Novel insights into transmission routes of Mycobacterium avium in pigs and possible implications for human health

Mycobacterium avium infection is a severe condition in humans, whereas pigs are often subclinically infected. Pig carcasses represent a possible source of human infection. Faecal excretion of M. avium was recently demonstrated in experimentally infected pigs, along with detection of M. avium in apparently normal lymph nodes. The present study investigates faecal excretion in naturally infected herds and the presence of live mycobacteria in lymph nodes. Two pig herds (A and B), with a history of sporadically suspected M. avium infection were sampled. Herd B used peat, as opposed to Herd A. Samples from peat, sawdust, drinking water, faeces and lymph nodes were collected. Identification of mycobacteria was performed by 16S rDNA sequencing and PCR. Mycobacterium avium isolates were analysed by Multi-Locus Variable Number of Tandem repeat Analysis (MLVA). Mycobacterium avium subsp. hominissuis was detected in samples of faeces, peat and lymph nodes from Herd B, often with identical MLVA profiles. Additionally, other non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) were found in the same material. The absence of macroscopic lymph node lesions in the presence of M. avium subsp. hominissuis was frequently demonstrated. In Herd A, only one NTM isolate, which proved not to be M. avium, was found. Faeces might facilitate transmission of M. avium subsp. hominissuis between pigs and maintain the infection pressure in herds. The low incidence of macroscopic lesions together with the massive presence of M. avium subsp. hominissuis in lymph nodes from pigs kept on peat raises questions related to animal husbandry, food safety and human health.     

Amphibole: first occurrence in a meteorite

This is the first report of an amphibole mineral found in any meteorite. The amphibole richterite (soda tremolite), Na(2)Ca(Mg, Fe)(5)Si(8)O(22)(OH, F)(2), occurs as a primary (preterrestrial) mineral enclosed within graphite nodules in the iron meteorite from Wichita County, Texas.     

Continental-scale partitioning of fire emissions during the 1997 to 2001 El Niño/La Niña period

During the 1997 to 1998 El Ni?o, drought conditions triggered widespread increases in fire activity, releasing CH4 and CO2 to the atmosphere. We evaluated the contribution of fires from different continents to variability in these greenhouse gases from 1997 to 2001, using satellite-based estimates of fire activity, biogeochemical modeling, and an inverse analysis of atmospheric CO anomalies. During the 1997 to 1998 El Ni?o, the fire emissions anomaly was 2.1 +/- 0.8 petagrams of carbon, or 66 +/- 24% of the CO2 growth rate anomaly. The main contributors were Southeast Asia (60%), Central and South America (30%), and boreal regions of Eurasia and North America (10%).     

Transmission of equine influenza virus to dogs

Molecular and antigenic analyses of three influenza viruses isolated from outbreaks of severe respiratory disease in racing greyhounds revealed that they are closely related to H3N8 equine influenza virus. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the canine influenza virus genomes form a monophyletic group, consistent with a single interspecies virus transfer. Molecular changes in the hemagglutinin suggested adaptive evolution in the new host. The etiologic role of this virus in respiratory disease was supported by the temporal association of rising antibody titers with disease and by experimental inoculation studies. The geographic expansion of the infection and its persistence for several years indicate efficient transmission of canine influenza virus among greyhounds. Evidence of infection in pet dogs suggests that this infection may also become enzootic in this population.     

"Blow" of the pilot whale

A captive pilot whale emptied as much as 88 percent of lung gas passively, without the aid of expiratory muscles. Level or decreasing pressures in the esophagus during expiration, and in the blowhole at the onset of expiration, revealed the driving force of expiration to be solely elastic recoil. Active muscular reexpansion of the lungs ensued immediately. Expiration and inspiration were completed in about I second.     

A 10,000-year record of Arctic Ocean sea-ice variability--view from the beach

We present a sea-ice record from northern Greenland covering the past 10,000 years. Multiyear sea ice reached a minimum between ~8500 and 6000 years ago, when the limit of year-round sea ice at the coast of Greenland was located ~1000 kilometers to the north of its present position. The subsequent increase in multiyear sea ice culminated during the past 2500 years and is linked to an increase in ice export from the western Arctic and higher variability of ice-drift routes. When the ice was at its minimum in northern Greenland, it greatly increased at Ellesmere Island to the west. The lack of uniformity in past sea-ice changes, which is probably related to large-scale atmospheric anomalies such as the Arctic Oscillation, is not well reproduced in models. This needs to be further explored, as it is likely to have an impact on predictions of future sea-ice distribution.     

Effects of pre-rigour filleting on quality aspects of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.)

Aquaculture is promising in increasing the amount of fresh Atlantic cod available all year around. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of pre‐rigour filleting on fillet quality of wild and farmed cod. Pre‐rigour filleting resulted in significantly less fillet gaping than in fillets produced post rigour. The pre‐rigour fillets were, however, 12–13% shorter post rigour. In spite of the significantly lower water content of the muscle 6 days post mortem, a significantly higher liquid loss was seen in the pre‐rigour group. Differences in gaping score and muscle pH were dependent on whether the fish were wild or fed. Fillet gaping increased with storage time and was particularly pronounced for well‐fed cod. Fed cod had a significantly higher hydroxyproline (Hyp) content and significantly lower amount of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) than wild cod. The ratio between GAGs and Hyp was thus significantly lower in fed cod. A connection between connective tissue components and fillet gaping may exist. However, further investigations are required.     

Pre-rigor filleting and drip loss from fillets of farmed Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.)

Improved slaughtering procedures of farmed fish may provide sufficient time so that filleting can be performed pre‐rigor while the muscle pH is still high. Such filleting not only reduces fillet gaping but also lowers the transportation costs and makes fresh fillets available to the markets at an earlier stage. The aim of our work was to determine the weight reduction of the fillets due to liquid loss and to study the proteins and enzymes in the drip. After 11 days of cold storage, fillets of farmed Atlantic cod produced pre‐rigor had a weight loss of 10% and a fillet contraction of 19% while for fillets produced post‐rigor the values were 5% and 4% respectively. At the same time, approximately twice the amount of proteins had been lost from the pre‐rigor‐produced fillets. Sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis showed that the proteins in the drip were similar to the sarcoplasmatic proteins extracted from the muscle. Specific analysis of proteolytic enzymes indicated that they are less stable in the expelled liquid than in the flesh during storage. The extensive loss of weight and proteins from pre‐rigor‐produced fillets during subsequent storage must be taken into account if such processing is considered for farmed cod.
