud, and a corresponding high sensible heat flux and a warm, dry bias; while on summer days when observed cloud is lower, the model biases are generally reversed. The internal relationships between near-surface relative humidity, linked to the mean lifting condensation level, cloud cover and the surface radiation fluxes are however very similar in model and data. Although cause and effect cannot be determined from these biases alone, given the complexity of the interactions, they suggest possible errors in both the land-surface model and the atmospheric cloud parameterizations.  相似文献

A large-scale field experiment was conducted over four seasons on a gleysol (24% clay in topsoil) in Scotland. Conventional ploughing, shallow ploughing and shallow rotary or tine cultivation were investigated for the incorporation of straw in winter barley. Straw after harvest was either chopped or removed. Thus the residue treatments were either straw plus stubble or stubble only. Incorporation depths ranged from 0–100 to 0–300 mm.The presence of straw changed soil physical conditions after several seasons in which straw was incorporated. In the ploughed treatments, the presence of straw plus stubble decreased the average soil water content and matric potential in the topsoil in comparison to stubble only, indicating more rapid drainage. This was associated with the presence of buried straw in zones of loose soil just above plough depth and with a long-term increase in soil pore continuity related to the presence of straw residues. The presence of straw plus stubble under conventional ploughing decreased thermal diffusivities in the top 150 mm of soil in comparison with stubble only. Shallow incorporation of straw plus stubble gave higher overall strengths, bulk densities, lower water infiltration rates and poorer drainage in the topsoil than deeper incorporation. However, shallow incorporation caused an accumulation of organic matter over the first three seasons. This accumulation probably contributed to the increased aggregate stability and resistance to compaction of the top 50-mm soil layer, indicating improved resistance to erosion and to further compaction.  相似文献

Plain-tailed wrens (Pheugopedius euophrys) cooperate to produce a duet song in which males and females rapidly alternate singing syllables. We examined how sensory information from each wren is used to coordinate singing between individuals for the production of this cooperative behavior. Previous findings in nonduetting songbird species suggest that premotor circuits should encode each bird's own contribution to the duet. In contrast, we find that both male and female wrens encode the combined cooperative output of the pair of birds. Further, behavior and neurophysiology show that both sexes coordinate the timing of their singing based on feedback from the partner and suggest that females may lead the duet.  相似文献

Current AA recommendations for sows are to provide a fixed amount of AA intake throughout gestation based on the assumption that there is a constant demand for AA; however, the demand for nutrients changes from maternal lean tissue in early gestation to fetal and mammary growth in late gestation. The objective of this study was to determine the Thr requirement in early (d 35 to 53 and 25 to 55 for Exp. 1 and 2, respectively) and late (d 92 to 110 and 81 to 111 for Exp. 1 and 2, respectively) gestation using the indicator AA oxidation (IAAO) method with l-[1-(13)C]Phe as the tracer AA. A total of 14 multiparous sows were used: 6 in Exp. 1 and 8 in Exp. 2. Each sow received each of 6 diets in random order in both early and late gestation. A basal diet was formulated to contain Thr at 60% of the 1998 NRC recommendation in Exp. 1 and 20 and 60% of the 1998 NRC in Exp. 2 for early and late gestation, respectively. Crystalline l-Thr was added to create additional diets with approximately 10% incremental increases in Thr. Sows were placed in respiration chambers, and expired air and blood were collected every 30 min for 5.5 h. Tracer Phe [mg/(kg of BW·h)] was given orally over the last 4 h divided into eight 0.5-h meals. Expired air and plasma were measured for (13)CO(2) enrichment and free Thr concentration, respectively. Background (13)CO(2) was subtracted from plateau (13)CO(2) enrichment. Data were analyzed using a 2-phase nonlinear Mixed model. The overall litter size and litter weight were 13.5 ± 3.1 and 20.5 ± 3.9 kg, respectively. Based on IAAO, the Thr requirement in early gestation was 6.1 g/d (R(2) = 0.59, Exp. 1) and 5.0 g/d (R(2) = 0.71, Exp. 2). In late gestation, the Thr requirement based on IAAO was 13.6 g/d (R(2) = 0.60, Exp. 1) and 12.3 g/d (R(2) = 0.58, Exp. 2). Based on plasma Thr, the Thr requirement in early gestation was 7.0 g/d (R(2) = 0.90, Exp. 1) and 3.9 g/d (R(2) = 0.90, Exp. 2). In late gestation, the Thr requirement based on plasma Thr was 10.5 g/d (R(2) = 0.67, Exp. 2). There was a linear response to increasing Thr intake in late gestation in Exp. 1. Feeding a single amount of AA throughout gestation results in overfeeding AA in early gestation and underfeeding AA in late gestation. The 2-fold increase in Thr requirement in the last third of gestation suggests that phase feeding sows in gestation will more closely meet the demands for nutrients and that the requirement for essential AA in gestating sows should be re-evaluated in early and late gestation separately.  相似文献

Plant chemical composition and the soil community are known to influence litter and soil organic matter decomposition. Although these two factors are likely to interact, their mechanisms and outcomes of interaction are not well understood. Studies of their interactive effects are rare and usually focus on carbon dynamics of litter, while nutrient dynamics in the underlying soil have been ignored. A potential mechanism of interaction stems from the role fauna plays in regulating availability of litter-derived materials in the mineral soil. We investigated the role of soil fauna (meso, macro) in determining the effect of surface-litter chemical composition on nitrogen mineralization and on the micro-food web in mineral soils. In a field setting we exposed mineral soil to six types of surface-applied litter spanning wide ranges of multiple quality parameters and restricted the access of larger soil animals to the soils underlying these litters. Over six months we assessed litter mass and nitrogen loss, nitrogen mineralization rates in the mineral soils, and soil microbes and microfauna. We found evidence that the structure of the soil community can alter the effect of surface-litter chemical composition on nitrogen dynamics in the mineral soil. In particular, we found that the presence of members of the meso- and macrofauna can magnify the control of nitrogen mineralization by litter quality and that this effect is time dependent. While fauna were able to affect the size of the micro-food web they did not impact the effect of litter composition on the abundance of the members of the micro-food web. By enhancing the strength of the impact of litter quality on nitrogen dynamics, the larger fauna can alter nitrogen availability and its temporal dynamics which, in turn, can have important implications for ecosystem productivity. These findings contribute to evidence demonstrating that soil fauna shape plant litter effects on ecosystem function.  相似文献

The IgG2 anti-Brucella antibody response of cattle to Brucella vaccination and infection was measured. Three groups of animals were studied; Group 1 contained 11 non-vaccinated cows, Group 2, 17 cows vaccinated with a low dose of Strain 19 vaccine and Group 3, 17 cows vaccinated with a high dose of Strain 19 vaccine. All animals were challenged at Week 33 with an infectious isolate of B. abortus (Strain 2308). Studies of the IgG2 antibodies response indicated an absolute correlation between anti-Brucella IgG2 levels and infection of the animal. All animals showing reciprocal titers of greater than or equal to 3000 (16 of 45 tested) were found to be positive for the challenge organism at slaughter. Animals with reciprocal IgG2 titers less than or equal to 1000 (29 of 45 tested) were found to be negative for the challenge organism at the time of slaughter. The predictive value of IgG2 antibody levels for infection held for animals in all three groups and consequently this suggests that monitoring of specific IgG2 anti-Brucella antibody levels may be of value in detection of Brucella-infected cattle.  相似文献

Twelve strains of M. bovigenitalium and two of three strains of M. canadense caused an infection resulting in a pathogenic effect when experimentally inoculated into the ovine mammary gland. Differences in the pathogenesis were quantified by the duration of continuous mycoplasma excretion and the duration of high milk cell levels, but variation in the susceptability of the experimental animals prevented the establishment of firm conclusions on the relative virulence of the strains. Seven M. bovigenitalium and two M. canadense strains were eventually eliminated naturally from the infected glands, but four M. bovigenitalium strain infections ultimately became sub-clinical with intermittent mycoplasma excretion and low milk cell levels.  相似文献

Soil pore networks have a complex geometry, which is challenging to model in three dimensions. We use a Boolean model of pore space that has proved useful in modelling gas diffusion in dry structures to investigate the distribution of water in this pore space and to quantify the effects on pore connectivity to the soil surface. We first show how total porosity in dry soil influences connectivity via the percolation threshold. Then we show that our model simulation of the ‘ink-bottle effect’ can account for much of the hysteresis of the soil water. The differences in distribution of water between wetting and drying result in maintaining greater connectivity of the air-filled pore space during drying than during wetting. Hysteresis is large at small total porosities and slowly declines as porosity increases. During wetting much pore space is blocked when more than 40% of the pore space is filled with water, although during drying all non-isolated air-filled pores are connected to the surface. Even when soil is allowed to wet to near saturation, there are rapid increases in pore connectivity during drying, which may explain, for example, rapid increases in production and emission of nitrous oxide in soils near saturation.  相似文献
