South Africa holds the greatest diversity of Encephalartos species globally. In recent years several reports have been received of Encephalartos species in the country dying of unknown causes. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of, and identify the causal agents of, diseases of Encephalartos species in the Gauteng and Limpopo Provinces of South Africa. Plant material with symptoms and insects were collected from diseased plants in private gardens, commercial nurseries and conservation areas in these regions. Insects collected were identified based on morphology, and microbial isolates based on morphology and DNA sequence data. Insect species identified infesting cultivated cycads included the beetle Amorphocerus talpa, and the scale insects Aonidiella aurantii, Aspidiotus capensis, Chrysomphalus aonidum, Lindingaspis rossi, Pseudaulacaspis cockerelli, Pseudaulacaspis pentagona and Pseudococcus longispinus. Fungal species isolated from diseased plants included species of Diaporthe, Epicoccum, Fusarium, Lasiodiplodia, Neofusicoccum, Peyronellaea, Phoma, Pseudocercospora and Toxicocladosporium. The plant pathogen Phytophthora cinnamomi was identified from E. transvenosus plants in the Modjadji Nature Reserve. Artificial inoculation studies fulfilled Koch's postulates, strongly suggesting that P. cinnamomi is responsible for the deaths of these plants under field conditions. 相似文献
Haemophilus parasuis infection in pigs is characterized by fibrinous polyserositis, arthritis and meningitis. Despite the fact that traditional diagnosis is based on herd history, clinical signs, bacterial isolation and serotyping, molecular-based methods are alternatives for species-specific tests and epidemiological studies. The aim of this study was to characterize H. parasuis field strains from different states of Brazil, employing serotyping and genotyping methods. Serotyping revealed that serovar 4 was the most prevalent (26.1%), followed by serovars 5 (17.4%), 14 (8.7%), 13 (4.4%) and 2 (4.4%), whereas 39% of the strains were considered as untypeable. AFLP with a single enzyme and PFGE were able to type all isolates tested, generating 34 and 20 different profiles, respectively, including untypeable strains. Besides the slightly higher discrimination index presented by AFLP, PFGE with Not I restriction enzyme showed a better correlation with epidemiological data, grouping strains of the same serovar, animal or farm origin. The results indicated AFLP and PFGE as valuable tools for typing H. parasuis isolates collected in Brazil. 相似文献
After euthanasia, ovaries were removed from 5 horses and shipped to a laboratory where 46 oocytes were collected. The oocytes were cultured for 24 to 30 hours, and 36 oocytes were transferred to 10 recipient mares via flank laparotomies. Recipient mares were inseminated with semen from various stallions. Sixteen days after transfer, 4 of the recipients were pregnant with at least 1 embryonic vesicle. Embryonic death occurred in 3 recipients, whereas a healthy live foal was born from 1 recipient. Ovaries from valuable mares can be a source of viable oocytes after death of the mare. For shipping to a laboratory, fluctuations in temperature should be minimized and the ovaries should not be chilled. 相似文献
Gibberella circinata [anamorph Fusarium circinatum (= F. subglutinans f.sp. pini )] causes pitch canker and is an important pathogen in South African pine nurseries. The initial outbreak of the pitch canker fungus was limited to a single nursery at Ngodwana in Mpumalanga Province. Subsequently, several other pine nurseries in South Africa became infected. Most of these outbreaks were relatively small except for the outbreak in the Klipkraal nursery (Mpumalanga Province). The genetic diversity, population differentiation and relative frequencies of the sexual and asexual cycles among two South African subpopulations were determined to establish whether immigration, mutation and/or recombination contributed towards population structure. The allelic diversity of the initial population (Ngodwana) was observed to be lower (0·16) than that of the more recent Klipkraal population (0·25). Approximately 4% ( G ST = 0·04) of total gene diversity could be attributed to differences among the subpopulations. Furthermore, six new vegetative compatibility groups (VCGs) have been identified since the initial outbreak of G. circinata in South Africa 10 years ago. The relatively low allelic diversity and low level of genetic differentiation suggest restricted gene flow among subpopulations, and indicate that the pathogen has been introduced recently. However, the amount of allelic and VCG diversity suggests that multiple genotypes have been introduced into South Africa. The increases in effective population number, allelic diversity and new VCGs over the past 10 years suggest that sexual reproduction might be occurring. 相似文献
Eight species of the Botryosphaeriaceae (canker and dieback pathogens) were identified on native Syzygium cordatum in South Africa, based on anamorph morphology, ITS rDNA sequence data and PCR-RFLP analysis. The species identified were Neofusicoccum parvum, N. ribis, N. luteum, N. australe, N. mangiferae , Botryosphaeria dothidea, Lasiodiplodia gonubiensis and L. theobromae . Their pathogenicity on S. cordatum seedlings and a Eucalyptus grandis × camaldulensis clone was determined in glasshouse inoculation trials. Isolates of all identified species, except one of N. mangiferae , were more pathogenic on the Eucalyptus clone than on S. cordatum . Some of the species that cross-infected these hosts, such as N. ribis, N. parvum and L. theobromae , were amongst the most pathogenic on the Eucalyptus clone, while B. dothidea and L. gonubiensis were the least pathogenic. Results of this study illustrate that species of the Botryosphaeriaceae from native hosts could pose a threat to introduced Eucalyptus spp., and vice versa . 相似文献
The woodwasp, Sirex noctilio , and its symbiotic fungus, Amylostereum areolatum , cause extensive damage to pine plantations in the Southern Hemisphere. S. noctilio was first reported from South Africa in 1994. In this study, the population diversity of A. areolatum isolates from South Africa, South America, Australasia and Europe was determined by vegetative incompatibility testing. All 108 South African and 26 South American isolates belonged to the same vegetative compatibility group (VCG). This VCG showed a weak incompatibility reaction with the single Tasmanian and single New Zealand isolates tested. This VCG differed from VCGs from Europe. It also differed from isolates associated with the biocontrol nematode, Deladenus siricidicola , which is produced in Australia. It is concluded that the South African and South American populations of A. areolatum share a common origin . 相似文献
Information about genetic parameters is essential for selection decisions and genetic evaluation. These estimates are population specific; however, there are few studies with dairy cattle populations reared under tropical and sub‐tropical conditions. Thus, the aim was to obtain estimates of heritability and genetic correlations for milk yield and quality traits using pedigree and genomic information from a Holstein population maintained in a tropical environment. Phenotypic records (n = 36 457) of 4203 cows as well as the genotypes for 57 368 single nucleotide polymorphisms from 755 of these cows were used. Covariance components were estimated using the restricted maximum likelihood method under a mixed animal model, considering a pedigree‐based relationship matrix or a combined pedigree‐genomic matrix. High heritabilities (around 0.30) were estimated for lactose and protein content in milk whereas moderate values (between 0.19 and 0.26) were obtained for percentages of fat, saturated fatty acids and palmitic acid in milk. Genetic correlations ranging from −0.38 to −0.13 were determined between milk yield and composition traits. The smaller estimates compared to other similar studies can be due to poor environmental conditions, which may reduce genetic variability. These results highlight the importance in using genetic parameters estimated in the population under evaluation for selection decisions. 相似文献
As plants, algae and some sessile invertebrates may grow in nearly monospecific assemblies, their collective biomass increases and if they compete hard enough some die, freeing up space. The concurrent increase in biomass and decrease in density is called self-thinning, and its trajectory over time or maximum values represent a boundary condition. For a single stand developing over time the boundary defines the carrying capacity of the environment but the most extreme trajectories emulate the efficiency of species in packing biomass into space.
Results
Here we present a meta-analysis of compiled data on biomass and density from 56 studies of 42 species of seaweeds from 8 orders within 3 phyla scattered through the world’s oceans. Our analysis shows that, with respect to biomass, seaweeds are the most efficient space occupiers on Earth because they transgress previously fixed limits derived from land plants. This is probably because seaweeds are not limited by water and do not need structures for its transport or for transpiration; they photosynthesise and uptake nutrients over their entire surface; they are attached to the substrate by holdfasts that are small proportional to their volume or weight compared to roots; water provides them better support, reducing the need for tissues for rigidity. We also identified a biomass concentration common to plants and seaweeds which represents the threshold that no life on the planet can pass. Using each stand’s distance to the biomass–density boundary, we determined that within the seaweeds the efficiency of space occupation differed amongst taxonomic and functional groups as well as with clonality and latitude.
Conclusions
Algae occupy space more efficiently than plants, most likely because the watery environment facilitates the physical processes and integration of space occupation. The distance-to-the-boundary proves a good metric to discriminate among groups and may be useful for comparison of the most efficient biomass producing systems, or for the identification of systems impacted by pollution.
